Retailers start to pull some rifles from shelves

Dick's Sporting Goods and Wal-Mart suspend some gun sales after last week's shooting in Connecticut.

Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS) has suspended sales of its modern rifles nationwide. It's also taken all of the guns off the shelves at its store near Newtown, Conn., where a 20-year-old gunman opened fire at an elementary school last week, killing 20 children and six educators.

The company said it took those actions out of respect for the victims and their families in this time of national mourning.

The gunman, Adam Lanza, used one of the Bushmaster AR-15 guns in his deadly rampage. A semi-automatic version of the weapon is popular for civilian sporting use, The Dallas Morning News reports. The large retailers selling assault weapons include Dick's, Cabela's (CAB) and Wal-Mart (WMT).

Wal-Mart has stopped showing the Bushmaster Patrolman's Carbine M4A3 rifle on its website as well, according to The Nation. There is no word whether Wal-Mart will stop selling the weapon at its stores, however. But Wal-Mart's site still shows that it's selling other guns at its stores, including the Sig Sauer M400.

Cabela's meanwhile, has stocked up on guns and ammunition heading into the fourth quarter -- largely a bet on surging gun sales after the presidential election. Here's what CEO Thomas Millner said in October, according to the Atlanta Business Chronicle:

"At least coming in to the fourth quarter, we’ve taken a pretty aggressive position in inventory commitment to both guns and ammunition. So that’s a starting point. Clearly, if the president’s re-elected, I would expect some surge beyond the current levels, which are really good. And if Gov. Romney is elected ... I still think we’re gonna see gun growth next year. It probably won’t be at the same pace. ... So it’s probably a difference of degrees as we sit here today, but we’re doing a lot of stuff in our stores to make sure we are the easiest, fastest place to shop for your firearms purchases."

From the article "The gunman, Adam Lanza, used one of the Bushmaster AR-15 guns in his deadly rampage. A semi-automatic version of the weapon is popular for civilian sporting use,"

The Bushmaster AR-15 quoted above IS IN FACT a semi-automatic weapon. The press once again shows its ignorance of the facts and / or pursues a political agenda.

So is Texas gonna give up all their guns??????What about all the rednecks?

Whats even more bogus is the fact Connecticut has some of the strictest gun laws. This kid didn't get these guns legally through a dealer. He stole them. Hell, theres more people maimed and killed by autos each year than guns. Gonna put a ban on certain cars and trucks????

Manufacturers and retailers of guns are going to start becoming liable for these events. Some day someone will win a billion dollar lawsuit against the Bushmaster's and Wal-Mart's and change the whole gun landscape, just like happened with cigarettes.  Dick's sees it coming.

How about Walmart stop filling prescriptions for Lexapro, Celexa, Wellbutrin, Zoloft and Paxil (Serotonin reuptake inhibitors) and investigate the 5000 the year criminal cases where the criminals have claimed that the medications side effects caused the sudden or strong feelings, such as feeling nervous, angry, restless, violent, or scared. Let the doctor know if you, side effects are more common is you have a bipolar disorder (manic-depressive) or have tried to commit suicide.

Walmart should also stop selling games like Call of Duty, Halo and Grand Theft Auto to minors!!!

Good for's my one stop outdoor shop and they won't cower to those who don't believe in our freedoms.  They didn't pull guns and they still have 30 cap mags in stock while everyone else has either sold them out or wimped out to the Liberal enemies of our country...

No BGSS it's called personal responsibility.  You are sounding a little judgemental.  Who are you refering to when you say the loudest voices?  Do you talk to all these people on a daily basis?  Have you interviewed your entire town?  You are making statements based on what you think your god is telling you.  Can I ask you another question?  What exactly does god's voice sound like when he talks to you?

Its not guns that are the problem. Its the innate evilness of human nature that's at fault.

To all of you who want to be like the British and their old colonies listen to this:  You will lose your freedom to defend yourself.  Defending yourself today by any defensive tool  in those countries may result in your being prosecuted.  Please folks do not let the acts of madmen result in the lose of our right to bear arms.  Ref:  Google:  Right to defend yourself: Ireland has changed law, so why can't Britain?

The initial reports by the Conn. state police was that the bushmaster was found in the trunk of his mothers car. Not on him in the school or used. He entered the school with a sig and a glock. If you want to use this tragic crime as basis for new gun laws atleast get the facts streight.

Did anyone see that aid for the Sandy victims passed through congress. After all the crap we've put up with for the last10 or so years, the congress passes aid to the victims of Sandy along with a long list of pork that had nothing to do with Sandy. This was something Obama was going to stop. I can't think of a better reason to have our guns than to protect ourselves from a renegade gov. like ours. At least that's the way it's headed. A gov. that's broke and still adding pork like nothing ever happened. They all make me sick.

It seems most Americans and everyone in this comment string is against more gun control knowing it is useless, but, for more education. Do you think the majority will rule here? Do you think this will matter at all? or do you feel we as citizens have any more say at all? This is the real problem, We will be called crazy by the minority and the press that no longer is balanced or impartial. We will feel no longer represented, That is dangerous, That is scary, That my fellow brothers and sisters of America is what will happen, goodbye freedom we will miss you.

If you are unable to look at the possibility of reducing gun deaths in this country after the death of twenty babies then there is nothing that will change your mind. We need to ignore your position and move on. Crawl back under the extremist rock you came from and leave the rest of us to deal with this horrific issue.
