There is a difference between MADE by hand, and ASSEMBLED by hand!!!!!!!!!!!!That's like saying a cake is made from scratch when it comes from a box, NO. When it comes to the iphone the parts are made by machine, they are just assembled by hand. This may sound like a matter of semantics but, there is a huge difference!!!

I am a carpenter.  The only thing I've ever made by hand is a snowball.  For everything else I used tools.

What a crap article... iPhones, whiskey & drug-running submarines make the list yet Steinway & Sons pianos do not? Was this written by a professional journalist or a lazy teenager?

Also hand made or not, tech crap will ONLY ever be as good as the supply of new replacement parts... or in other words, no matter how well built it is when it breaks 5 years from now & there are no more replacement parts you'll HAVE to spend more to buy a new one rather than fix the one you already have. The "digital age" may offer its share of breakthroughs but NO ONE wants you to mention its PLANNED OBSOLESENCE!

Assembled by hand and made by hand are completely different. An iPod/pad is assembled by hand and automated machines make the damn things...This article is stupid, just horrible

Now i know why all the products from China are crap,i just finished watching the documentary from the factory where they produce these items, the workers are so exausted and so tired of doing the same thing over and over, than they dont care anymore how the work is made they just want to finish the job, without thinking of quality.

Every thing I do here at wildwoodturning in Spencer Iowa is 100% HAND MADE IN THE USA ! from sustainable materials that even grew here !

But people are so used to prices at Wal- Mart & the like they are shocked at what hand made involves and have a hard time under standing the price , But since I am not paying some 10 year old 20 cents a day to work for me , IT IS WHAT IT IS , People need to look at it as paying a bit more FOR MORE & keeping that money local help us all !

While I appreciate hand crafted goods, the bottom line for me is this:
...if it works and I can afford it, it's good enough...

Assembled by hand vs made by hand?  There is a big difference, but I still give a lot of credit to those people and companies who assemble.  However, it is hard to beat the quality of things that are completely made by hand.
If you want to see something that is absolutely gorgeous, and completely 100% made by hand here in the USA (Athens, GA to be exact), check out this web site.  www.manitopercussion.com    These are solid wood musical instruments, the type normally found in a music store that are factory manufactured by the thousands.  The ones made by Manito at Manito Percussion start with a very large tree log, cow or goat skin, and raw stainless steel.  Four months later, he has the most beautiful looking and great tonal sounding musical instrument you have ever seen or heard or played on.
Each instrument is a work of art and completely hand made, including the hardware (except for a few screws).  Beautiful items for Christmas and special occasion presents, also.
This is the kind of thing I think of when I read "Surprising Items Made by Hand".

In Japan, there are still small craftsmen who hand make things like tweezers, aluminum sauce pans, leather shoes and thread snip scissors (you know the ones that are one piece, bent in the middle?)  Some carpenters can make a whole chest of drawers without using a single nail.

what a facinating definition of made by hand.  Just beause someone touched a product or put a completely unnecessary and bothersome plastic decoration on at the end does not mean that it was made by hand.  Assembling extruded plastic parts after the fact may be defined as assembled by hand but not made by hand.  This is a sad day for true craftsmen and the english language when people will accept such a false definition.

None of these really surprised me except for surgical tools, I figured they were mostly just stamped parts that were assembled. About the drug subs, I would think they were hand made you cant go to your Grainger catalog and order a drug sub.
