I live in the south and you cannot beat GA, Fl, and SC for retirement or for quality of life.

Why isn't TN on the list. No Sate Income Tax . Sales tax is high, but costs are low.

seems lowest cost would be where you don't need to heat or cool. the savings would overcome any tax difference. yea ohio sux on this factor, the only state where you use your furnace and a/c in a 24 hour period.

Not sure how Louisiana made the top ten.  State income tax, very high sales tax, high property taxes and in places like New Orleans, the public schools are so bad everyone sends their kids to private school. Don't retire in La.

Wouldn't New Hampshire be near the top if not at the top of this list as they have no sales tax and no income tax?  New Hampshire is not on this list.  Why not?  Another point is that business study each other to find a good plan for themselves.  So what I would like to know is,  why aren't all the other state administrators flocking to New Hampshire to find out how they get along just fine without income and sales tax?

The best "state" to retire in is one where you are healthy and you don't have any debt and you have ample savings.

 

The rest of this article is just hog wash. You are going to pay through the nose Fed taxes to more than make up 2 or 3 percent in state taxation.

 

Defeat the goverment spenders by saving your money and paying down your debt. You have control over that at least.

what difference does it make? isn't 1/2 the country on the Obama retirement plan already? everything on these comments is exactly

One more thing, when we had to pay $ 200.00 (plus costs) to retrieve our  5 lb minpinscher from yhe pound after she escoaped from a fenced yard., we did so.  We have moved to North Charleston where the fine is $ 1,000.00 for a dog that escapes form the yard, so we cannot afford to let the dog go outrside..  This is roberry at worst, at best taxation.

Idaho is a tax and spend state in spite of being one of the most RED states in the union.  So the label Republicans hang on the Democrats is nothing more than "Smoke and Mirrors!"

I forgot to mention there is a fine for whistling on the street.  In North Charleston,  of your dog escatpes your yard, the fine for a dog off your property without a lease is $ 1,00.00. On Sullivan's Island, it is ONLY $ 200.00.  These are hidden taxes.

What a joke.  My wife is a realtor.  We owned a home on Sullivan's Island, SC and put a for sale sign on it.  We received a letter from the Town of Sullivan's Island demanding that we buy a business license for marketing our own home.  SCV taxes you evey time you pee.

Alaska has no sales tax , no income tax, and oil dividend that pays you, sounds great. Also gas at over $4 a gallon, electricity at 25 cents a kwh, heating oil $4 plus per gallon and natural gas at 5 times the national average. High rents, food, medical, etc. I was born there, educated there, worked and retired there. Moved to where I pay sales tax, income tax etc. still about 25% lower cost of living and it is not -30 with 2 hours of day light.

Texas used to be "tax Friendly", but now pRick Perry has raised property taxes sky high.
