How can Tennessee be on this list when it doesn't even have a state income tax? Low property costs, low cost of living, and a great environment. What's not to like? A "combined sales tax"? Are you kidding me? Sales tax is the one of the few taxes you can control. They most likely stuck Tenn in there in order to keep Maryland out. Take my word for it, you don't want to live in Maryland.

Tennessee is on this list?  Are you kidding me?  We moved here from New York 5 years ago and our property taxes went down 90 percent for the same price house.  I can get folks to work around my place for about 25 percent of what I had to pay people in New York.  Yes, there's a high sales tax, but not much more than NY.  And those taxes come back to the towns and counties to pay for things we had to pay for in property taxes up north.  So far as crime, yes it's bad in the inner cities of places like Knoxville, Nashville and Memphis, but there aren't a heck of a lot of retires moving to the worst part of Memphis.  We're mostly in more rural retirement areas.  Health care? Most retires are on Medicare so what difference does it make?  And there is a high poverty level which results in a kind of culture shock for Yankees.  But, again, most of our social circle is with other transplants.  We've never been so happy.

If you all notice it, every one of these states with the exception of Tenn is a democrat controlled state, long time democrat controlled state... coincidence? I think not... Tax and spend...that's what hand outs will get you....a bad place to live....

I'm retired and plan on staying PUT right here in California where my family has lived for many generations. If you're an active person, senior citizen or otherwise you'll never run out of things to do in California. But to relocate to California? Get ready for some cost of living 'sticker shock'.

Another story about how liberals/progressives/socialist/communist/Marxist (a rose by any other name is still a rose), are trying to destroy this country.

Most folks would like to retire near their children, if they have any, and if their children live in these ten states then they are the best place to retire.  Fairly pointless article.

And the worst?!!! California! with its dim supermajorities and out of control taxation. A real liberal utopia, if you want to know where the nation is heading look no further than mexifornia or socialist europe.

How amusing -  all of the states are the worst liberal blue states which makes sense. For all of their lies, liberal create a hell for the poor to live in because of their high taxes.
