2 popular canned tuna brands get recalled

Bumble Bee and Chicken of the Sea pull some 5-ounce cans due to concerns about spoilage.

File photo of Bumble Bee Tuna cans (Chris Weeks/WireImage for Silver Spoon)Bumble Bee Foods and the producer of Chicken of the Sea tuna have announced a recall of some 5-ounce cans of tuna, but it's not the fish that's the problem.

What has the companies worried is that the seals on the cans aren't tight enough. The seals could be so loose that they let in air and outside contaminants, which could spoil the tuna.

The two companies issued nearly identical announcements saying the seams on the lids of the cans "do not meet the standard for seam quality."

So far, it doesn't seem like anyone has become ill. If you have one of these cans, throw it out and contact Bumble Bee by calling 800-800-8572 or the producer of Chicken of the Sea by calling 800-597-5898.

Here are the affected cans:
  • Brunswick brand chunk light tuna in water.
  • Bumble Bee brand chunk light tuna in water.
  • Bumble Bee brand chunk light tuna in vegetable oil.
  • Bumble Bee brand chunk white albacore tuna in water.
  • Chicken of the Sea brand chunk white albacore tuna in water.
You can see the specific label UPC codes and can lot codes on this website and on this website. The Bumble Bee and Brunswick products were sold between Jan. 17 and Feb. 28 of this year, while the Chicken of the Sea cans were sold between Feb. 4 and Feb. 27 of this year.

Dialed the number above you are told to dial 888.820.1947  Where you hear a tape" We are concerned and nest person will get to you shortly" after 3 minutes of this the tape changes to press "9"  to leave message. After 6 more minutes you hear the fax machine tones then they hang up.

I know they are probably overwhelmed but come on, it makes you look really suspicious.

if it's a recall, shouldn't they issue refunds?

Back when I was in QC we never let anything go out to the public before it was authorized and tested. Today we live in the world where the corporists have gotten so deep into our government its ship it and let th chips fall where they may. One meat recall came out in august for beef they sold feb through may. How much of that was still out there.

Throw it out ?? I bought 6 cans recently so I should just give away over 7 dollars with tax?? Great gig ...sell stuff... then tell your customer to throw it out ... can  I get into this type of business??
I had some Tuna not too long ago and I haven't been glowing in the dark as suggested by some below, and I didn't get sick either.  I did print out the listing so we can check our labels.  Hooray for date codes!!!!

I didn't realize they had a 'chunk white".  I know what they label as 'solid white' IS chunky, not really solid like it used to be.  Now that I know it available in unreliable cans I will be sure to not look for it.

At least these people are not trying to kill anyone, unlike the FDA and the legal drug lords who package and sell death daily.  These people are asking those with this tuna to throw it away and call them.  Try taking legal drug lord dope back to their distributor after you've paid for it!!!!  Now, before some start yelling I am off topic, I don't think I am.  This is tuna that could be bad not because the tuna is bad but the can.  That ties in with the legal drug lords not being as honest. But, here is the important part! READ the story about the 106 year old man in Massachusetts who just receieved an honorary high school diploma!  106 years old...now read these lines in that article..  ".....Despite the type of physical work he did, he never suffered physical ailments. He never took any medication. He drove until he was 100.”  Had he taken meds, he might have lived to be 70.

OMG - A couple months ago, I sent Chicken of the Sea a long letter asking for an explanation on why my 3 cats turned up their noses when I served themCkn/Sea white albacore tuna in water as a treat. My cats usually LOVE Chicken of the Sea albacore tuna and one of them never, ever turns food down as is evident by his 22 lb weight. But not one of them would eat this. I was totally dumbfounded. I ended up throwing out 9 cans of it and I wanted a response from Ckn/Sea as to what my cats knew that compelled them to avoid that tuna. I also wanted reimbursement for the 9 cans of tuna. I got a "canned" response letter back from them explaining that white albacore tuna isn't always white in color and 3 coupons for new tuna. And again, I was totally dumbfounded. Chicken of the Sea just blew off my concern and didn't even try to address the issue. If they had taken my concern seriously they might have found the problem sooner, avoided a recall, and maybe Poet57 wouldn't be sick.

I wonder where those fish were caught?  I wouldn't put it past them to hide highly radioactively contaminated fish with a loose lid warning.  It's been a while now since the nuclear accident in Japan.  I imagine all that radioactive material they dumped into the ocean is working it's way up through the food chain.  Does anyone have a geiger counter?

At least its not horsemeat! Change.Org Petition to Overturn the Legalization of Horse Slaughter for Human Consumption in the United States. and sign the wild burro one too! Send Obama an email at whitehouse.gov and let him know we dont want this slaughter issue in our country  and while hes at it he can just ban in to export as well. We definitely dont want to go through what other countries have been exposed to!

You mean I have to do the finger test with my tuna too?

It's common knowledge that the best tuna is reserved for the Japanese while the worst, crap, Fukushima irradiated tuna crud is left for the Americans.

Why is this? Because the Japanese people (we are told), will just go absolutely, positively nuts without their tuna. The fact of the matter is that China isn't the only country that routinely gets the shaft from Japan.

The situation is so bad that Americans are routinely fed tuna that isn't even tuna at all but something barely even fish -- just "fish like". Why? Because Americans are considered so born-at-birth stupid and are kept that way in a culture that practically invented bait and switch, in the land of suckers ruled by greed and avarice, run by crooks and thieves.

When I shake a (12oz can) of Bumble Bee (chunk white albacore) I hear liquid freely swishing around. Is that normal?

People are still eating tuna fi**** gone up about 500% since Chavez, er, el presidente' took over. Completely uut of our ability to pay. We're eating mayflies in Michigan instead. Lots of those, only they haven't arrived yet. Just hope they don't find a way to regulate and tax them like everything else.
