5 brands that could be gone by 2016

Some of these companies are doing well enough to be bought out; others, poorly enough to go out of business. Either way, these names could change or go away.

I've had DirecTV for 10 years and have had zero problems.  None, nada, zip.  I can always get someone on the phone, and they don't hang up until the issue is resolved (i.e. movie streamed slow).

AT&T is the worst company in America, BY FAR.  I have them for my land line and my internet.  They suck, pure and simple.  Their acquisition of DTV will be the end of a great company with great service.  I hope to God Congress does not allow this to go through.  Not only will AT&T muck up the company, they'll charge me a premium to do it.  Plus you know the NFL package will go away in a heartbeat or I'll be charged twice the amount I pay today.

Please do the right thing and stop this.

Northwest was bought by Delta (), Continental merged with United () and U.S. Airways joined with American Airlines (). The recent consolidations in the industry have been successful, leading to significant cost cuts.

Oh yes they cut cost, reduced competition, raised fares and added extra fees.

I hope that I will see the end of cable. It is so abusive, with those pathetic shows, followed by pathetic commercials and sick "reality shows"(basically they left the camera on while nothings happen and they aired that) Tired of the pathetic strategy of worthless people talking about themselves and news from talking heads with foam in their mouths preaching apocalyptic views. No shows why sexy girls, nothing intellectual or deep. Everything it's planned to disinform and create confusion. Everything that counts (workers, union, poor people, health) completely ignored. just Wall Street and the army of Bernie Maddoff  counts. Just a hose of manure 24/7 in our faces. and they want to charge us for that. I disconnected years ago. Hope all of them will be gone soon.

I'd hate to see the end of Alaska Airlines. It was originally Wein Airlines and started by friends of my father. He worked for them in the 40's as an airplane mechanic and bush pilot. Direct TV? Have had it for 8 years and not bad, except the price keeps going up, up, up!

Although it has its faults, hence nobody's perfect, DirecTV has provided me with excellent service and programming, it has by far the best customer service representatives in the industry.  It would be detrimental to it's customers to have AT&T monopolize the industry.

I haven't had cable, direct TV, or any other form of paid broadcast TV since 2003. I use Netflix, and free over the air broadcast with an HD antenna. For internet I use Verizon FIOS which gives me 50Mbps for only $40 a month and no monthly cap like COMCAST or those other rats. It's all about the money people. These companies have a mindset that no amount of profit is enough so customer service sucks because that is an expendable expense. And I agree that AT&T is the worst along with Bank of America. I had Cingular back when they were still a decent name to get away from AT&T and when I heard they were being absorbed from the company I was trying to get away from I looked at my wife and said "Now just watch; our first bill from AT&T will be completely hosed" and it was, along with the next two. I since dropped them and went with T-Mobile. That was in 2004. As the years pass by and more and more computers answer phones instead of people customer service is just going to get worse unless somebody steps in and enforces change.

Alaska and Hillshire aren't going anywhere.  Even if they get bought out, they'll remain as viable brand names.

Come on, MSN - You had this same article on here last week. You folks are really lazy - hopefully minimum wage with NO benefits.

AT & T blows. DirecTv is worse. Long story short: they double billed me for almost 7 months, all the while I kept telling them about it and to stop. Three different managers promised me that they'd look into it and fix it - they didn't. Filed a complaint with the state attorney general's office but was told off the record that nothing would be done due to their DC connections.

Merging these 2 $hitty companies has GOT to be the sign of the Apocalypse!

If they get rid of the Alaskan art on the tail I wil quit flying them. I love that logo! And a god airline to fly, too if not one fo the best American carriers.

I have Direct for just a few more days.  I've given them more of my money than they deserve.  Going with the old fashioned antenna.  Tired of paying for commercials.  Cable started out as being less commercials, that is long gone.  Paying for commercials doesn't make sense to me.  Going to save myself $80.00 -120.00 a month. Nothing but junk on tv anymore anyways.

When Comcast and AT&T die all will be good in America...
Jul 23, 2014 5:18AM
the only reason that ATT wants to buy it is to take out a competitor. its also easier and cheaper to buy your customers than offering good service to attract them
Jul 23, 2014 3:23AM
DirectTV is all that. One of the few companies that aims to please the customer, of course they have to rip you off for a few years first before they feel you are worthy of some free ****. I must say most issues that I have had with them, I have been WELL compensated for my frustration. Been with them for well over 10 years. That dish has followed me around like an old Buick. I have had more free subscriptions of NFL Sunday Ticket and complimentary HBO than I can count.

At&t is one of the WORST COMPANIES EVER!
Jul 22, 2014 11:53PM
I  have had DirecTV since 1999 and have enjoyed every minute of it.  The article state that DirecTV has 38 million viewers as compared to AT&T's 5.7 millions for it's fiber connections.  If the government lets this go through then be prepared to have your DirecTV rates to go up. This will force you to go to AT&T fiber connection which they are trying to push on everyone.  Century Link has this type of TV and its junk.  When to many people are using the system it load down.  Plus it will take years to get fiber to all the homes
