well another one to add the list would been the eye toy which playstation came up with round '03. Which if they followed up with could have beaten the  x box kinects which is basically the same concept.

could have  avoided them going into the finacial slump they're in but oh well.....

Note, by the way, that Xerox was late in the game, or missed out on a couple others as well.  They were one of the companies that originated Ethernet, yet were very late in getting products to market that exploited it, ceding it instead to DEC and Intel - who cashed in.  AND their Interpress page description language actually predated PostScript - but again, they never exploited it.  Palo Alto Reserach Center (PARC) has been brilliant - too bad the marketing couldn't keep up.

Interesting commentary...WANG Laboratories introduced a very early version of the iPad back in the mid-1980s.  Didn't take off and did not have a finger driven interface.  But still was a very early iPad.

This shows you that having a good idea idea itself is not enough. You have to "foresee" the potential commercial sucess and sometimes invenrtors are not tha good at it.

The "window" systems was rotten in an IBM basement until somebody today a billionaire saw it improved and make commercial and today a high percentage of all computer on earth use windows.

Apple brought in the engineer to head up the new product, MJ, how is this not giving credit to the engineer, who is now a multi-millionaire?

if yahoo had purchased facebook in 2006, it would have prolly ended up killing facebook due to lack of a future vision.

Those are big misses but obvious misses are Kodak inventing the digital camera and keeping with film (now almost bankrupt) and Rolex passing on the digital watch (Swatch took the idea producing watches for dirt cheap)

Bummer.  This great article reminds me of my missed opportunities.  The first was when as a student at a college in Pittsburgh, I let my uncle convince me not to transfer to a computer repair school because computers weren't going anywhere.  Sad  Another opportunity was when my uncle in Detroit tried to convince me to go into the computer field.  I didn't.  He ended up getting a computer degree, starting a company, and getting rich off Y2K.  Recently, four years ago Jessie J became one of my first MySpace friends.  I complimented one of her songs and missed the chance to compliment her on another because I found inerests in Facebook and Justin.tv.  Who knows where that could have gone as I watch her star rise.  So you can call me, Mr. Missed Opportunites Man.

If they had sold out to another IT company no only would the standards have changed but the creative genius that sparked the creation of this company would have been eventual replaced with the employees their own crew thus disaster for the public at large.

I'm not sure where Google fits in this story.  Heck, earlier in the story, it was mentioned that Yahoo were the guys who directly rejected Facebook.

Roday: Your example does fit the template, but remember what MS in MSN stands for.  Direct mention of either of the XBox's competitors in a positive light would not happen if it can be avoided.

What about Playstaion and Nintendo? Nintendo was working with Sony to make PS then ditched that for Panasonic's CD-i, then Sony decided to use the PS console for itself which hurt Nintendo... I think anyways...

One of the companies you mention, IBM, owed it's original growth to a major competitor oversight:  I believe Remington turned down the revolutionary design of a typewriter using a ball instead of keys to print.  The Selectric typewriter drove IBM into the huge company stratosphere.

[BRIEFING.COM] S&P futures vs fair value: +5.50.  Nasdaq futures vs fair value: +9.00.   A decidedly positive tone in the prior session snapped a six-session losing streak by providing stocks with their best one-day bounce in two months. Momentum from the move had faded overnight, but a bout of buying in the last hour has helped lift stock futures. A positive tone is evident in Europe, where the continent's major bourses are sporting strong gains in the face of a reduced ... More
