Stay at a Hilton property, such as Hampton Inn or Homewood Suites, and you will likely be very happy. I have stayed in Hilton properties all over the U.S. and I have never been disappointed. Yes, they are usually $20 more than the dirty, dumpy ones but worth it. Also, check tripadvisor before you rent. It has saved me from booking several places that looked okay on the web, but were actually horrible as stated by reviewers.

Have stayed in several different motels and most were reasonably clean and comfortable. If you have a serious problem, make sure you tell someone at the desk and if it is not properly amended contest the credit card payment. This often works and if it happens often they will have to change their habits or go under. The squeeky wheel gets the grease; or refund.

If you want a great hotel experience then stay at the Hilton Garden Inn in Rochester, Minnesota.  That is by far the best hotel I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing.  It is a good, clean hotel with great, courteous service.  GREAT WORK HILTON GARDEN INN!!!!

If you're going to stay at any hotel/motel just remember this jingle: Lysol will help you get your zee's!

Can we say plastic matress covers boys and girls?

I stayed at a welfare motel in Westchester County N.Y. while working in that area. The place was filthy, the manager / owner got pissy when I asked for clean sheets and towels (what, again ?) and the phone in the room was a pay phone.....I kid you not, a pay phone. The motels mentioned in this article have nothing on this place. Not mentioning who or what the owner was, but most of you know that anyways.

Some time you can't judge a book by it's cover. I have not stayed at these with the negative comments, and yet they can all be correct.

I can say, I have stayed at the Econo-Lodge in Lebanon, In several times. Yet I can not say anything negative about this one.

You don't feel like a guest here, they make you feel like their extended family. Clean...yes. Every where, inside and outside.

I never had any problem with a stay there. And haven't heard any guest complain either. Granted I only stay there one week a year. But with several others in the area, and I stayed at a couple others..

....Econo-Lodge is always my first choice, at least the one in Lebanon, Indiana.

I am a former hotel manager and I can tell you most all of the major chains are independently owned such as Choice is 100% franchised. Remember the 3 major segments; Economy, Mid-Level and Full Service. The general rule, becarefull selecting YOUR hotel, a hotel that has changed franchises manytimes may mean they lost their "flag" due to not making improvements that are manditory to each brand's specific requirments to keep off lists like this one...  Its is the obligation of every hotel owner to make sure it is a continuously maintained money pit, this is how one Days Inn is better than another.  Do your research, ask questions, such as when was it built what type of improvments have you done recently and so on.. All hotels no matter the market have trouble with pest, stains, smells and equitment faillure!!!! But its how the hotel deals with an issue is whats important if you remember sometimes **** happens.  I just bought a nice house...and it has ants its clean just like me! Ants come from the ground ants have mant breeds that not all treatments work for it is hard to get rid of them. If your hotel room had ants I promise the hotel has adressed the issue with an pest controll company. Bed bugs, dont get mad at me please, they come from guests....period.. someone who stayed the night before you lives in a dirty crap hole and brought them in somehow.  Bed bugs are most commonly found in dark damp areas I hope the holel you choose is not dark and damp :).  The point is its not the chain, its owners and opperators just use your head next time you pick a place to stay. The Motel 6 by Moe's Fried chicken with bars in the windows off a deserted exit ramp might not be worth the 20 bucks you saved.

What really amazes me is that unlike food industries, hotels are rarely, if ever, visited by health inspectors. Unless somebody dies in the room of unknown causes, or at least 10 complaints of rodents are placed in the same week, most hotels are given a clean bill of health. That's a joke. I'm very sure I don't know and have never met many of the people who've stayed in any hotels I've been to, but I bet they all left a piece of themselves behind. In some cases, it was likely from their behinds.

You can always ask to see the room before you sign in to pay. Maybe if enough people turned away they'd get the message.

The majority of chains listed in this article are ones I've stayed in.  Maybe I've been fortunate to have stayed in cities where the motel was the exception rather than the rule.  I've never been plagued by bugs (either in the bed, floor or bath), have not had chunks of wall or ceiling caving in, there was no mold or mildew visible and none of the staff were ever obviously stoned.  I have, however stayed in some mom & pop motels that were abysmal! The rooms had stained linens, they reeked of cigarette smoke, pot or urine (sometimes all three), the bathroom fixtures were rusty and the water that came out of the faucets stunk of sulfer! They were dank, dirty and far more disgusting than any chain I've ever stayed at.  Oh, and if you're wondering why I would stay in a place like that--I was on my way to Alaska with my husband who was in the military at the time. Try finding a motel of any description off the AlCan in the Yukon Territory!

I HAVE TWO BAD EXPERIENCES...ONE AT A DAYS IN IN GREEN RIVER, UTAH...THEY WERE VERY NICE BUT THEY THREW ME INTO THE SMOKING ROOM WHICH REEKED OF CIGARS AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT ELSE...TERRIBLE...AND I HAD TO KEEP A CHAIR UNDER THE DOORKNOB BECAUSE THE DOOR DIDN'T SHUT GOOD...IT WAS THE ONLY ROOM THAT YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO GO THRU THE LOBBY...PLUS THE DOOR FACED AN EMPTY FIELD...GREAT FOR A WOMAN ALONE...THE OTHER BAD EXPERIENCE WAS A HOTEL IN CARLBAD, NM...THEY LOST MY RESERVATION OR THEY SAID THEY DIDN'T HAVE IT...CONSIDERING ALL THE PEOPLE THAT WERE IN THE OFFICE COMPLAINING OF NON WORKING AIR I THINK THEY GAVE MY ROOM TO SOMEONE ELSE....FOUND ANOTHER MOTEL WHICH WAS CHEAPER AND VERY NICE...NOW WHEN I TRAVEL I ALWAYS MAKE SURE I CHECK THE COMMENTS BEFORE I MAKE THE RESERVATION AND IF I  AM WITH THE DOGS I GO TO LA QUINTA...NICE CLEAN ROOMS AND GREAT STAFF...LA QUINTA...GET MORE HOTELS BY NAT'L AND STATE PARKS PLEASE.....

These hotels are cheap, dirty, and run by Middle Easterners on a very low standard.

The worst is the Motel 6 on Andy Devine in Kingman, Az.
Rooms were dirty, The manager, well I can't use th words to describe him, and he was a very foul mouth person. The bathrooms were not clean, I mean this place should be in better slums and ghettos.
If you complain to the manager he tells you to get out or he will call the police.
If you call Motel 6 headquarters and complain, they tell you they can do nothing because their motel are franchised and it is out of their hands.
The one in kingman does not want diabetics in his motel either, they might leave a needle somewhere. How do i know this, well i am an elderly person and he did it to me, told us never to come back

Worst motel....The Motel 6 at Jamestown NY.  We call it "Motel Sucks" . Made reservation, but when we got there, the manager, Ren (yes his name was Ren) said they had people stay over, so our room was not available. His mother, a little scrawny 80 y/o lady (we called her Stimpy) said she had an 'extra' room, so we went to look at it, and it smelled like smoke and was really dirty. We got our money back and left, never to return to ANY Motel Sucks.

Before making a reservation in any motel not  owned by a chain, ask if the owners are Patel; If the answer is yes you are guarantee bed bugs, dirty sheets, dirty carpets, among other amenities.

The article is pointless, and it's just so unfair to talk low cost hotels and any such kinds this way.  They are Cheap!  Of couse, the qualities are low.  Ritz-Carlton, Shangrila, Marriot... would never be talked this way.  Of course, they provide nice room and comfy bed.  But They are Expensive!
