How could you forget Bud Abbott. At one time Abbott and Costello were the highest earring actors in Hollywood yet thanks to the IRS he died penniless in a nursing home. He even went so far as to ask fans of Abbott and Costello to donate 25 cents to him hoping that if just 10% of all fans did this he would have been able to lead a decent life. On his death bed Lou Costello said he just heard of Abbotts troubles and if he heard earlier he would have helped him.
Abbott and Costello were ruined by the IRS when they rejected their deductions for the Lou Costello junior foundation, a non profit agency that the both gave vast sums of money to build parks for children in memorial of Lou Costello's son who drowned in a back yard pool accident. They failed to file the proper papers for charitable status and the IRS took them for back taxes plus interest and penalties. They even took a ring that was inherited by Lou Costello. Costello started a Vegas act. Abbott was older and could not do that kind of work anymore and so turned over his social security to a nursing home and there he died.
