Retailers start to pull some rifles from shelves

Dick's Sporting Goods and Wal-Mart suspend some gun sales after last week's shooting in Connecticut.

Caption: Steve Swartz, owner of Capitol City Arms Supply, shows off some of the rifles for sale in Springfield, Ill.,While politicians go back and forth about the future of gun control, some retailers are already making a statement and pulling assault weapons from their stores.

Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS) has suspended sales of its modern rifles nationwide. It's also taken all of the guns off the shelves at its store near Newtown, Conn., where a 20-year-old gunman opened fire at an elementary school last week, killing 20 children and six educators.

The company said it took those actions out of respect for the victims and their families in this time of national mourning.

The gunman, Adam Lanza, used one of the Bushmaster AR-15 guns in his deadly rampage. A semi-automatic version of the weapon is popular for civilian sporting use, The Dallas Morning News reports. The large retailers selling assault weapons include Dick's, Cabela's (CAB) and Wal-Mart (WMT).

Wal-Mart has stopped showing the Bushmaster Patrolman's Carbine M4A3 rifle on its website as well, according to The Nation. There is no word whether Wal-Mart will stop selling the weapon at its stores, however. But Wal-Mart's site still shows that it's selling other guns at its stores, including the Sig Sauer M400.

Cabela's meanwhile, has stocked up on guns and ammunition heading into the fourth quarter -- largely a bet on surging gun sales after the presidential election. Here's what CEO Thomas Millner said in October, according to the Atlanta Business Chronicle:

"At least coming in to the fourth quarter, we’ve taken a pretty aggressive position in inventory commitment to both guns and ammunition. So that’s a starting point. Clearly, if the president’s re-elected, I would expect some surge beyond the current levels, which are really good. And if Gov. Romney is elected ... I still think we’re gonna see gun growth next year. It probably won’t be at the same pace. ... So it’s probably a difference of degrees as we sit here today, but we’re doing a lot of stuff in our stores to make sure we are the easiest, fastest place to shop for your firearms purchases."

Not to diminish the tragedy of the events in CT, but we have over 300  million people in this country, and for the sake of one twisted individual and his questionably irresponsible mother, I can't understand why the populace actually thinks that new laws are good idea. Can someone please explain, adding all the mass shootings in the last 20 years, how those 2 dozen or so culprits should cause the type of blowback as to impinge on the existing rights of 300 million other people?

More people die from the negligence of others on the road due to cell phone use. Since there is a such a higher percentage of people who cause accidents in such a way as compared to these high volume homicides, should we also ban cell phone use in cars for ALL people? Because as some of you say...if ONE life could have been saved you're all for it...right?

I don't think there is a thought in anyone's mind about the safety of our children and other persons as far as violence against them goes.  To say that we would put material things ahead of human life is not something anyone should consider and I don't think people do that are sane.  We are again dealing with naive people that have an agenda to eliminate guns because of an extreme tragedy, knowing that the gun was not the problem.  It was the tool used by a person that had no right to have the gun, or axe, or car, or bomb or any other device that could have taken human life.  These killings have more to do with mentally incompetent, depressed and angered persons than guns.  The ban will not help or stop this type of behavior, it didn't at Columbine and it won't the next time someone decides to go on a rampage.  The problems stem from mental deficiency, persons depressed about their state of life, violent video games that cause young people to lose track of reality and a host of other society related things.  People by the thousands have lost their homes, cars, families due to divorce because of hard times and who knows what else.  The last 8-10 years have been hard on people, the economy continues to deteriorate, jobs continue to be lost, wages do not keep up with the cost to live.  These things play on people's minds and the weaker of these feel they have no place to turn.  Parents need to spend time with children and raise them, establish values and not just give them money to entertain themselves.  We need to put God back in our lives like our forefathers had at the inception of this great country.  And all of us need to realize that the world today is not a safe place, here or anywhere else.  Where were all of the adults at Sandy Hook when this tragedy started, hiding behind a desk or ????  Whether this young man had a gun or not, we cannot just sit by and let these kind of persons just slaughter us or blow us up or ?? without making some effort to stop them.  All of you that think the gun is so bad, stop and think that if just one adult in that school or the theater in Colorado had a CCW permit and had access to their own firearm,  maybe the shooter at the school would not have killed so many.  We can't just sit on our asses at times like this.  We have to take some initiative to try and help ourselves and banning guns or for that matter any other item that can be use to accomplish the same thing will not help.  Come on people, let's don't pass more feel good laws that have no teeth, get off your asses and help yourselves.  And another sad thing about this is, is that the talk of firearms bans and magazine capacity, has caused a buying frenzy on these items.  Many retailers will make a huge profit on these items because and only because the naive lawmakers and citizens that don't enjoy the shooting hobby have caused this.  Do you really thing that bans of these items will stop the next person from doing the same thing that Lanza did?  I don't think so,  get real.

