A lot of these destinations might be cheap to stay at but when you tack on airfare to get there your cheap vacation isn't so cheap any more :(

A vacation to me is hopping on my motorcycle with camping gear and no plans of where I'm going.

Mexicans are now rallying in large numbers to protest the jailing of local drug lord. And this is where you want to vacation?

If I want to experience Mexico, I just have to go two streets down where I live.  same difference and saves on airfare.

Mexico City is also dangerous with a corrupt, underpaid police department.

Sorry the Bahamas is not cheap.  Writer is on crack.  Although I guess if you don't want to eat or drink for a week it is cheap...try $15+ for a burger or a drink..

I use to take two or three vacations a year to the beach or anywhere. But, now only one fits my budget. I know one couple who takes vacations a good bit and they're in debt over that. Most of the people I know and family included don't take one at all or maybe only one a year like me. As for Disney World. Forget it ! Who can afford to pay $97 for a one day pass and that's not counting food and lodging. A family of four pays easily $3000 or more to the Magic Kingdom for a three-four day pass. Just going to the beach can cost $1000 easily and that's cutting corners.

I have had wonderful vacations 200 miles away and not so great vacations 2000 miles away.

The only cheap vacations we ever took involved a tent and we have some fond memories of those days.

If I wanted to let readers know of cheap places to vacation in the USA, I would NOT base it on the price of 4-star hotels!  This is like the ABC article "Cheap Knockoffs for Skinny Wallets" where the cheapest outfit was $395!
Are online reporters recruited from among the children of the extremely wealthy?  Even the multimillionaires I know or who I've met traveling look for bargains: you're generally in your hotel room to sleep and eat breakfast.  Don't spend too much!

How does the dependency class take a vacation?  If you are not working in the first place and your meals, housing, entertainment, etc. are already being paid for by the people that are having to work to support you how do take a vacation?  Of course those that are paying for the dependency class lifestyle vacation opportunities are limited by the taxes they have to pay to keep your lifestyle continuing.  Now if we are not careful the current dependency class and the politicians that "represent" them will start demanding trips abroad....

I took a week's vacation in Memphis and had the one of the most enjoyable times in my adult life.  The Main Street trolly was great, with a stop at Beale Street.  A big part of the trip was taking a train from Washington, D. C., to Chicago, then to Memphis (Riding on the City of New Orleans).

Whatever you do DO NOT use Orbitz to book anything, you will end up paying more after they get done putting the screws to you and lying, want to cancel, forget about that! astronomical fees and charge will be nailed to you then, and you Will NOT be getting any help from so called cuatomer service!

Vegas is only cheap if you plan on not gambling and are not  planning on seeing shows, but being the entertainment capitol of the world, the shows are the best part to me.  They are pricey but worth it.  If you leave without seeing a cirque show you are definitely missing out.

Myrtle Beach can be inexpensive.  I recently booked 5 nights at Hotel Blue oceanfront  for $542 in June.  It says they are renovating for the 2014 season.  We usually stay at a different hotel, but I had to find something cheap because our heating bills have been killing us this winter.

What about North Dakota? According to earlier articles it is one of the best places to retire and where the happiest people are....  I can just see the advertising slogan, "Come to North Dakota for your snowcation!..Don't freeze your pecker off!".

there are a lot of things and places in the Ozarks and not out of most price ranges, although almost anything is out of range these days for the common people.

Thailand is cheap once you get here. Family of 4 making arrangements 6 months in advance, about 1100/person. And, one hell of a long flight. Food is good and cheap. Lunch for a family of 4 at a local shop, about 6 USD including the free local water, if you dare.
