Retailers start to pull some rifles from shelves
Dick's Sporting Goods and Wal-Mart suspend some gun sales after last week's shooting in Connecticut.
Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS) has suspended sales of its modern rifles nationwide. It's also taken all of the guns off the shelves at its store near Newtown, Conn., where a 20-year-old gunman opened fire at an elementary school last week, killing 20 children and six educators.
The company said it took those actions out of respect for the victims and their families in this time of national mourning.
The gunman, Adam Lanza, used one of the Bushmaster AR-15 guns in his deadly rampage. A semi-automatic version of the weapon is popular for civilian sporting use, The Dallas Morning News reports. The large retailers selling assault weapons include Dick's, Cabela's (CAB) and Wal-Mart (WMT).
Wal-Mart has stopped showing the Bushmaster Patrolman's Carbine M4A3 rifle on its website as well, according to The Nation. There is no word whether Wal-Mart will stop selling the weapon at its stores, however. But Wal-Mart's site still shows that it's selling other guns at its stores, including the Sig Sauer M400.
Cabela's meanwhile, has stocked up on guns and ammunition heading into the fourth quarter -- largely a bet on surging gun sales after the presidential election. Here's what CEO Thomas Millner said in October, according to the Atlanta Business Chronicle:
"At least coming in to the fourth quarter, we’ve taken a pretty aggressive position in inventory commitment to both guns and ammunition. So that’s a starting point. Clearly, if the president’s re-elected, I would expect some surge beyond the current levels, which are really good. And if Gov. Romney is elected ... I still think we’re gonna see gun growth next year. It probably won’t be at the same pace. ... So it’s probably a difference of degrees as we sit here today, but we’re doing a lot of stuff in our stores to make sure we are the easiest, fastest place to shop for your firearms purchases."

As a Christian, I sadly agree that the Church has not been doing its job in our society. We have been too busy living the American life and chasing after the same vain things that the rest of this dying world has been pursuing. This self-serving lukewarm attitude has neglected our responsibility not only to tell, but to also to demonstrate the reality of the love of God and the power of the resurrection of Jesus Christ who has made eternal life a reality for all who choose to believe and follow Him. That said, I do believe that America's problem is a spiritual one.
In our soul-searching over this tremendous loss in Connecticut, may we truly be willing to look at what has happened to our nation, once founded upon Judeo-Christian principles. Gun violence is merely a symptom of a far worse sickness that is afflicting us as a people. We live in a society that has determined that there should be no such thing as God-given truth. We have elevated a philosophy that everyone can do what is right in their own eyes and things will continue to go along well, and even get better. How could we ever have duped ourselves into thinking that the God of the Bible is no longer needed for us to function as a healthy society?
Since the 1960’s, we have pushed God out of our schools, out of our government, out of our stores, out of our public squares, out of our press, out of our marriages and out of our families. We have even pushed Him out of some of our churches. We have twisted the original intention of the separation of Church and State and purged His ways from being our guide for living. We have set ourselves on a mission to silence the God of the Bible, as we pursue our pleasures and vain pursuits of life. Our entertainment industry is now driven by sexual immorality and extreme violence and we flock to watch it, intoxicated by perversion. We are rapidly losing sight of what a healthy family looks like anymore. We try to remedy this by creating redefinitions of what a family is. Then we somehow are surprised when the offspring of our redefinitions turn on us in revenge. While shocked by the loss of these precious school children this past week, there seems to be little concern over the 3,000,000 innocent unborn children whose lives we passively allow to be snuffed out every year by our abortion industry. Since 1973, we now are missing 1/8 of our nation’s population due to our self-serving use of abortion, and yet, we shamelessly continue to push forward in this, even supporting the use of tax dollars to take more innocent lives. Because we, as a nation, have refused to stop this genocide, we now have the blood of all of these innocent ones on our hands!
Mere gun control is not the answer to cure the woes of America. We are sick and dying in spirit, soul and body. We must end our hostility toward the only One who has our remedy. We must admit that we are the problem. We have created the culture that is now breaking down. It is not God's fault. We have chosen to ignore His ways. Our condition is critical and it is high time for us to turn back to Him and His Truth. He, alone, offers what we truly need to heal our land.
Way back in the Great Depression we had a very thoughtful and clever American Icon. Will Rogers. he has been quoted and is still quoted, " Just be thankful we do not get all of the government we pay for" and that was back a few generations ago.
Gun control is not the problem, you can't fire a gun with out bullets. quit making bullets, gun powder, brass. After all it is not the gun that does the damage it is the bullet.
"BillyJack55" I don't thinks it would solve the problem to euthanize the mentally ill but I bet sterilizing those unfit to reproduce might just do the trick.
Do any of you folks remember what brought this conversation to the forefront???????
Does any one remember how many people died at that school last week? How many were children? Do you remember? Can U provide one good argument that will make the parents feel better about assult rifles.
U don't hunt with assault rifles; U can defend yer house without multi round clips (get a baseball bat); U wouldn't take a gun to work would u?
There are places in America where guns do not belong and there are people who should not have access to them. That is what the conversation is supposed to be about. No one wants to take you single action, good hunting rifle away. We just want the AR-15's and other automatic weapons and multi round clips to be off the market at Dick's and Cabelas and Walmart.
Numerous Australians have warned us in America that
the UN pushed to confiscate all guns in Australia as they
have in other countries.
They warn us not to allow this to happen in the U.S.
as they are all in great danger...not enough police and
criminals are running rampant killing and breaking into homes!!!
Hillary Clinton walked a UN Weapons ban treaty into Congress
for ratification this summer and it was voted down.
She went back to the UN and they created a new UN Weapons Ban Treaty
that Hillary clearly stated she was taking directly to Obama and avoiding
Congress!! She has undeniably committed an act of TREASON by walking
in such a document which clearly violates the Constitution.
The horrible murders of those innocent children was to get attn at Christmas
which would make great impact...in order to confiscate guns in America...
Mr. Lanza had NOTHING to do with those murders it was much higher up...
He was not capable to do all those murders
He is introverted and shy!!!
BUT CIA frequently do it without any conscience
as they are high paid assassins that the American taxpayer pays for and
that is the truth!!!!!!!!!!!!

Equities climbed steadily since the opening bell as investors prepared for tomorrow's policy decision from the Federal Reserve. Although chatter in recent weeks has included speculation the Fed would look to taper its asset purchases, today's broad gains suggest investors expect mostly reassuring words from Chairman Bernanke at tomorrow's press conference.