Instead of making weapons for men they need to make food for them, yet this O-Abomination has done nothing but Arm other nations with weapons, billions, trillions now to the Muslim brotherhood,, even armed Mexico and their cartel and look how many children have died from that lie and deception. Now they want to control America like any other Islamic nation, by terror threats as we see coming daily. Terror against anyone who does not conform to this dictators wile. And now we are finding that he hired others to terrorize Romney and his family during this bought and paid for election deception. Facts speak for themselves and America, Disney land ride is going to crash, watch how many children die in this kings wake of destruction..
A LITTLE GUN HISTORY
In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control. >From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated
In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
Germany established gun control in 1938 and from 1939 to 1945, a total of 13 million Jews and others who were unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated.
China established gun control in 1935. From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated
Guatemala established gun control in 1964. From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
Uganda established gun control in 1970. From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From 1975 to 1977, one million educated people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
Defenseless people rounded up and exterminated in the 20th Century because of gun control: 56 million.
You won't see this data on the US evening news, or hear politicians disseminating this information.
Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws adversely affect only the law-abiding citizens.
Take note my fellow Americans, before it's too late!
The next time someone talks in favor of gun control, please remind them of this history lesson.
With guns, we are 'citizens'. Without them, we are 'subjects'.
During WWII the Japanese decided not to invade America because they knew most Americans were ARMED!
If you value your freedom, please spread this antigun-control message to all of your friends.
SWITZERLAND ISSUES EVERY HOUSEHOLD A GUN!
SWITZERLAND'S GOVERNMENT TRAINS EVERY ADULT THEY ISSUE A RIFLE.
SWITZERLAND HAS THE LOWEST GUN RELATED CRIME RATE OF ANY CIVILIZED COUNTRY IN THE WORLD!!!
IT'S A NO BRAINER!
DON'T LET OUR GOVERNMENT WASTE MILLIONS OF OUR TAX DOLLARS IN AN EFFORT TO MAKE ALL LAW ABIDING CITIZENS AN EASY TARGET.
Spread the word everywhere you can that you are a firm believer in the 2nd Amendment!

It's time to speak loud before they try to silence and disarm us.
You're not imagining it, history shows that governments always manipulate tragedies to attempt to disarm the people~

I was always afraid of guns. After some one came after me with a gun and i had no way to shoot back  I decided that the only thing scarier than guns was needing one and not having it. I now own a large collection.   Gun Control is NOT the problem ! Few if any of the people who have commit these Heinous Acts would have been detered by tighter gun laws. This is a Social Mental Imbalance problem that cannot be corrected by Disarming people of there ability to defend themself. Additionaly I think if more people Carried Guns fewer people would come A shootin Knowing that there Potential victims would shoot back.

Look at the Terrorists, if they cannot get a gun they will find a way to destroy what they think is evil. The Devil is a destroyer , that is what drives this kind of violence. No belief in God or proper Christian upbringing and look what happens. Gun Control will not solve this issue, bringing back God into our society will. Please , there is not much time left, all we have is each other! Bring back the honor, stop abortion, stop gay marrige and the legalization of drugs. I truely weep for this country which was once great. Taking guns away will just make it worse. Please Pray for our freedom!!!!!

There is no way to stop unlawful people from getting a firearm. If they want one, they will get it. Most likely from off the street. You & I both know that! There's not going to be an easy way out, but I expect congress to come up with the usual tit tat to keep themselves elected. OH! and this gives all the commentators on radio and TV ammo to talk about it. Down inside, do you think they really care about victums? The liberals want to advance their ajenda anyway they can!

