Don't buy costumes -- swap 'em

The right attire can make or break Halloween for your small fry. Technically, last year's clown costume still fits. At age 4, though, your kid would really rather be Spider-Man.

But suppose there's no room in your budget for new holiday attire? Or suppose you object in principle to buying and discarding new duds every year?

Since 2007 an organization called Green Halloween has espoused end-of-October celebrations that reduce the impact on both the environment and children's health. One way to accomplish this is by trading costumes rather than trashing them.

Green Halloween and partners Swap.com and Kiwi Magazine Online are publicizing costume swaps in 37 states, the District of Columbia and three Canadian provinces. Although it's promoted as happening on Oct. 13, the event actually takes place on different dates in different states.

Some are kids-only, and some have adult and even pet costumes for trading. To find a swap in your region, follow the link above.

No nearby events? Organize your own. It can be really low-key, with just a few other parents in the neighborhood. Or put up invitations at your child care center, your kid's school or your place of worship. Green Halloween's website has a "swap how-to" section with useful tips for would-be organizers.
