If education is truly about the student then why is such a big part of most schools budgets dedicated to sports and attracting top athletics and why are the top paid staff at big colleges usually the coaches? College is about attracting kids and putting sports and school spirit in their heads so that they are distracted and do not realize that they are signing their lives away to get an education that probably will not lead to a good job or a career. A lot of educated people work at Wal-Mart and Mcdonalds. The fees are out of control and the price of books is too. College and taking advantage of the students is big business.

I do not know where these statistics come from. We are a middle class family and our friends are the same. Every one of the kids I know coming out of college are sitting on a minimum of fifty grand o student loans and some double that for a four year degree. The middle class supports this entire nation. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. But the middle class trudges along carrying the weight and responsibility for all. If we could stand to be poor the rich and the government would surely suffer.

student debt is the direct results of government involvement in education financing. when the government made money easily available the schools jacked their prices out of sight without worry that students would not pay, everything the government touches turns out bad.

To me, college doesn't seem to be the best investment.  Any social science or humanities degree generally qualifies you as a Barista at Star Bucks.  Chemistry is generally a pre-med or teaching degree.  There is fierce competition among Biology majors for wildlife jobs.  Computer Science seems to be the only field that is booming right now along with nursing.  For other jobs, it seems as though people need to get an entry level job in a work environment they enjoy and just work their way up.

$5,645 for 10 months.  At least you would have a job for awhile. Let's see $65,000 minus $5,645 = still quite a bit to pay.  No one twisted my arm to take out a student loan but that was the only way I was going to get a degree.  Just too expensive.  Let some of our state lottery money subsidize this venture.

You have to get three jobs and pay it back.

Maybe next time you'll think before you vote.

" I dream of a day when you will be judged NOT by the color of your skin but by the CONTENT OF YOUR CHARACTER"....MLK, may he rest in peace and please forgive us for erasing your dream with our liberal racist policy.

We are equal, we don't need a handout, we have been misled and we will overcome.

Some of your comments add positively nothing to this discussion. They are of no value to the issue.  Obama, Bush, Clinton, Bush, Reagan and so forth have nothing to do with the student loan program. They all voted for the law as well as the law being amended when brought to their desk from congress. Foreign countries you say educate for free. Actually, foreign countries in most cases don't have hundreds of colleges to attend like the USA because the countries are the size of our states. For instance, Montana is approximately the size of Japan. Montana, just over a million population. Japan 127 million. Not every one is college material and they are kids who learn trades. People do drive trucks, are plumbers, electricians HVAC technicians and a thousand other non college positions.  How many students from foreign lands come here to go to college, attain degrees and apply for citizenship? In many instances these are the new business innovators. Please tell me why any kid has to leave home to go to college? State school degrees are as good as any other degree. Harvard is over $30,000 a year. State schools if you live home are $6-9000 A year. Think hard before you enter into these loans and will you realistically be able to pay them back.

Get a job and start paying on it.  You may NOT get the job you want, but get one anyway.

Pay it off ASAP, or better yet don't go in debt in the first place

My personal favorite are those (from a certain minority race, especially) that take out loans and attend a class for a semester and then spend the money and default on the loan. They laugh their @sses off while others are responsible and have to pay their debt. It's just another scam for them.

Do we really want to ENCOURAGE people to work for the government? NO WAY! We should be figuring out ways to DISCOURAGE government service. Too many do-gooder holier and smarter than thou types there already.

Yeah... screw the private sector.  Let's give big loan breaks to public workers who get paid with tax dollars, most of which is generated by those poor schmucks in the private sector.  And then we can pay for it by taxing the private sector even more... at least until they go out of business, or lose their jobs.

Then what?
