This article must be a satire- right?. I worked in many of these frigid places and couldn't wait to retire in sunny Florida. I am very comfortable on an average ( $2,000 mo.) pension with nearby medical facilities and fishing and golf galore. Tarpon Springs, Fl. offers all of this and a vibrant art community to boot.

Money that maters when you retire your SS it's not much but an old RV is all you need that's it !

unload everything else and hit the road and have a look around just take your time and be happy

to be alive each day that's the American dream and as good as it gets. Or just stay home with your TV and shut-up.

Be Captain of your Ship or RV and try all the U.S. States and Canada. We did all four corners for six years and now call Arizona home no bugs, snow and it's dry heat that keeps you happy. YB:1931.

I am in my mid 60's and I don't want to live the rest of my days down south or where its cold...San Francisco is nice but way too expensive...gues I am stuck in Los Angeles.

Boston area is way to expensivw for real estate or apts unless you get subsidized elderly housing and they have waiting lists for up to 3 years. All the rest you mentioned about Boston is true. Diane

Some of these places are beyond affordability for most retirees.  Putting Toledo on the list is a joke: it's affordable, but the city is literally falling apart.  Its dependence on the auto industry has doomed it.  The place is polluted by oil refineries, has piss-poor transportation, and a growing rate of both violent and property crimes.  Finding a movie that's not showing everywhere else is impossible.  Bookstores are rare, and the bigger ones sell calendars and knick-knacks as well as the best sellers, but not much else.

The Library system and Toledo Museum of Art are excellent, though.

Way too cold and I am from Canada!  I don't want to move to Florida but there has to be better places to retire where it is a little warmer.

I retired to south west Florida near Tampa but not to close. The climate is mild the population density is low at least in the summer. High quality health care is ready available. Lots of cultural events near by. The best part is about this area is we are near enough to travel to the resorts easily but far enough away not to have all the mess that entails.

Foo 2u nailed it.  I fully agree.  But how can we find those places that meet that criteria?  I'm currently retired in NYC and I can get around a little better but it's really too expensive overall.

It is obvious that whoever writes these nonsense articles lives in New York or some oversized, overpriced megalopolis and can't envision life anywhere else.  If you are serious about a place to live and grow old in, look for a place where ALL essential services are within reasonable walking distance for a 75-80 year old in reasonably good health.  I mean a place where you can walk to your doctor, dentist, grocery, pharmacy and anything else you might routinely need.  I seriously doubt you are going to find that in any of the named places.  If you can't find a place where you can reasonably access what you need you may as well consign yourself and all your money to some absurdly overpriced elder care facility where life as a zoo animal would be a distinct improvement .
