Retailers start to pull some rifles from shelves

Dick's Sporting Goods and Wal-Mart suspend some gun sales after last week's shooting in Connecticut.

Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS) has suspended sales of its modern rifles nationwide. It's also taken all of the guns off the shelves at its store near Newtown, Conn., where a 20-year-old gunman opened fire at an elementary school last week, killing 20 children and six educators.

The company said it took those actions out of respect for the victims and their families in this time of national mourning.

The gunman, Adam Lanza, used one of the Bushmaster AR-15 guns in his deadly rampage. A semi-automatic version of the weapon is popular for civilian sporting use, The Dallas Morning News reports. The large retailers selling assault weapons include Dick's, Cabela's (CAB) and Wal-Mart (WMT).

Wal-Mart has stopped showing the Bushmaster Patrolman's Carbine M4A3 rifle on its website as well, according to The Nation. There is no word whether Wal-Mart will stop selling the weapon at its stores, however. But Wal-Mart's site still shows that it's selling other guns at its stores, including the Sig Sauer M400.

Cabela's meanwhile, has stocked up on guns and ammunition heading into the fourth quarter -- largely a bet on surging gun sales after the presidential election. Here's what CEO Thomas Millner said in October, according to the Atlanta Business Chronicle:

"At least coming in to the fourth quarter, we’ve taken a pretty aggressive position in inventory commitment to both guns and ammunition. So that’s a starting point. Clearly, if the president’s re-elected, I would expect some surge beyond the current levels, which are really good. And if Gov. Romney is elected ... I still think we’re gonna see gun growth next year. It probably won’t be at the same pace. ... So it’s probably a difference of degrees as we sit here today, but we’re doing a lot of stuff in our stores to make sure we are the easiest, fastest place to shop for your firearms purchases."

WOW!!!!! Couldnt Say this anybetter. The name on the writer was "Shinelight".

As a Christian, I sadly agree that the Church has not been doing its job in our society. We have been too busy living the American life and chasing after the same vain things that the rest of this dying world has been pursuing. This self-serving lukewarm attitude has neglected our responsibility not only to tell, but to also to demonstrate the reality of the love of God and the power of the resurrection of Jesus Christ who has made eternal life a reality for all who choose to believe and follow Him. That said, I do believe that America's problem is a spiritual one.

In our soul-searching over this tremendous loss in Connecticut, may we truly be willing to look at what has happened to our nation, once founded upon Judeo-Christian principles. Gun violence is merely a symptom of a far worse sickness that is afflicting us as a people. We live in a society that has determined that there should be no such thing as God-given truth. We have elevated a philosophy that everyone can do what is right in their own eyes and things will continue to go along well, and even get better. How could we ever have duped ourselves into thinking that the God of the Bible is no longer needed for us to function as a healthy society?

Since the 1960’s, we have pushed God out of our schools, out of our government, out of our stores, out of our public squares, out of our press, out of our marriages and out of our families. We have even pushed Him out of some of our churches. We have twisted the original intention of the separation of Church and State and purged His ways from being our guide for living. We have set ourselves on a mission to silence the God of the Bible, as we pursue our pleasures and vain pursuits of life. Our entertainment industry is now driven by sexual immorality and extreme violence and we flock to watch it, intoxicated by perversion. We are rapidly losing sight of what a healthy family looks like anymore. We try to remedy this by creating redefinitions of what a family is. Then we somehow are surprised when the offspring of our redefinitions turn on us in revenge. While shocked by the loss of these precious school children this past week, there seems to be little concern over the 3,000,000 innocent unborn children whose lives we passively allow to be snuffed out every year by our abortion industry. Since 1973, we now are missing 1/8 of our nation’s population due to our self-serving use of abortion, and yet, we shamelessly continue to push forward in this, even supporting the use of tax dollars to take more innocent lives. Because we, as a nation, have refused to stop this genocide, we now have the blood of all of these innocent ones on our hands!

Mere gun control is not the answer to cure the woes of America. We are sick and dying in spirit, soul and body. We must end our hostility toward the only One who has our remedy. We must admit that we are the problem. We have created the culture that is now breaking down. It is not God's fault. We have chosen to ignore His ways. Our condition is critical and it is high time for us to turn back to Him and His Truth. He, alone, offers what we truly need to heal our land.

FIRST WE TOOK PRAYER AWAY FROM OUR SCHOOL. THEN WE LET THE LIBERALS TAKE AWAY CORPORAL PUNISHMENT FROM SCHOOL AND NOW YOU WANT TO TO TAKE OUR 2ND AMENDMENT RIGHT.!! NO, WHAT WE REAL NEED IS TO PUNISH THE MURDERS, MOLESTER AND RAPEST THE WAY IT WOULD MEAN SOMETHING NOT JUST A SLAP ON THE HAND DECLARE THEM UNFIT AND PUT THE AWAY FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS. IF A PERSON COMMITS ONE OF THE ABOVE MENTIONED CRIMES  DON'T GIVE THEM A TRAIL JUST EXECUTE THEM THAT WOULD CUT DOWN OUR JAIL POPULATION AND AT THE SAME TIME SEND A MESSAGE OUT THAT WE (LAW ABIDING CITIZENS) MEAN BUSINESS. OUR PUNISHMENT DOESN'T FIT THE CRIME. WE ARE MORE WORRIED ABOUT THE CRIMINALS RIGHTS THEN THE RIGHTS OF THE OF THE VICTIMS. GUN DON'T KILL CHILDREN PEOPLE AND IDIOTS KILL PEOPLE

Pulling them from the shelves all right. This might be good PR but does anybody think they are going to destroy them? No, they will end up somewhere at a much higher price than when they were on the shelf there. I was in my local shop this morning to get a can of powder to reload with, and the shelves were almost bare. People that don't have a semi auto right now are in a panic, many willing to pay whatever it takes.