Experts Agree: Gun Control Works

Experts like Chairman Mao, Adolph Hitler, Kim Jung il, Fidel Castro and Benito Mussolini all agree: gun control works just like it's supposed to.

The first thing dictators do to make it easy to enforce their agenda upon the peoples of their countries is to confiscate the weapons of the people. In order to prevent this from happening here in "America" and to protect the rest of the amendments in the "Constitution" the Fathers of our country created the "2nd Amendment". So, even if one hates weapons, it would be wise for one to protect the "2nd Amendment in order to preserve the freedoms they have here in the "Good Ole U.S.A." and the rest of the world wishes they still had because they didn't have our marvel of human history, the "Constitution".

Peace.

God forgive us, we have turned our backs to you. It's strange how people want to believe in God, but don't realize this killing is the work of the devil. This country has treated God like he should be setting in the back row. The further you get away from God, the closer the devil moves in. We need to get God in the front set and keep him their ! We are taking him out of our lives. When something like this happens, we' say WHY GOD, WHY ?   When we should be saying ( before it happens ), NO DEVIL< NO ! Bless All

Not selling guns in Conn. Is just stupid. Guns didn't kill these people, a mentally ill person did because the guns were in easy access. Treat the mental illness first, then educate people on gun safety and safes and trigger locks. This kid's Mom paid with her life. Let's address the elephant in the room. Where's the Dad? How much time did the Mom spend with her kid? What drugs was he taking, prescribed or otherwise? Who paid attention to the warning signs that this kid had problems? Our forefathers put our 2nd Amendment rights in place to insure we as citizens, could protect ourselves from tyranny and crime within our country. No one, including our government, has the right to remove or change our constitutional rights. You can have my weapons when you pry them from my cold dead hands. GOD BLESS AMERICA

why do we not focus on the government and the military arms and weapons they are selling all over the world and today. Most right into the hands of our enemies. How many billions now trillions of dollars of guns were sold in America, well in the last month, this criminal government just sold 600 billion dollars worth to our enemies and their Muslim brotherhood. So tell me people, why is our government Arming for WARS instead of feeding people, Why has our government become the biggest ARMs and weapons dealer in the world in the last five years. TWO faces do as I say not as I do criminal politicians and their contracted cronies. If we ban guns in America, lets ban this criminal government from selling them too.. WE THE PEOPLE have the power, NOT all these thefts and WAR dealers.

What we need to do is test everybody past the age of 10 and determine their mental state and put the defecient ones down before they can menace society. It's as good an answer as politicains wanting to take away brainless guns that sit for years and never harm a soul till that certain mentally defecient that slipped through the test takes it and slaughters a bunch of people preferably politicians.

Second Amendment - " A well-regulated militia being necessary....".  The gun proponents seem to miss this intro to the amendment.  Also, the Bill of Rights was passed  when the Nation was quite afraid of Pres. Madison's push to establish a national religion just a few years after our Revolution.  It was intended as a means of a "well-regulated militia".

One more time.  Guns do not kill people, and if you locked up all people and left the guns, no one would get shot.  take them off the shelf and the only people with guns are the bad guys, and we are left with no defense.

"fastest place to get a gun" would have been enough. And enough said.

Absolutely correct - This nut-nut wanted to go out with his name in headlines.  If he had no access to guns, he could have just-as-easily taken the keys to his mom's vehicle and run-down all the children in a school recess yard.  Limiting access to guns for law abiding common citizens is WRONG on all levels.   Having "No Gun Zone" schools just advertizes where to target for the next nut-nut.

This whole mess is about mental illness, not guns!!! If the NRA would get behind backing for mental health legislation we might just get somewhere. We need more services, more hospitals, rather than using our prison systems for the mentally ill. Get your gun wielding friends behind this cause and the gun issue will go away.

[BRIEFING.COM] The Russell 2000 crosssed the 1,000 level for the first time ever today and the S&P 500 established a new all-time, intraday high.  Those were some of the more memorable highlights of what was an otherwise nondescript day of trading.

By and large, there just wasn't a lot of conviction on the part of either buyers or sellers.  The major indices spent time on either side of the unchanged line, but never put a whole lot of distance between themselves and ... More
