Worse drivers: Males or females?
Which group causes more accidents, drives drunk more often and is responsible for more traffic deaths? Take a look at government and auto insurance statistics.
Old stereotypes peg women as dangerous drivers, but statistics show the reality: When it comes to driving, guys are much naughtier. And insurance rates reflect that.
We can't say that all males are reckless when they drive. Nor can we say that all females are safe drivers. But numerous studies show that males are more likely than females to throw caution to the wind when on the road.
"Maybe the testosterone makes them more aggressive," jokes Loretta Worters, a spokeswoman for the Insurance Information Institute. "But the fact is, the industry doesn't go by whether you have higher testosterone. It goes by numbers, and the numbers seem to support that men are generally more reckless than women."
Sorry, boys, but statistics show that you break traffic laws more often than females.
Quality Planning, a company that validates policyholder information for auto insurers, conducted a study that concluded males are at least 50% more likely to be cited for reckless driving, seat belt violations, speeding, failure to yield and stop sign/signal violations. To be more specific, the company analyzed an entire year of policyholder information in 2007 and found that males were cited for reckless driving 3.41 times as often as females.
|Violations||Violation ratio, males vs. females|
|Seat belt violations||3.08-to-1|
|Failure to yield||1.54-to-1|
|Stop sign/signal violations||1.53-to-1|
"We were not surprised to see that men have slightly more -- about plus 5% -- violations that result in accidents than women," says Raj Bhat, the president of Quality Planning. "And because men are also more likely to violate laws for speeding, passing and yielding, the resulting accidents caused by men lead to more-expensive (insurance) claims than those caused by women."
The study also found that female drivers were about 27% less likely to be found at fault when involved in an accident.
Cruising and boozing
Males also drive drunk more often than females. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, males outnumbered females 4-to-1 when it came to driving under the influence. This is based on a study of DUIs from 1998 to 2007. However, the same study found that while more males have been busted for driving impaired, DUI arrests for males had decreased by nearly 20% during the study period, while they had increased by more than 14% among females.
|Females' DUIs up 14.3%|
|Year||DUIs||Drivers||% with DUIs|
|Males' DUIs down 19.7%|
|Year||DUIs||Drivers||% with DUIs|
Quality Planning's study found that males are 3.09 times as likely to drive under the influence of alcohol as females.

Us males aren't dumb, its just that we don't care & are not the obey type like females are.
The studies are very inaccurate because most cops are males & a male is far more likely to take it easy on a female traffic violator than a male. Also probably more men driving.
It should be illegal for insurance companies to discriminate based on false studies!
Fellas, you may want to consider one other method some of us flirty gals have used to avoid getting a ticket - not getting pulled over in the first **** place. Been driving 50 or more miles a day for 26 years, and I've never been pulled over. I find actually obeying the traffic laws works pretty well. Food for thought...
Finally, a woman comes on here and throws down the "egotistical male" card. Was only a matter of time and completely expected.
I drive when my wife is in the car because she completely expects it much like opening a door for a woman or offering your arm when walking next to a woman. Doesn't have a thing to do with male ego. God, woman like throwing that around.
I actually drive more than my wife, have less tickets but, yes, my insurance rates are higher.
these statistics are bogus. What they don't tell you are how many women get away with breaking the law due to looks, having kids in the car, and more emotional excuses. The last is speeding....
speeding is getting a ticket and paying a fine based on what MIGHT happen. SPEED never hurt anyone or caused any accident....RECKLESS driving where speed may be a factor, has hurt/killed many people.
I used to drive through the Atlanta area a good bit. On any given day, I have seen at least 5 or more cops sitting on the side of the road and have seen at least one wreck per day on the commute that i used to make a couple times a week....
I have driven in Germany on the autobahn and in a 2 week span, I saw one accident that both drivers drove away from and 2 cops the WHOLE 2 WEEKS....contrary to what you may hear about the autobahn in the USA, it is much safer to drive on than i20, i75, i85, or 285 by a LONG SHOT....people actually know how to drive there and it shows. No passing on the right, no cutting people off to get on 285 north from i20 as that happens 100s if not 1000s of times a day. There, people actually pass then GET THE HELL OVER IN THE RIGHT LANE WHEN DONE PASSING....unlike here where people camp out in the left lane and impede traffic even though it is illegal to do so by law....I do not see the cops/troopers enforcing that law if ever....I could go on but, one thing is true....
These statistics are so biased, they mean virtually nothing other than a way to leverage money from people just as speeding tickets do...hence the super speeder law that is actually double jeopardy as you get 2 tickets for the same offense....
For you troopers out there on 20 and all....how about enforcing all the laws equally....quit telling people what might happen if you are speeding....'a deer could jump out in front of you' or 'you could have a flat tire' many things can happen but, if you actually had to earn a license, most of these accidents could be avoided by drivers that actually have to know how to drive as it is a skill and not a right. I am going to start taping some of you and exposing you all for what many of you are....hypocrites. How about turing on your lights when it is raining...stop sitting on the side of the road worrying about speed...its a money scam....you fine us for what MIGHT happen....quit using chargers are drag cars as I have caught one of you doing on i20...I even called in one of you for going 80 in a 65...was not even in the right county and had no jurisdiction. See many of you running stop signs....even caught one of you using your lights to get to McDonalds faster to get through the drive thru....COME ON!!!!!
Take a look at WHO's statistic this info is based on. The auto insurance industry. If THEY show that males are worse drivers, then THEY can charge higher rates to the group that drives more frequently or who primarily holds the policy on the vehicles (the male). Not sure but I would bet that there are more men driving on a regular basis and logging far more hours on the road than women. There would likely be different stats if they compared the ratio of tickets vs drivers, ie. the percentage of female drivers that aquire tickes vs ALL female drivers and vice versa.
