((c) Paul Hiffmeyer/Disneyland/AP Photo)Good news for insomniacs in Florida and California looking for some late-night fun next month: Walt Disney (DIS) says it will celebrate the start of summer by keeping three theme parks open for 24 hours straight on Friday, May 24.

“Guests can start Memorial Day Weekend with a 24-hour-marathon of memory-making,” said Walt Disney World President George Kalogridis, “as three parks stay open all day and all night to celebrate the bi-coastal kick-off of our Disney Parks Monstrous Summer,” a tie-in to the "Monsters, Inc." prequel opening in June.

According to Kalogridis, the Magic Kingdom Park in Florida, along with Disneyland Park and Disney Adventure Park in California, will stay open from 6 a.m. on May 24 to 6 a.m. May 25.

The parks will have late-night dance parties and feature costumed Disney characters in their pajamas.

The Disney fan site Inside the Magic says all three parks will have limited-edition specialty merchandise available throughout the 24 hour period, along with food and beverage offerings “plus other surprises throughout the entire day.”

Disney held a similar event last year to celebrate the 2012 leap year.

Sh**! Why are they doing this!! My husband and I won't be there until june! The leap year celebration last year was AWESOME. My husband and I had so much fun. i don't think there is any place safer in the world than disney world after midnight. We were at the gate at 6am for the opening and stayed on and off until 445 am. We even got t-shirts(literally RAN to the shop; like black friday at a walmart!). They say "I took the leap and didn't sleep." I want a t-shirt for this upcoming event. Wish they wouldn't do it again until the next leap year :(

I think it would be awesome. We were just there in December and had a great time.  One of my favorite things is to be in the park late, so to be there all night would be amazing! Just like senior night when they opened it for graduating seniors. Ah the good old days!

"Disney Adventure Park"?! WHAT?! It's called California Adventure. Seriously Bruce Kennedy, do some research. It's not hard.

Id rather be there after dark. Better mood and people usually clear out a bit. Id sleep in late, go to the park late, and spend the best hours having a great time.

Disneyland used to do that every for Senior Prom night. Or was it graduation? Can't remember now, been over 40 years ago. But they stopped doing it, I heard, because there began to be problems, kids getting into fights and smuggling in pot and such things. As usual...a few ruined a neat thing for many.

I love it!  I always liked staying at Disneyworld for the late nights and early mornings.  This would be fun!

That would be a straight up cool date for a nice young couple with the energy to wander the park all night.
Apr 26, 2013 10:53PM
omg!  Sounds like so much fun, were not going till September oh well, maybe next times.

when they did it for leap year it was disasterous. Severly overcroded and people were actually falling down drunk. it was awful--if they do it again hopefully they have it together this time and have some rules.

they did this Leap day too, It was really cool!!

Reminds me of the openings for Captain Eo and Star Tours when you lined up for 4+ hours, in the dark.  When you came out of the ride, the morning sun was up.  Nothing beats the teacups at 2 in the morning!
