Gun sales see record Black Friday
Buyers swamped dealers, causing the FBI center that handles background checks to crash twice.
The day after Thanksgiving saw a record number of background-check requests from gun dealers. The calls came in so fast and furious, in fact, that the FBI centers that handle the requests crashed twice that day, USA Today reports.
Though accurate gun sales numbers are hard to come by, the overwhelming activity suggests that Black Friday was one for the record books for the firearm industry.
The FBI thought it was prepared for the day, particularly after hitting its previous one-day record on Black Friday 2011. That day, the bureau's call center took 129,166 requests.
But this year, the bureau took 154,873 calls, or about a 20% increase. You can't equate that to number of guns sold, however. The buyer may have decided against a purchase at the last minute. Or the buyer might have picked up more than one gun.
What was the reason for the new sales? Observers point to three areas. First, President Obama's re-election may be spurring fears of a new crackdown on guns. Obama hasn't exactly done much in this area -- in fact he signed a law in his first term allowing loaded guns in national parks -- but he did suggest in one of the presidential debates that he was in favor of reintroducing an assault weapons ban.
Another reason is a growing interest in guns on the part of women. The National Rifle Association says that women are its fastest-growing membership group. A final reason is that hunting and other shooting sports are gaining in popularity. MSN Money's Bruce Kennedy reported Wednesday that there was a 9% increase in hunters last year compared with 2006.

The elephants in the room, of course, are the demagoguing and fear mongering about Obama, his Presidency, liberalism/progressivism, and the changing "color" of America. We have millions of Americans espousing, considering, or not refuting Birtherism, an openly delusional attempt to delegitimize the Obama Presidency. We have an NRA whose spokepeson, Wayne LaPierre, expressed a far fetched and insidious delusion that Fast & Furious was some type of Obama conspiracy to discredit the 2nd Amendment. We have the chairperson of a major House Committee, Rep. Issa, publically repeating the delusion before he heads the House investigation into Fast & Furious (notice what little press was given to their findings... no "conspiracy"). It is no coincidence we see increased memberships in militias (mostly white), White Power groups, Neo-Nazi groups and the KKK. It is telling that a legitimate, democratic victory for Obama would spark secessionist petitions with the most signatures coming from States that were formerly part of the Confederacy, formerly home to Jim Crow.
As Walt Kelly said through Pogo, "We have met the enemy and he is us." The majority of American voters cast their vote for Obama. The majority of American voters cast their votes for Democratic Senators. And interestingly, it appears a slight majority of American voters cast their votes for Democratic Representatives but Republican redistricting after 2010 successfully denied Democrats parity if not a majority in the House. You do not see Democrats arming themselves and threatening secession over this. Food for thought.
Trained police miss their target 50% to 80% of the time.People have watched tooo many
John Wayne movies. In real life the wrong people get ahold of guns and usually innocent
people get killed.Don`t people remember the shooting in Tucson?
All the Right Wing Nuts STILL THINK that Obama is coming, to take all their guns away (and, to give their white wives to black men, etc. etc.). In addition, the Doomsday Preppers (who MAY - or may not - have different motivations) are taking seriously, the faulty Mayan Calendar, which many believe indicates the end of the world on 12/12/2012.
All a bunch of damn nonsense. Of course, this will run the prices through the roof, and ammo sales will also boom (no pun intended). Gun STORE owners will reap the benefits.....more power to them. Before your families are eating Cheerios for dinner (with NO milk), remember this: God gave each of us TWO HANDS. Once you've got about 10 guns, you cannot even carry them all, much less hold more than one in each hand. If you could, our soldiers would go into battle, with an M-16, a SAW, an M1A1, a .50 BMG sniper rifle, and a 279 Grenade launcher, with 100 pounds of ammo for each....but, of course, this is not practical.
THIS, from a lifelong gun owner, and Obama voter. Everybody take a breath. Calm down. Nothing's going to happen.
Firearms save lives, imagine an unarmed law enforcement, would look like old black and white keystone cops films. Illegal immigration is another cause for self defence. Illegal immigrants are criminals, criminals from another country. You can never ban guns. guns will still be made and used by someone. If you could ban guns what would you ban next? Knives, garden tools? rocks? anything can become a weapon. If we exclude rap ghetto mobster culture an Armed Society can be a Polite Society.
Just ask any woman who was raped if she wished she had a gun while she was being assaulted. 100% of rape victims support the 2nd Amendment. It's that simple.
Obama is not trying to take guns away. Just because he supports a ban on so called "Assault Weapons" and I own one, doesnt mean he does not support peoples rights to have other firearms.
Reading all the comments from parinod delusional and mentally ill people on here makes me think that taking away some guns might not be a bad idea!
Wow! Nothing rings in Christmas like gunfire. Maybe Santa armed the elves as well. I forgot,
castle laws will let you shoot them. Good will to all.
And I'm a PROUD CONTRIBUTOR to these stats. Now SUCK IT!

Equities climbed steadily since the opening bell as investors prepared for tomorrow's policy decision from the Federal Reserve. Although chatter in recent weeks has included speculation the Fed would look to taper its asset purchases, today's broad gains suggest investors expect mostly reassuring words from Chairman Bernanke at tomorrow's press conference.
