I went to Camp Becket for several years in my youth. I am now a 43 year-old man and still recollect it as some of the greatest experiences of my life. It truly helped to form who I am today. The camp teaches teamwork, self-confidence, loyalty and plain ol' human kindness. The setting in the Berkshire Mountains is a true retreat from the the fast-paced, video screen focused lives that kids lead today. I couldn't be more thankful to my parents for the opportunity they provided me.

Last summer I  spent an entire week at the Future Investor Clubs of America Wall Street Summer Camp.  It was awesome, I am thinking about owning my business and being an investor and this camp gave me the training and more!  We visited the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, NASDAQ, American Museum of Finance, United Nations, Corporations and more.  We even went Times Square, South Seaport, NBC  Studios and other tourist attractions.  It was safe, professionally run and most of all it was the best camp I ever attended.

You forgot "Science Island Extreme", get trained by an Army Ranger, Marine Sniper, International Physicist, in the "Science of Survival".  We drop you off on an uninhabited island off the coast of Maine.  Can you get off?  scienceislandextreme.com

I went to Concordia Language Village back in the 60's. What a great experience.  Back then they had Spanish camp.

Concordia Language Villages is an awesome experience. There are 15 languages offered with 1,2, and 4 week summer programs, and it might be possible to earn high school language credit while having fun at camp.  The kids usually don't want to go home at the end of the session.

My daughter has earned 3 years of high school credit for French this way and never took it in school.  Also great for home-schoolers.

Check out the week long Texas Adventure Camp.  My introverted child attended last year & the first thing he said to us when we picked him up was if he could go back next summer.  http://www.texasadventurecamp.net

There is a unique new camp that is perfect for kids 12-17 years old, who want to make a difference in the world: Youth Empowered Action Camp (YEA Camp). For young people interested in the Environment, getting rid of racism, bullying, animal cruelty...it teaches them to be leaders in a friendly nurturing and fun environment.

I was a counselor at a Girl Scout Camp Tahigwa for over ten years, and I saw how much it built self-confidence in the girls. Girls are able to try things they may never get to anywhere else; canoeing, rappelling, caving, archery, tubing, building campfires.  They are able to leave home, where they may be bullied or dealing with a bad home situation and are able to be themselves and meet new people without any judgment.  Unfortunately, the Girl Scout Council of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois want to close ALL of their camps in eastern Iowa! They have not been offering programming at Tahigwa and then sight low participation/interest. Before the councils were consolidating over 800 girls were attending Camp Tahigwa, not it seems that it has been set up to fail.  This seems to be a trend in the US, which leads me to wonder if this is a push from the national organization.  Girl Scouts promote the ideals of courage, confidence, and character, all of which are built at camp.  I don't know how they can deny this opportunity to this generation and the generations of girls to come.

My daughter went to the Minneapolis Version of Girls Rock Camp. It's called Girl's Rock and Roll Retreat and it is DEFINITELY worth the money. She developed so much confidence and ability to work with a team in this camp. She came out feeling confident that she can perform in public--something she never really believed until now.

The girls come together, develop a band, many learn to play or pick up a micorphone for the first time (like my daughter) and then they write their own songs with full instrumental and perform at a local club. Here is a sample of what this camp can do.

Pretty amazing. For the Minneapolis version, you can learn more at

My child has been at Middlebury,Monterey Language Academy at the Swarthmore Campus out side Philly.  She studied Chinese.  Her teachers were excellent, the experience was excellent.  It is a very, very good program.  She has consistently come back to her Chinese high school class prepared.  The program reinforces what she has learned the year before and introduces the next level of learning.  She has met kids who she stays in touch with throughout the year.

If you want or need to stay closer to the East Coast,  here's the link

Camp Veritans in Northern New Jersey (Haledon) is a rustic Day Camp that has been a favorite of families for over 50 years.  Friendly nurturing atmosphere, rustic setting in busy Northern New Jersey, it is reasonably priced and provides bussing.  Outstanding staff that attends to each child's needs.  Supplementary programs along with swimming in a heated pool provide a safe environment for children from 5 years old into early teens.  Children who attend can't wait to return and advance to become part of the staff.  Several generations of families have attended and some have even met their future mates!
