What would be the best incentive?    How about paying Americans a salary where a new car is an option?    Yeah I would love to be able to buy a new car.   I would love to be able to go on vacation.    I would love to be able to fix up my house and replace the roof and dishwasher.    I would love to be able to afford season tickets to see Mizzou.   Henry Ford figured out that if you want people to buy your product than you have to pay people enough money to be able to do it.   In the this new wave of American greed that has been forgotten.

The 47% of US do not pay any federal income tax, so that means no $7,500 tax credit for them. Sorry, but this is a country by the rich and for the rich. Half of members of Congress are millionaires and out-of-touch with the needs of the average American. We need real change in Washington.

30 grand for a new car??? Ridiculous. Forget it, the average American can not afford it.

Sorry jim but your "incentives" list just didn't blow my skirt up. With  everything going up in price these days (except of course my wages) I think i'll keep nursing my 12 year old beater along. And as for electric cars...pfffftt. Forget it. But hey, thanks for the advice.

If the Ford pickup had lane change warning and backup camera i might be interested. The rest i wouldn't even consider. I hope the author has been to a dealer in the last 60 years because no matter what the "deal" offered is , once you get there its a different story. I have only gotten what i consider good deals on vehicles a couple times in my life. I was buying cash with no trade-in. Most people have trades so that is the end of the "hot deal". Thanks anyway but i will continue driving my present vehicle because i hate going into dealers.

Does anyone else have a problem with part of the incentives including "generous federal tax break", addressing the sector of the population who pays federal income tax, not talking to the 47% of Americans who already get " generous federal tax break" in the form of a kickback from the federal government.

Wonder how much Gorzelany was paid to advertise these cars for the manufacturers, because that's really all this article amounts to... one long auto advertisement.

The best incentive: "Your frame won't pass inspection."

Chevy Volt: If Chevy want's to sell us a Chevy Volt for 35k to 40k then make the car look and feel like a 35k to 40k car. Right now it looks and feels like a 20k car.

When are they going to charge a road tax on the electric cars based on mileage instead of no tax.

I used to buy beaters in my youth at a time when saving money for retirement was important. Now I only buy new cars about every six or seven years. I always pay cash plus using my trade in. I take the trade in to CarMax have them give me a written price guarantee, good for five days. I go to the new car dealership and negotiate the lowest price without a trade. After I get a firm price, we negotiate my trade in. The dealership will usually lowball your trade. This is when you pullout the price guarantee from CarMax. Usually a $2000 difference, the dealer will match the price. I sometimes also use the Costco auto-buying program.

Man, I need a new tow vehicle but at 40-50K I'm thinking I'm SOL. Looking for a used truck is getting more difficult as well as more and more folks are holding onto them or jacking the price up because they can get it. Something is seriously wrong when a company can give these big incentives and still make incredible profits. No one is really lowering prices on anything......been to a dentist lately, I think they're the worst.

Ever wonder why one gets discouts, 0% rates, invoice prices, rebates? You people need to wake up! The base price of that car is reflected by which one of these is avaiable! If you think you are getting a 0% interest rate - you are but you just paid more for that vehicle! Do you really think that 0% is free? People just do not know! They work and work for a car price and then get screwed by the financing! They just made another cool couple of grand off you! One expects a dealer to make money - but have you ever seen anyone complain about paying to little for a vehicle? Will not even get into the add-ons.The people who write these article know just enought to be dangerous!

For the 47% who pays no taxes and do not qualify for the $7,500 tax credit, my heart bleeds for you. Buy a different car. My friend just bought a new KIA optima Hybrid for approx. $21,000 and it gets 40 plus mpg. It is not the government or your neighbor that should be supporting your car purchase. People do not realize if you get rid of the government subsidies on everything supply and demand would adjust prices accordingly. I understand people need a safety net but not a mansion.
