McDonald's dumps Chicken Selects from menu

The company is also booting the apple walnut salad. Is there anything good left to eat?

File photo of McDonalds Chicken Selects in March 2011 ( Martin Lee/Rex Features)McDonald's (MCD) is cutting Chicken Selects and apple walnut salad from its menu. Does that leave anything for health-conscious diners looking for a quick meal?

Judging from the outcry on Twitter, the answer seems to be no.

"McDonald's discontinued Chicken Selects. . . My life is officially over," wrote one dismayed customer on the social-media site. "I guess I'll never be eating McDonald's ever again just (because) they are no longer making Chicken Selects," another customer wrote.

The company touts its Chicken Selects as "premium finger food for picky people." They were made from chicken breast filets and ran about 380 calories for a three-piece serving.

But apparently, picky people were just a little too picky. One McDonald's franchisee said that the Chicken Selects didn't sell well enough nationally, The Chicago Tribune reports. A spokeswoman confirmed to the newspaper that Chicken Selects and apple walnut salad will be cut, and that the company is reviewing options for its Angus Third Pounder.

The Tribune speculates that the move is clearing the way for new products, perhaps a McWrap sandwich with grilled or fried chicken. McDonald's has also been testing chicken wings at some restaurants.

Which returns us to a question asked all the time by calorie-counting parents rushing their kids' Happy Meal orders through the McDonald's drive-thru: Is there anything on this menu for me to eat?

Chicken selects were healthy?  23 grams of fat, 3.5g saturated fat, 900mg sodium.

Shocking that healthy items don't sell at McDonald's.

Next you'll tell me Weight Watchers don't hold meetings at the Golden Corral

Goes to show, What people claim they want and what they buy can be two if not three different things.

If its not selling why have it on the menu.
Last I looked McD is in the business  to sell what folks are willing to buy. And not to be their health nanny.

I remember back when all they served was hamburgers, cheese burgers, Big Macs, fries, sodas and shakes.  The food was cheap and it was good.  So much for the old days.

Are these writers complete idiots? MCDONALDS CHICKEN SELECTS ARE ONE OF THE HIGHEST CALORIE ITEMS ON THE FREAKING MENU.  They were never a heathly item nor did McDonald's ever claim they were healthy.  MSN IS A JOKE.

McDonald's isn't in business to make people healthy. They're in business to serve a product consumers want. End of story. If you don't like it, don't buy it. If it doesn't sell, drop it from the menu.

Look, if you want to eat healthy, don't go to McDonalds, or ANY fast food restaurant for that matter.  It's silly that this is even reported on.  This is a free country.  People can eat whatever they want.  If McDonalds wants to sell junk food, and people want to buy it, let them!

Bravo McDonalds!!!!!  If it doesn't sell...then WHY should they have to sell?  They will join some of the other good-by businesses if they don't have common sense about things!  IT's been crazy that we are being taught by the food police and you have to know who that is.....that we are too stupid to fed ourselves properly...the majority of us DO and I personally am sick of someone telling me how I can eat!

If you want to eat healthy, stay home and cook it yourself, from local ingredients.

it has been proven time and time again that MOST folk who eat at fast food places DO NOT BUY these "healthy" alternatives. the onyl reason places really have em is to appease the assanyne minority of ****s who if they have such a damn problem with fast food should just not eat there. they should keep their ****ing mouths and opinions to themselves anbd let people who like fast food eat it.

McDonalds sells stuff people buy, they have tried for years to sell so called healthy items, no one buys them, what you want them to do go broke. The real reason people are fat these days is because they don't exercise, it has nothing to do with their diet. When I was young, all I ever did was eat and so did everyone I knew, yet practically no one was overweight, because we walked everywhere.

I worked at Domino's Pizza's headquarters, and this group or that group was always clamoring for healthier pizza options.  So we put lowfat cheese and lowfat pepperoni into most stores, and threw most of it out as no one ordered it.  When people want healthy food they don't go to these places.

not sure where fried chicken "fingers" are considered a healthy alternative but if they weren't selling then I can understand McDs dropping them.  The Angus third pounders are pretty good but overpriced when compared to the rest of the burgers.  Before doing away with them, they should try lowering the price to see if sales increase.

And one thing about the Angus burgers.  People going to fast food restaurants aren't differentiating between Angus beef and "regular" beef so charging more for the burgers than they charge for the quarter pounder or big mac is seen simply as a more expensive burger.
