America finds love at Wal-Mart

Low prices, high romance? A study of Craigslist missed connections finds the superstore is a romantic hotspot in 15 states.

For a lucky 15 states in this lovelorn union of ours, the best hope for bringing a little romance into their citizens' lives lies just beyond the customer service counter of the local Wal-Mart (WMT). CNNMoney notes that, according to a study of "missed connections" posts on Craigslist conducted by Psychology Today magazine, Wal-Mart was the most popular place to find love in the U.S. overall.

It's not that there's any romance to rolled-back prices or an aphrodisiac effect to the last-minute splurge items situated in front of the registers. It's just that, in certain states, Wal-Mart is the population's best chance at a universal, communal experience.

In Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Illinois and Washington, D.C., that experience is a commuter rail or subway ride. In California, it's the post-work stop at 24-Hour Fitness. In Wisconsin, it's any bar where the taps are flowing. In Hawaii, it's the beach. In Nevada, the casinos.

While Boston Magazine sees fit to opine about the study's statement of love on the rails, a big swath of the country snaking its way from from North Carolina to Idaho could fill a book of sonnets with their experiences between the resin patio chairs and the racks of Angry Birds T-shirts. While “missed connections” almost invariably consists of missed opportunities and sad endings, the fact that folks are looking even under some of the least ideal conditions should give the lonely cause for optimism.

After all, if Mr. or Ms. Right shares your affinity for wide aisles, hangar lighting and low-priced, low-durability goods, then that's a good base, right? Maybe they'll agree to meet with you over a cup of coffee at the in-store Dunkin' Donuts. Maybe that will lead to dinner at the in-store McDonald's or Subway. From there, it's just a quick jaunt to the jewelry section for an engagement ring and to the front desk to start a wedding registry.

It's a frightening first step toward a future that may only end when you and your beloved are sent to rest in matching Wal-Mart caskets, but it's still a better bet for young romantics that what lies ahead if they wait. Among Craigslist posters 40 and over, Psychology Today says the most missed connections came from encounters at strip clubs and adult bookstores. Say what you will about the folks pricing out snow tires in automotive, but at least they're not going to introduce themselves by shoving a wadded-up $1 into your waistband.

I smiled when I read the topic - because I was blessed five years ago while in the check out line at the local Wal-Mart.  This tall 6'2 handsome Caucasian gentleman was in front of me and he turned around and said "Gosh you are  beautiful." and asked me to a comedy show that weekend - New Year's eve.  People all around was looking as us like we were crazy, so not to embarrass him, we exchanged phone numbers - and I did call him and we called for two hours. At the time I was hesitant being in a mixed-race relationship being I am African American woman.  He asked me to marry him two months later. We married 1-1/2 years later.  He wined and dined me then and still does.  He still opens doors for me, helps me with my coat, pulls out a chair for me and brings me flowers.   The trip to Wal-Mart that day to purchase a land-line phone was well worth it.  My family and church members also love and adore him.

wallmart  destroying america one town at a time. millions of americans "living" on substandard wages so 5 people can be BILLIONARES.  and you think taxes are the problem?

I never got lucky at Wal-Mart.

But the employees are working and paying taxes instead of sitting around collecting welfare and foodstamps. So I wish them all the love they can get. The customers might as well enjoy each other too. Shopping should be fun!

Smart rich women shop at Wal Mart. Dumb, in debt, women shop at Macy's. I met my wife at the deli counter in Wal Mart. We have  nice Wal Mart's  near our summer home and winter home. It is what it is.

avatar husband and I met while working at Walmart in our college years.  Almost 17 years later, we are still happily married!  So yes, you can find anything at Walmart!

The Walmart in Litchfield,Illinois is the worst Walmart on the freakin' planet for customer service. If you don't believe it,try shopping there, I dare ya! They have a gold mine and they know it! Plan on standing in line forever unless you use the line to check yourself out. I refuse! Even checkers need jobs and Walmart being a multi-Billion $ company should buy some help. They are pathetic to say the least. SHOP at TARGET people if there is one close, cause Walmart SUCKS!

All you peoples are ****s. I know some of the employees at Walmart and they work hard just like you do. I hope that some of you ****s don't loose your jobs, because you will be working at Walmart to get a PAYCHECK. I like shopping at Walmart and i don't have to pay $20.00 more at the other store for the same pants. I bought a tv at Walmart and save $400.00 for the same tv at Best buy. It is all about saving money not keeping up with the JONES.

I met my boyfriend when we both worked there. Yeah some of the workers are crap but  most of them are just trying to pay their bills and do their job the best they can with what management gives them. The main problem at Walmart isn't the workers you see. Its the higher-ups that won't schedule enough workers during peak times, won't hire enough people to get the job done, and yet still expect everything to be done on time and perfectly. If you want to see change, complain to corporate, not your local store. Store managers actually have very little to do with how the schedules are done.

I think theres better quality women at Wal-mart compared to Kmart. Kmart has the "blue light special" or is that the "blue hair special" and lots of non-English speaking minorities (no offense intended) while Wally World has boatloads of white trash, misguided mental patients grazing the aisles in their pajamas at 3 o'clock in the afternoon, desperate welfare mothers, crack ho's and the ever loving fast food junkies.  Its a literal festival of the human condition.  I love Wal-Mart.....they got everything.

The worst store ever and its getting worse, yes they have good prices but they have too many losers working there who could careless about customer service, I was at my local walmart and alot of the items I was looking at did not even have a price and dont even bother asking the people working there they act like you are bothering them.

Do women come with instructions at wal-mart, it's been so long, i forgot which arm it was under.
Mar 5, 2013 1:22PM

WalMart is like Las Vegas.   We know what the outcome is going to be.....but we love to go anyway.
