I highly resent the comments by d4489 regarding drunken pilots (very rare) and psycho nut stewardesses. It is my pleasure and honor to serve all of my passengers. We put up with a lot of stuff from passengers and we try to accommodate all of you to the best of our ability and training.
Book and fly on the right day of the week is smart. We recently saved enough by flying two days early to afford the extra two days hotel. We spent those two days just looking around and enjoying life, so no extra expense, just more time away. Skyscanner is an excellent source for this.
Off peak? Hmmmmm….ok ….maybe. Depends on how much cold our heat you can stand. In SE Asia, you’ll roast most of the day, get rained on, die of humidity, and repeat.
Deal sights. Not so much a deal. However, I do like agoda for their points system.
Pack what you think you need, and then take out ½ of that. Travel with old underwear, socks and throw them away as you go. Leaves more room for the stuff you’ll buy.
I have even walked into the hotel lobby, got the best rate online while on their wireless, paid for it, and then walked to the counter to check in.
Periodically the wife and I go to Las Vegas, typically in the winter. We don't stay on the main part of the strip, where the hotels are the most expensive, but down a ways; we rent a car to save on taxi fare, and we travel around the area rather then just gambling in casinos. We buy a cheap Styrofoam cooler and use a little ice from the machine on the floor to keep things cool. We buy some breakfast stuff at the grocery stores rather than eating out for breakfast, and catch lunch out as well as dinner; but we take leftovers back to the cooler and eat them the next day. We use the Gas Buddy app to find inexpensive gas before we return the car.
We also save up any restaurant gift cards we receive through the year and take them with us so that we can dine out more easily, and find places with either free appetizers for happy hour, or cheap ones we can use for our main course. Sometimes, one of us buys a Caesar salad entrée and the other buys a regular entrée and we split them when the salads are a la carte.
We buy a couple of gallon jugs of drinking water, plus we generally take a few empty half-liter bottles to the airport with us; then, we refill the small bottles and when the jugs are empty, we use the machine at a grocery or convenience store to refill them. If the hotel doesn't have an in-room coffee maker, we pick up a cheap one at a drug store and leave it behind; pick up filters and fresh-grind coffee from the grocery, instead of buying expensive coffee all over town.
Then, there's those cheap liquor stores in Las Vegas; only a necessity on days you aren't in the casino gambling and getting a free drink for the price of a tip.
