The city with the worst drivers is . . .

Slate develops a list after looking at research reports and accident data. The result probably won't surprise you.

http://www.smartmotorist.com/traffic-and-safety-guideline/older-drivers-elderly-driving-seniors-at-the-wheel.htmlThere has never been a credible list of cities with the worst drivers, but Slate has just come up with its best estimate.

Using research reports from Allstate (ALL) and other sources, as well as automobile fatality data and pedestrian accident figures, Slate names Miami as the city with the worst drivers in America.

It wasn't even close, Brian Palmer writes. Miami comes in first in automotive fatalities and pedestrian strikes. And when it comes to "obscenity-laced tirades of their fellow drivers," Miami is tops again.

Palmer doesn't mention the age of drivers in Miami, but surely that must be a factor. Florida leads the country in the number of older drivers and also leads the country in the number of fatal car accidents involving drivers older than 75, according to AARP. A 1997 study said that older people make up 9% of the U.S. population but were responsible for 17% of all pedestrian deaths, according to Smart Motorist.

Florida has some of the highest auto insurance rates in the country, The Tampa Bay Times reports. One of the largest insurers there, State Farm, raised its average auto rates four times between 2009 and 2011.

A State Farm spokesman told the newspaper the rate increase was due to skyrocketing personal injury claims related to auto accidents in the state.

Two other Florida cities also appear on Slate's list. Hialeah ranks No. 3 and Tampa comes in at No. 4, Palmer writes.

Rounding out the top five are Philadelphia at No. 2 and Baltimore at No. 5.

Americans drive like crap anyways. How many of you have ever given someone the middle finger when a driver behind you flashes his lights to let you know he would like to pass??? Do you think that just because you are driving near the posted speed limit you own the left lane. Are any of you aware that the left lane is for overtaking the slower moving traffic. Have you ever seen a sign that says "Slower Traffic Keep Right" or the other one that says "Keep Right Except to Pass".

What about turn signals, do your cars have them?? Did your car come with an instruction manual to show you how to use them?? Can you read??

Arrogant, ignorant, and just disrepectful.

Ahh, Chicago drivers... where the traffic light could still be red, and the person behind you will honk for not going already. Ugh.

They got it right.  I agree 110% about Miami.

Now, I ain't no shrinking violet when it comes to driving.  After all, I lived and drove in Atlanta for 20 years.

But I live in SW Florida now and I've driven in Miami twice.....and NEVER again.

Talk about a white-knuckle ride.  UNBELIEVABLE !!!!

I used to drive a semi but got tired of all the female drivers that cant stay in their lanes and smash into the side of my truck cause they are texting /on the phone putting on make up and then try to BLAME me if their inability to drive. need proof drive down any highway get behind a caravan/suv ( all female driven ) watch as said vehicle drifts all over the road my guess most female drivers cant drive 1 mile straight WITHOUT hitting either lane marker

It is not just Miami. I have lived in Fl for 11 years the whole state has some of the dumbest drivers I have ever seen. Mr fat Cat hit the nail on the head. They drive like they are in a 3rd world country.

When I saw the headline, before I opened the article, I said it would have to be Miami.  I lived there for about 3 years, and It definitely is the worst in the USA.

I vote for Jacksonville, Fl.

Red light running abounds, following to close, driving way to fast or to slow, cell phone use and texting.

Never a signal for lane changing let alone a right or left turn. they do however know how to use the famous finger signal. It seems the worst drivers for speeding, lane changing, following to close are young females driving like the think they are Dario F. Danika Patrick. They usually are behind the wheel of a auto that is not capable of handling the maneuvers they are trying and they drive it like it's a Porsche. Idiots!! The best ever was a driver with the sunroof open drying her fingernails and steering with her knees.

OH!,, No one ever recognizes a pedestrian crosswalk.

Actually amazed to hear this--Pennsylvania drivers are amazingly ignorant and rude. Maybe they are #2?

Each place that we all live seems like they have some of the worst drivers in the Country.  At least we think so.  Maybe we just have the rudest drivers in the solar system.  They prove it every day showing that if you are in their lane or not, you are in their way.  You get the bird or someone is cussing you out in one way or another.  They are not courteous, at least to others.  But there is some that are.  Most all drivers are driving at least 20 to 40 miles an hour over the posted speed limit.  There just isn't enough enforcement to get them all.  I might push it 2 to 3 mph over but no more than that.  It is much better mileage at 65 than 80.  Well just expect the other drivers to do the wrong thing all the time and you will come out of driving much better.   Good luck and be safe.

Statistically, Miami might be on the top of the list but I dare you to drive in Denver and the immediate surrounding area.  Drivers will cross three lanes to make a turn they should got over for two blocks before.  They never signal for turns or lane changes, and they pass and change lanes in intersections.  And those are just a few ways in which they endanger the lives of others on the road.  The bad thing is, there is no action by the police to enforce the laws.

It's normal in Philly to break all laws. It starts at the top and is learned over time by all.

Has anyone attempted driving in Reno Nv? With all the road construction every year and the red light runners ,speeders, tailgaters ,inattentive drivers(cell phones ,magazines, hair styling) three lane changers all at once without a hesitation or blinkers. It is very unusually to drive through the town without seeing at least one to two car accidents or one or more pull over's by police, I wouldn't know I was in Reno.

I have been in every State but Oregon and Idaho. The worst drivers are Boston,. Second worst is a tie between New York and DC. LA is 4th, Chicago 5th , Miami 6th, San Francisco 7th. Dallas is 8th  Atlanta 9th and Philadelphia is 10th.

Boston drivers ignore all vehicles. New York has every car color for the last 15 years on every abutment and Jersey barrier..

DC has many foreigners, some of whom do not  have a word for "snow" in their language