Look beyond this tragedy and know that the government will continue to have military weapons developed and produced, thus they will be available and it will be because the federal government wants new more advanced weapons of mass destruction. Who is going to pay for this development and production? Why you are American tax-paying public. You will not be able to escape the gun development and production model that is dictated by Washington. Look beyond this tragedy and buy firearms stock because the U.S. government is going to continue to place orders for new weapons of mass destruction. You might as well know that the U.S. government is going to continue creating dirty little wars for various reasons. Those dirty little wars are where new and advanced weapons of mass destruction are tested. Until there is no war there will be no development and production of weapons of mass destruction. Read and understand your history to see what I say is true. Just saying and just informing.

Timothy McVeigh killed 168 people and injured 500 others.... What was his gun of choice??? He did not use a gun. If someone is going to go on a rampage and kill people they will find a way to do so. They do not need guns to do this. Banning assault rifles or any guns is not the answer.

It makes me think why a woman who was trying to get help for her son would want to have thse guns in the house. I am not against gun's. im just against people who cant handle guns ..and no , people dont need an automatic riflle for hunting or any other sport other then mass killings of whatever it may be including humans

Look at the highjackers on 9-11-01 these terrorist used no guns. 19 highjackers killed almost 3000 people that is about 150 kills per terrorist. Do you feel flying has become safer?

Nobody has to give up their guns but don't we already have enough out there! I'll be shopping for my sporting goods at Dick's Sporting Goods. Thank you for truly respecting the lives lost and not the almighty dollar!

Guns really should be the least of our worries. What will get us is the biological warfare with a 66% kill ratio. Our taxpayer dollars already funded that weapon and that barely made news. Who will we blame for those deaths? The chemicals, our government, or the overseas scientist that were paid the produce it. If we can pay to have it developed then other countries that hate us will pay to have it developed as well. All they'll need then is a person that doesn't value their life or any other life and then you'll see a real mass killing. When people don't value their own life or any other then their capable of anything with or without a gun.

Way back in the Great Depression we had a very thoughtful and clever American Icon. Will Rogers. he has been quoted and is still quoted, " Just be thankful we do not get all of the government we pay for" and that was back a few generations ago.

Gun control is not the problem, you can't fire a gun with out bullets. quit making bullets, gun powder, brass.  After all it is not the gun that does the damage it is the bullet.

I thought Republicans supported the ability for a company to make its own decision. Why are they suddenly against this? Are they anti-capitalist?

"BillyJack55" I don't thinks it would solve the problem to euthanize the mentally ill but I bet sterilizing those unfit to reproduce might just do the trick.

Do any of you folks remember what brought this conversation to the forefront???????

Does any one remember how many people died at that school last week?  How many were children? Do you remember?  Can U provide one good argument that will make the parents feel better about assult rifles.

U don't hunt with assault rifles; U can defend yer house without multi round clips (get a baseball bat); U wouldn't take a gun to work would u?

There are places in America where guns do not belong and there are people who should not have access to them.  That is what the conversation is supposed to be about.  No one wants to take you single action, good hunting rifle away.  We just want the AR-15's and other automatic weapons and multi round clips to be off the market at Dick's and Cabelas and Walmart.

Why can't people understand that bad people will find some way to murder innocent people without guns? Evil people will be evil, with or without guns. In Medieval times, there was plenty of killing, and there obviously weren't any guns. Guns, just like many things, can be useful and helpful if used in the confines of God. "Thou shalt not murder" That means with guns, knives, poison, or any other invention man comes up with.

Numerous Australians have warned us in America that

the UN pushed to confiscate all guns in Australia as they

have in other countries.

They warn us not to allow this to happen in the U.S.

as they are all in great danger...not enough police and

criminals are running rampant killing and breaking into homes!!!

Hillary Clinton walked a UN Weapons ban treaty into Congress

for ratification this summer and it  was voted down.

She went back to the UN and they created a new UN Weapons Ban Treaty

that Hillary clearly stated she was taking directly to Obama and avoiding

Congress!!  She has undeniably committed an act of TREASON by walking

in such a document which clearly violates the Constitution.

The horrible murders of those innocent children was to get attn at Christmas

which would make great impact...in order to confiscate guns in America...

Mr. Lanza had NOTHING to do with those murders it was much higher up...

He was not capable to do all those murders

He is introverted and shy!!!

BUT CIA frequently do it without any conscience

as they are high paid assassins that the American taxpayer pays for and

that is the truth!!!!!!!!!!!!
