Become a medical assistant and put and RN and LPN out of work.  Because they are cheaper.

Don't assume the unemployed need to study at a vocational college.  I am unemployed and have spent 6 years in college. 4 at Purdue.  I think I spent enough time educating myself.  As soon as NASA gets cut off there will be rocket scientist looking for work.

To: Urlemmings: Try going to Central & South America. Were a teacher (graduated with honors) would earn less than $15,000.00 while the government steals all the monies and vaccinations the United Nations send them and the U.S.A. Do you know that we send $230,000,000.00 each year to BRAZIL from the U.S.A.? Do you know that Peru receives $87,000,000.00 each year by the U.S.A.? Averigua! Deja de criticar tanto acá (U.S.A.) mudate a Mianmar, China, Cuba, Venezuela o cualquier otra parte y veras. By the way when have you seen a Latin-American President retired from his service POOR? The answer NEVER!

We are going back from the 1970's, 80,s and 90's were Welfare was the new It! Now it's coming back. The government should and must encouge the unemloyeed to at least study at a Vocational School or a Business School. Because I remember when many, many minorities would have the excused to apply for Welfare Benefits and that IT!

And to  make matters worse. Both the Democrats and Republicans voted to cut unemployment benefits down to 63 weeks instead of 99.  Te Democrats who are supposed to to be for the little guy did nothing to stop this. The only thing these 2 parties can agree on is to cut the people who are down on their luck or the elderly, by threatening to raise the social security eligibility age to 70.  Both parties suck and we certainly need a new one.

I retired at 55 and I began giving piano lessons.  I'm so glad my mother forced me to take piano lessons.

Who wrote this? What a dumb article. They forgot Walmart Greeter. It's amazing to me how this country, despite what your knowledge and experience may be, somehow says once your in the 50's, you're done.

The 55 year-old man should have been prepared for retirement by the time he/she turned 45..Now it's too late to complain about haveing to work after 55 and having to change careers..You chose to be self-employed for the last 8 years, it did not choose you!! millions of 55 /over are working for less than they made 5-years ago, but that's what they need to do to survive and they do it!!!

urlemmings: I am so stunned by the abject stupidity of your comment that it's difficult to gather my thoughts for a response to it. I have known life in countries controlled by martial law and run by communists. If you think that the greatest defender of liberty and the most successful civilization in the history of the world is a 'horrible country', I invite you to try one of those on for size.  BTW, ours is not a democracy but rather a constitutional republic. You would do well to learn the difference.

Are you kidding me I'm sure that people want to tour Dayton Ohio I think not. I was a caregiver for 15 years and put in a lot of long hours with little pay the jobs that you talk about  are other way out there or two steps away from working min wage jobs. Some of us have worked our butts off and are no longer able to wait on tables or stand for 8 hours a day, We have broke are backs but still can work rings around some young people that say this is to hard and still only get a n dime more than them. Don't get me started on all the jobs going overseas. There has to be something in the middle.

I have lost two jobs this year  there is no security  in the work force any more.

I approach 55 and am self-employed, have been for the last 8 years. It was very disconcerting to leave the perceived security of a corporate paycheck but as it turns out making your own decisions results in more security not less. I have been offered several positions with both former employers and their competitors, my answer is the same - I have a rate sheet and will be glad to submit a bid on the work but have no interest in an employee relationship at this time.

I am truly blessed in that what I do pays well and I enjoy it.

Only because of corporate GREED is why a man of 50 years of age has to change careers instead of preparing for retirement!

99% American People, VOTE STRAIGHT DEMOCRATIC, the life you save may be your OWN!!
And, if this Democratic Party doesn't work for us, we'll install a TRUE DEMOCRATIC PARTY that WILL work for us!

this article is a joke. I need a decent paying job now. After 29 years my company no longer has a position for me. I am now applying for positions at half my former wage. if I'm lucky enough to get one, I can be homeless in 6 months. Thats something to look forward to. Oh wait! I can get 2 full time jobs and break even so long as i don't have to pay for health care! I've actually been told I wouldn't be hired because I had such a good job all my life that i would leave the first time another one came along. so what do I do? Tell me.....

Wish I could have a one to one with michaelbanks....my husband is a dedicated public servant with a small city in the south.  If you think for a moment that we live the life, think again.   6% of his salary goes to his retirement fund via the state...he gets 4% matching from his 'city' employer.   When we can afford to retire, he will get about 33% of his current salary per month.   We have lived with 4 years; soon to be 5 years, of furlough time, no raises, and the only 'benefit' increase was the vacation time increases while taking on more of the cost of medical insurance.     Do we throw stones at all those private sector people who think 'we live the life' but expect their garbage picked up, the streets in perfect condition, the storm water to run off their property and be fixed by the 'city', to call the neighbor and tell him to stop it or fix it, and most of all do it all on less taxes not more.  Guess we all need to blame someone ...

@Someone:  Get over it.  Stop playing the race card.  You probably aren't being hired because you come across just like you do in your post: as a bitter, bigoted **** with an entitlement complex.

It must be sweet to have a government job, I meet people all the time that are retired at 40,s and 50s all of which are ex government hacks who work 20 years and retire with more then twice the pay/benifits of people in the dreaded private sector who must live off an average of 1/3 what the government retiree gets, and those in the dreaded private sector must work twice the number of years .enjoy life for thats all you get my reward is the next life

I feel you pain, if your a white male over 50 forget it, nobody wants to pay for your experience even though most people over 50 can do the work of 4 gen x/y. but the corporations dont want you if your over 50 unless your female/gay'/transgendered/or some other minority, ive been unemployed over 3 years now(my UE ran out a year ago) we live off CC and my wifes part time job soon we will stop paying our bills unless that black moron gets voted out in nov.in obamas government both me and my wife dont count as unemployed and theres millions just like us out there, in the 3 years IVe been out of work I literally sent out thousands of resumes I can count on 1 hand the number of replies I got. Despite having two bachelors degrees, dont believe what the obama media tells you there are no jobs out there unless your part of the special breed of citizen, like being gay or a woman
