Buy your own Air Force One for $50,000

The government is selling a plane that for decades transported presidents, first ladies, foreign dignitaries and members of Congress.

DC-9 aircraft and parts for sale on the GSA Auctions website (© U.S. General Services Administration)For just $50,000, you too can fly like a president.

The government is auctioning a DC-9 jetliner that has served as Air Force One. It's almost 40 years old and pretty run down, so you won't exactly be flying in luxury. But you will get a piece of history that still looks pretty great, at least from the outside.

The plane was part of the 89th Airlift Wing for 30 years, from 1975 to 2005, and flew presidents and vice presidents, according to bidding documentation from the U.S. General Services Administration. It also flew secretaries of state, members of Congress, foreign heads of state and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. And it comes with a recording of all conversations held on the aircraft. No, just kidding.

This isn't the large 747 that normally flies the president around. It isn't the official Air Force One, according to the government. But it was used by various presidents and most often by first ladies and members of Congress.

The 89th Airlift Wing operates the presidential fleet, writes Mark Knoller, a CBS News reporter on the White House beat. The smaller DC-9 planes are used to fly the president to airports that don't have the runway space to land a 747. President Barack Obama has used a DC-9 for weekend trips to Asheville, N.C., for example.

Interested bidders can check out the plane, but they'll have to go to the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport in Mesa, Ariz., to do so. The starting bid is $50,000, and the auction hasn't begun yet.

I wonder why it dosen`t go to the graveyard out west or put in a museum and charge $2.00 per
person to view. All proceeds go to reducing the national debt.

You would have to give it a good cleaning, Who knows what went on in that plane.

Make sure to run a drug dog through the plane immediately after purchase, so you don't get burned for the actions of others. I wonder how many interns have blown presidents on this plane?

Official Air Force One?  If the President flies in a military Piper Cub it is designated as Air Force One.

In the Reagan Library there is a timeline of AF1 and during the Nixon admn he actually took a United flight cuz he was in a hurry and that plane was for a time AF1 just cuz the POTUS was on it. Drove secret service nuts.

WOW --- only 50K for a old/used DC-9.  I don't know a thing about the price of used aircraft, but that sounds way, way, way too cheep.  I mean look at the price of any good mid-size car and above--- there more than 50K.  Scrap metal value alone should be more than 50K.

MARKET UPDATE

[BRIEFING.COM] The S&P 500 ran into a wall of resistance shortly after the top of the hour and dipped back to its lows of the morning (which weren't all that low).  The pullback was emblematic of today's session where there simply hasn't been much conviction.

The latter is raising a few eyebrows since there was enough good news this morning (eg., no escalation of geopolitical problems, M&A activity, ISM Index at highest level since March 2011) to power up the market, and yet ... More
