Retailers start to pull some rifles from shelves
Dick's Sporting Goods and Wal-Mart suspend some gun sales after last week's shooting in Connecticut.
While politicians go back and forth about the future of gun control, some retailers are already making a statement and pulling assault weapons from their stores.Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS) has suspended sales of its modern rifles nationwide. It's also taken all of the guns off the shelves at its store near Newtown, Conn., where a 20-year-old gunman opened fire at an elementary school last week, killing 20 children and six educators.
The company said it took those actions out of respect for the victims and their families in this time of national mourning.
The gunman, Adam Lanza, used one of the Bushmaster AR-15 guns in his deadly rampage. A semi-automatic version of the weapon is popular for civilian sporting use, The Dallas Morning News reports. The large retailers selling assault weapons include Dick's, Cabela's (CAB) and Wal-Mart (WMT).
Wal-Mart has stopped showing the Bushmaster Patrolman's Carbine M4A3 rifle on its website as well, according to The Nation. There is no word whether Wal-Mart will stop selling the weapon at its stores, however. But Wal-Mart's site still shows that it's selling other guns at its stores, including the Sig Sauer M400.
Cabela's meanwhile, has stocked up on guns and ammunition heading into the fourth quarter -- largely a bet on surging gun sales after the presidential election. Here's what CEO Thomas Millner said in October, according to the Atlanta Business Chronicle:
"At least coming in to the fourth quarter, we’ve taken a pretty aggressive position in inventory commitment to both guns and ammunition. So that’s a starting point. Clearly, if the president’s re-elected, I would expect some surge beyond the current levels, which are really good. And if Gov. Romney is elected ... I still think we’re gonna see gun growth next year. It probably won’t be at the same pace. ... So it’s probably a difference of degrees as we sit here today, but we’re doing a lot of stuff in our stores to make sure we are the easiest, fastest place to shop for your firearms purchases."

They have a name for someone not able to or willing to stand up to EVIL... it’s called a VICTIM… If anything was made clear with these events… it’s that the Government and the Police CAN NOT PROTECT the citizens of this country… OBAMA FAIL
OBAMA LEAD BY EXAMPLE... You give up your armed bodyguards with HIGH CAPACITY MAGAZINES, your rolling SUV TANK CARS... your sophisticated protection systems... Same thing HARRY REID, CHUCKY SCHUMER, DIANE FEINSTIEN... Your all such 2 faced BAFOONS... USE THE CRAPPY medical system you want for us, the pop guns you want the masses to have...
LEAD BY EXAMPLE or just why not shut your collective pieholes... Show us TRICKLEDOWN LEADERSHIP!
You liberals have more dead children on your hands with this wholesale abortion... You grow up... Show that human life has meaning... Your LIBERAL LANZA SHOOTER was not an NRA member he was a Liberal Communist Socialist...
Liberal Utopianism is a stupid pot induced dream... We can't stop coke from getting in the country, we can’t stop illegals either, the need for high capacity weapons will just flow from the drug and newly formed gun cartels... great plan... One more dumb liberal platitude
It's nice to see and hear some retailers are taking actions to prevent another potential shooting. THESE ACTIONS ARE WORKING TOWARD PREVENTION...It won't stop all murders, but it is a step in the right direction.
There is no reason to own certain types of clips, ammo and guns!
For those gun enthusiast who blame the shooters for not being sane...well, many of these recent killing sprees didn't stem from people with a past history of violence. People sometimes snap and don't know how to handle situations.
My dad bought a gun 'for protection,' he barely knows how to use it. He used it to threaten to kill my mom and his own children when he would get upset.
On top of that, my dad's house was broken into and his gun was stolen (now in another wrong hand).
My X-boyfriend is LAPD, I woke up with a gun in my face...he was 'sleep-walking.'
It's not just having guns in the wrong hands, but accidents from firearms too!
My X-boyfriend's dad, accidentally shot off the gun in the house....by the way none of these events where ever reported (but, the evidence is still in the wall)!
So...why allow access to weapons?
TYPO CORRECTED VERSION--SORRY
None of the weapons specified are "assault weapons" by LEGAL definition. They LOOK like assault weapons but lack the functionality which defines what an ASSAULT WEAPON is. Specifically, the lack a mode of fire selector switch which allows semi-automatic or automatic functions. Some like the US Army's M4s also have a "burst mode". If you are going to report on the subject have the decency to learn what you are talking about.
Strange how Americans are narrow minded. The second amandment was set in the constitution more than 200 years ago when people lived in another and different culture! Where they REALLY had to DEFEND themself and their family.
Are you the american´s living in the same crazy world as was then?
If you really believe that then you are a nutcase!!
In US there are more than 12.000 murders by guns, each year and you look the other way. It takes more than 1.000, more than 2.000 people to kill almost 12.000 people each year.
And you blame it on the mental illness. How ignorant you think and behave!!!!
It´s your society, your culture, I hate to say this= your stupid system in whole.
Children do not get good care enough. Yet you cry out loud how proud you are of your children.
Are you proud when they shoot another person? Or harm her in any other way?
Look into your eyes, your own society and stop being so childish to think that your children are mental case if it does any harm to another person. Maybe it is just you. Think about it before judging and prejudge another.
Guess we won't have to wait for repeal of the Second Amendment. These towers of jello are already ahead of the game...so concerned that they will be looked at as part of the problem. Grow a pair guys, will ya.
I find it an interesting phenomenon in this country that violence committed with a firearm is considered more heinous than violence committed with any other type of weapon. Gun related violence is the only crime in this country to which the weapon used is considered to be the cause of the violence...that getting rid of the weapon will somehow get rid of violent behavior. When someone is knifed in a parking garage, it's not labeled as 'knife violence'. When someone is bludgeoned to death with a baseball bat, it's not labeled as 'Louisville Slugger violence'. When someone is strangled to death, it's not labled 'rope violence'. The media do this not because they are against violence...they are against guns. They wish to forward their own political agenda instead of looking at the real cause of this type of violence; mental illness. Taking care of the real problem is too long, ponderous and not sensational enough for ratings. Gun control is chic and fashionable and will give the appearance of addressing the problem.
Where are the violent video game people on this matter?
Everyone of these 'little darlings' played these violent video games.
Before we say farewell to the second amendment that has served this country well for more than 200 years maybe we ought to ask questions of this BILLION dollar industry!
Oh I get it. They contributed to the temporary occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania avenue's reelection campaign. So they are like Caesar's wife...above reproach.
These Big box stores probably supprt Gay marriage as well! There have been at least two inccidents in my home town where a robbery was afferted by the victim having a hand gun and pulled it on the criminal and scarded him off without firing a shot! Also I've ran off several potential thiefs and scared the crap out of one without firing a shot! If i'd called the police I'd have been robbed and probably would not get my stuff back because by the time they get here the theif will be long gone unless your lucky enough to get a tag then they may still get off with our crooked Good Ol boy justice in this town!
I feel like this basically its English, no gay marriage, and I'll keep my guns! If you don't like it move somewhere that tolerates Gays, multiple languages, and does not permit citizen to own guns!! why not try Fantasy land!!!!
