NBC Sports to sponsor firearm trade show
The network is a longtime sponsor of the event and will continue to support it despite a renewed debate over gun control.
Amid a nationwide debate about gun laws, Comcast's (CMCSA) NBC Sports is continuing to sponsor one of the biggest gun shows in the country.
The SHOT Show, which runs in Las Vegas from Tuesday to Friday, last year attracted more than 57,000 attendees and 1,600 exhibitors. To be sure, not anyone can get into the show: It's not open to the public, and only commercial buyers and sellers of shooting, hunting and related trades are allowed, according to the show's website.
The support of the show isn't new for NBC Sports. It's been involved "for several years as part of our commitment to our outdoor programming block," NBC Sports spokesman Greg Hughes tells MSN Money.
While Hughes wouldn't disclose the amount of its sponsorship, he did note that the value is "very nominal."
NBC Sports Network, which changed its name from the Versus network over a year ago, airs outdoor programming such as "Whitetail Diaries," which features "the best hunting stories from across the country that highlight North America's most popular game animal, the whitetail deer," according to the network's site.
The sponsorship may raise some eyebrows given NBC Sports host Bob Costas' on-air call for stricter gun control during a December game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys. Later that month, a gunman killed 20 children at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn.
As a result, gun control laws have been under debate, with some pushing for stricter regulations. Some Americans have been buying guns as they grow concerned that U.S. lawmakers will restrict access to firearms.
"If I had 1,000 AR-15s I could sell them in a week,” gun dealer Jack Smith told the New York Times. He referred to a type of semiautomatic rifle that was used by the Newtown school shooter.
In the meantime, as the SHOT show gets ready to open Tuesday, NBC Sports won't be alone in supporting the convention. According to the show's website, other sponsors include Dodge Ram, the city of Las Vegas and the Outdoor Channel.

My respect for NBC just jumped a lot. Thank you NBC. Face it, firearms are a part of our sporting culture, and I am not talking about their use in hunting animals that we do not intend to eat, i.e.- just for thrills and trophies.
The Olympic Games feature competitions in archery, marksmanship, javelin, discus, hammer toss, wrestling, weight lifting, and boxing; each of which could be considered a martial skill. Even the pole vault, hurdles, broad jump, running, swimming, and rowing are skills that could prove useful in a battle; especially if you were losing. So marksmanship is a sport recognized around the world, whereas committing murder, a massacre, or genocide is only a sport to lunatics and madmen.
If I am correct, Zen Buddhists employ archery as a tool to achieving concentration and enlightenment, much like meditating with your eyes open, but they are loath to use their skills to kill or murder. Actually, my impression is that they feel that they would violate their souls if they used their skill to commit violence, even in self defense. Marksmanship is fun in many ways, and , for me, it is a Zen thing, and not training in preparation for violence. Someone actually pointed out recently that if firearms ownership was related to firearms violence, then there should be a host of murders at gun ranges.
Many millions of people upon this earth own firearms. According to "civilians own approximately 650 million firearms worldwide, roughly 75 per cent of the known total. Civilians in the United States own some 270 million of these. According to h an estimated 34 percent of the citizens in the United States own firearms, and there are thought to be more than 200 million firearms in private hands." Thirty-four percent of three hundred and thirty million Americans comes to over one hundred and twelve million firearms owners.
If the vile, filthy, noose worthy Feds re-instituted funding for STATE MENTAL HOSPITALS with money saved from the elimination of Corporate Welfare and Black Only Great Society programs and payoffs, the dangerously crazed and the deranged homeless could get to live in those hospitals...AGAIN---like they did before the Politiscums pulled the financial plug and, embarrassingly, unleashed them for The Little People to deal with. You know, us...the ones the creeps want to disarm and subjugate.
Libtard Radio (NPR) today voiced their Usual Suspect, Viciously Ignorant, Flailing Whiner spew today, as usual, and don't even mind that one of their Whirly Head Yappers, in the same blurb, actually called for more laws, regulations and Executive Orders...and then said, in a lametastic attempt to discount calls for enforcement of the THOUSANDS of EXISTING "gun laws", that THE LAWS DON'T WORK !!!!!!!!!!

One involves a meaningless ritual in which we look to an insignificant creature of little intelligence for insight into the future.
The other involves a groundhog....
Firearm related deaths in the US attributable to homicides were approximately 8,500 more or less of the 13,000 to 15,000 homicides committed annually each year in the US (68%+/-). Firearm related deaths attributable to suicide are approximately 18,200 annually or approximately 52% of the 35,000 suicides committed, this based on the 2011 stats. There are additional deaths by firearms classified as accidents or justifiable shooting by law enforcement officers but these statistics do not appear to be consistent or verifiable from a single data source but may account for the difference between the 26,700 and the 30,000 number that is commonly quoted . Of the aforementioned categories only the homicides category should be for debate and conversation if at all. In the case of suicides where we have on average 35,000 individuals committing suicide each year only approximately 52% were because of a firearm. Not to minimize the tragedy of a suicide and the fact that a firearm played a part in the form of suicide those death are nevertheless not caused by the firearm itself but by mental illness or depression. One can not legislate a cure for this and no form of gun legislation is going to address that issue. The fact that many in this string of comments continue to proffer the total figures of 30,000 firearm deaths a year as a" headlining cornerstone" for supporting their agenda of enacting further gun legislation is a gross misrepresentation.
There is now a new piece out on MSNBC that states the shooter at Sandy Hook used only pistols to kill the children and staff members. He did have an AR-15 Assault weapon however, it was found in the vehicle and was not used in the shootings.
If this is indeed true; I say SHAME on OBAMA and the liberal press for using this shameless tragedy to further their agenda and attacks on our 2nd Amendment.
Connecticut has some this country's strongest gun laws, how did that work out for the kids in Sandy Hook? Gun bans ad stricter gun laws are NOT THE ANSWER!!!
