Test-tube burger hits the menu
The 'Frankenburger' cost about $385,000 to produce in a lab. It will be served for the first time at a London restaurant next week.
One lucky diner next week will get to try the first 'Frankenburger,' made with 3,000 bits of artificial meat grown from the stem cells of a cow.
If that isn't enough to turn your stomach, consider this: The meat is "gray with a slippery texture similar to squid or scallop," The Daily Mail reports. The 5-ounce burger cost about $385,000 to produce in a lab, and the first one will be served at a restaurant in west London.
It's probably the most expensive burger in history. And while it sounds fairly revolting, there's a good reason it's being developed.
Stem cells from one animal could be used to make 1 million times more meat than you'd get from the average beef carcass, The Independent reports. That would feed many more people while reducing the need for land, water and feed.
"If we don't do anything, meat will become a luxury food and will become very expensive," Mark Post, the scientist who developed the burger, told The Independent.
There were four basic steps, The Daily Mail reports:
- First the stem cells were taken out of a cow's muscle.
- Those cells then multiplied in a broth and became a sticky tissue similar to an undercooked egg.
- The cells were then put through what would be similar to muscular exercise in a cow. Basically, they were stuck to Velcro and stretched.
- The final stretched "meat" was chopped up and formed into a burger along with pieces of lab-grown animal fat.
This makes me not want to eat beef again.... FAKE MEAT??? Its not enough that the government allows us to be poisoned by additives, pesticides and other unnatural compounds that lead to cancer and who knows what else. Now, there is fake meat! Be wary we are not in Kansas anymore!

I thought McDonalds already used some kind of filler, either vegetable based or some other unknown but federally approved thing. Do you ever notice how the burger meat is virtually tasteless at McD's and BK and Jack in the Crack? I assume this explains the overabundance of sauces and/or ketchup and mustard. But if you get some extra lean ground beef and make a burger at home, the meat actually has some flavor. This summer I have been doing a lot of that, just because I can't get over how delicious it is compared with what we got used to picking up during the week in the drive-thru. The scandals with horsemeat and now this just make eating fast food exceptionally scary. They are going to push the lowest quality food on us that they possibly can without being fined. Eating "meat-goo" that is synthesized sounds horrible, gross, and not worth it. How disgusting. Support your local taqueria and mom and pop cafes, and forget these crap-burger places. Put 'em out of business!
