NBC Sports to sponsor firearm trade show

The network is a longtime sponsor of the event and will continue to support it despite a renewed debate over gun control.

The SHOT Show, which runs in Las Vegas from Tuesday to Friday, last year attracted more than 57,000 attendees and 1,600 exhibitors. To be sure, not anyone can get into the show: It's not open to the public, and only commercial buyers and sellers of shooting, hunting and related trades are allowed, according to the show's website.

The support of the show isn't new for NBC Sports. It's been involved "for several years as part of our commitment to our outdoor programming block," NBC Sports spokesman Greg Hughes tells MSN Money.

While Hughes wouldn't disclose the amount of its sponsorship, he did note that the value is "very nominal."

NBC Sports Network, which changed its name from the Versus network over a year ago, airs outdoor programming such as "Whitetail Diaries," which features "the best hunting stories from across the country that highlight North America's most popular game animal, the whitetail deer," according to the network's site.

The sponsorship may raise some eyebrows given NBC Sports host Bob Costas' on-air call for stricter gun control during a December game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys. Later that month, a gunman killed 20 children at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn.

As a result, gun control laws have been under debate, with some pushing for stricter regulations. Some Americans have been buying guns as they grow concerned that U.S. lawmakers will restrict access to firearms.

"If I had 1,000 AR-15s I could sell them in a week,” gun dealer Jack Smith told the New York Times. He referred to a type of semiautomatic rifle that was used by the Newtown school shooter.

In the meantime, as the SHOT show gets ready to open Tuesday, NBC Sports won't be alone in supporting the convention. According to the show's website, other sponsors include Dodge Ram, the city of Las Vegas and the Outdoor Channel.

Hmmm of the 30,000 gun deaths in America half are cops killing people -- take away the few guns cops have and we will reduce the gun deaths by half with only taking what 200,000 guns away from people???

second 1/4 of all gun deaths are from people killing themselves. Offer free suicide kits with painless drug death in them and you will keep 1/4 off all gun deaths from happening if the suicide people go for the suicide kits.

of the last 1/4 of gun deaths about 80 percent are done by ex-lovers -- wives,husbands,ex-boyfriends,ex-girlfriends, etc. If you had to get a professional emotional test to see if you would not go nuts if your intended partner would leave you and if before you could break up a couple they had to go through grief consultation.

There solved most of the gun deaths and only took guns away from those who use them to kill people.

Problem solved.

Where is all the liberal outrage here? ------- The liberals calling for a boycott of NBC.

I guess it is just  - Our gun shows good.... Conservative gun shows bad.

My god can you imagine the outrage if Fox was sponsoring this gun show.

The best way to prevent TV and radio people from airing such shows is to simply stop watching them. In other words boycott their as*.

The funniest thing that no one eludes to is the fact that all mass shooting have been committed with firearms that are accessible to everyone at the time.  The most heavily regulated guns that require high level permits are never the ones used.  It's easier to get hold of a semi-auto than it is to aquire an actual full auto or burst firing military weapon.

All of these so called Wanting to protect our children liberals who also seem to know what all of us need, and believe that the Government should take care of everyone from cradle to grave somehow forget that life begins at conception. They have no problem with the killing of unborn babies, Oh, excuse me I forgot, this type of killing has been legalized by this Government.

The F N Liberal Democrats never let a tradagy (sp) go wasted as for their Propaganda !!!! The American people will cool down and hear both sides of this and not just th "we gotta do something even if it wont work side " They refuse to think seriously about the mental health side , because of privacy issues and the fact that hardly and Dems would be allowed guns if it were revealed , AND WHAT ABOUT PUTTING CRIMINALS AWAY FOR 10-15 YRS FOR USING A GUN IN ANY CRIME ??? TOO MANY MINORITIES WOULD GO I GUESS !!!!

Good for NBC!!  If guns are a problem, they better start banning cars, baseball bats, knives, etc.  Drunk drivers kill four times as many people as guns.  When are going to start blaming General Motors and Budweiser for all those deaths?!  Idiot liberals...

NBC's modest sponsorship participation makes perfect sense, and is in line with mainstream positions regarding gun violence.  Gun ownership and basic second amendment rights should never be on the table, and the owning of APPROPRIATE guns for sportsmen (FOLLOWING CHECKS) should never be questioned.  NBC has a stake in outdoor sport broadcasting and therefore has every reason in the world to participate in this event without crossing the hazy line between gun control nuts and gun freedom nuts.

Knock the ratings on the network.  This outright ignorance....longtime sponsor or nor.  Have some respect for the dead and slaughtered children and young adults.

The same holds true for Chic-Filet this coming weekend.  I understand there is a 3500 man march between two locations in the Pittsburgh area.   Chic-Filet is another azzhole money money, so-called we support religion garbage group of inconsiderates.

I can imagine the fireworks that will result from this!

The vast majority of gun related crimes are committed by criminals with illegally own guns. 5x more people are killed by cars than by  guns. Of the 8,000+ gun related homicides , the vast majority are related to criminals and drug users not to legal gun owners. Why don't your tree humping pathetic libtards find another cause? Like saving innocent unborn children.

I wonder if they'll be honest enough to report that there is no such thing as a "gun show loophole".
