DirecTV to offer channel just for dogs
Beginning in August, the satellite provider will carry DogTV, which airs programs specifically developed to keep its canine viewers calm.
DogTV, which describes itself as "The First Television Channel For Dogs," will be carried on DirectTV (DTV) starting on August 1 for a monthly fee of $5.99, according to Advertising Age. The network is currently available online and as an on-demand channel for customers of Cox Communications in California.
"DogTV is the ideal babysitter for 'home alone' dogs," the Israel-based company says on its website. "Research shows that dogs feel better in the company of television, especially when the right content is on."
DogTV's content was developed in conjunction with animal behavior experts to keep its canine viewers calm. The channel notes that there is ample evidence that dogs do watch television and that there are scads of Google (GOOG) YouTube videos that prove that point.
Pet owners may not see immediate results: According to the its website, dogs may get "extra excited or unusually relaxed" before they get used to DogTV.
Of course, the channel will have advertisements, presumably aimed at humans.
Interestingly, founder Ron Levi told the BBC that he was inspired to create the channel because he felt guilty about leaving his cat "Charlie" alone for hours at a time.
"Eventually his production company decided to prioritize programming for dogs because they are pack animals and suffer most from separation anxiety," according to the BBC.
Besides, getting cats to agree on a television show would probably be like . . . herding cats.
Officials with DirecTV, the largest satellite provider, and DogTV couldn't immediately be reached for comment. No word on whether Dish Network (DISH) or Comcast (CMCSA) plan to follow suit with their own pet-friendly programming.

[BRIEFING.COM] The drive for five continued today and it was a success. For the fifth straight session, the S&P 500 ended lower. Like the previous four sessions, though, the losses were fairly modest in scope. The S&P 500 declined 0.4%, bringing its total loss for the five sessions to 22 points or 1.2%. All in all, that still qualifies as a pretty tame slide considering the S&P 500 had risen 150 points, or 9.1%, over the previous eight weeks.
