Gun sales see record Black Friday
Buyers swamped dealers, causing the FBI center that handles background checks to crash twice.
Was there something in this year's turkeys that made folks want to buy a gun?The day after Thanksgiving saw a record number of background-check requests from gun dealers. The calls came in so fast and furious, in fact, that the FBI centers that handle the requests crashed twice that day, USA Today reports.
Though accurate gun sales numbers are hard to come by, the overwhelming activity suggests that Black Friday was one for the record books for the firearm industry.
The FBI thought it was prepared for the day, particularly after hitting its previous one-day record on Black Friday 2011. That day, the bureau's call center took 129,166 requests.
But this year, the bureau took 154,873 calls, or about a 20% increase. You can't equate that to number of guns sold, however. The buyer may have decided against a purchase at the last minute. Or the buyer might have picked up more than one gun.
What was the reason for the new sales? Observers point to three areas. First, President Obama's re-election may be spurring fears of a new crackdown on guns. Obama hasn't exactly done much in this area -- in fact he signed a law in his first term allowing loaded guns in national parks -- but he did suggest in one of the presidential debates that he was in favor of reintroducing an assault weapons ban.
Another reason is a growing interest in guns on the part of women. The National Rifle Association says that women are its fastest-growing membership group. A final reason is that hunting and other shooting sports are gaining in popularity. MSN Money's Bruce Kennedy reported Wednesday that there was a 9% increase in hunters last year compared with 2006.

I like others have seen this country go down so far over the last 10 yrs , that I cant see America anymore,
The young act as though nothings wrong, They havent a clue how far we as a nation have fallen,
Ive lived through some bad times in our history, but nothing even came close to whats happening now,
No time in our past have the people been turned against each other as they are now, Always there was
tollorence of others, weather it be smokers, drinkers, rich, poor, etc. Now each group has nothing but hate
for the other. I to see a possible civil war comming, I hate it as it will finish off our nation as I knew it,
I have purchased more guns and ammo, because of this fear, It may not happen, but if it does I will be ready.
All of you who believe things wont get that bad, havent lived long enough to see it already is there/ The U N has asked our
president to over turn laws state passed, if you think they are not about to take over, again, you havent paid attention, or
lived long enough to see the changes. God bless our nation, she has some rough times ahead, I will be able to defend my
family from crooks, riots, our own government, or the UN,
I am in BLOG Heaven. For once, most of the posts here (I don't come here often) make sense. Thanks to ALL of you gun buying, and gun owning individuals here. Yes, the right to keep guns is one our WISE Forefathers knew we needed if we wanted to Remain FREE. You see, countries have come, and they have gone because of the fact that the citizens did not have the weapons their invaders had. Sad too, sometimes it was their own government who were the invaders----And That Is FACT.
We have a God Given RIGHT to protect ourselves and families. Since when does government or "law enforcement" have the right to deny us that??
If I could, I would buy everyone here a big fat drink of your choice.
Natrural Blonde 2012 and jockmama, your logic kills me. First let me say jockmama your implication of skin heads and rednecks offends me since these two names are as racist to white people as the "N" word is to black people. By the way, most gang members are not whites (at least in California) and the drive-by shootings they often do are not done with water pistols.
And you Blonde (real men used their fists)? Ok, but now people fight much differently and much more cowardly than the era you refer too.
Read most of the posts and listen with your ears, not you mouths.
And yes i place the blame directly on the socialist progressive " no God" direction of America. I pray for God to come back to America and bring us Salvation from our " me me me" society.
"Someone" believes you can buy a DOD defined assault weapon at the local sporting goods store. He claims to own weapons but has no clue that selectt-fire and automatic weapons are tightly regulated by the federal government.
Sadly, "Someone" is the type of person we read about in the paper because their firearm knowledge (or lack of) often leads to tragedy.
Yes, people are waking up all over our great country to the fact that the police by law do not have to protect us. It is up to us to protect our familes and our property. I'm sure no sane person wants to shoot another human being but like everyone is aware of there are just some people who think nothing of taking your property and commiting despectable acts of violence against men, women or children. So, sometimes we have no choice but to do what no man or women dreams of. There is nothing wrong with protecting your family from crazy insane people who would take your life then go eat dinner without a thought. I will never understand those among us who think that its wrong to own a gun. I guess those people think that the police will be at there doorstep to save them from the bad guys. I don't mind that they are not aware of what kind of world we live in and maybe someday we won't need guns to protect our love ones but right now that not the case so don't tell me not to own a gun because first of all its my right and second of all if and when that day comes that some nut case rapes your wife or daughter or God forbid kills a member of your family you will wish you had the means to protect them.
A few comments. The media seems to be only concerned when someone is killed with a firearm, but downplays all the people stabbed, beaten choked etc. to death. Where I live for over 40 years, murders are thankfully few and far between, but not one person has been killed with a firearm.
Another thing to keep in mind are that 1/3 of all persons killed by a firearm are criminals, or do I have to say alleged criminal. I also like the "GUN FREE ZONE" signs or the like. As we all know, only law-abiding gun owners will obey/honor such, the criminals certainly won't. And to stop violence and crime was as simple as putting up some signs, at the entrance/s to every town we can just erect signs that say "NO CRIMINALS ALLOWED", or "THIS IS A CRIME FREE TOWN", "NO CRIMINALS ALLOWED BEYOND THIS POINT" etc. etc.
It was simple. $10,000 says that Obama will not take away your guns over the next 4 years. If you Republicans are right, and he does, you get $10k. If you are wrong, you pay me $10k.
It was a simple wager, and not one of you Republicans had the balls to put your money where your mouth is.
I guess Republican convictions do not run very deep. Just like I thought... all talk, and too afraid to put their money on their beliefs. Apparently these Republicans don't even believe in what they preach. So now we see them for who they truly are, fear-mongering liars.

MARKET UPDATE
[BRIEFING.COM] The S&P 500 trades higher by 0.4% as today's session enters its final hour.
In the foreign exchange market, the Dollar Index is higher by 0.2% after early buying produced a test of the 84.20 area. However, trade slipped back below the 84.00 mark when St. Louis Fed President James Bullard suggested the Fed could take rates negative, but a lack of support prevents that from taking place at this time. The Index briefly slipped into negative territory, touching 83.65 ... More
