A good, hard working student, can get a good education and be very successful, even if they go to a State school.
Its not always the high ranking private schools that produce the intellects, although the better ones do hire the best and brightest, and offer more courses (but that what you pay for).
You can compare a lazy kid from Harvard, to a hard working intellect from U Mass, and I'd hire the hard worker. Its not the Diploma, its who is holding it.

And we see the leadership of these Colleges go on to politically ruin America.  They don't teach a course of common sense.

Any school is only as good as the students who go there.

LEGAL immigrants and citizens should have preference for college GRANTS/TUITION above ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS and THEIR CHILDREN otherwise you are rewarding CRIMINALS.Some plan needs to be put in place for the children but with the state of our economy/country citizens and LEGALS NEED TO COME FIRST ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO PAYING for College

The most important thing in U.S. colleges seems to be sports. High schools are the same way. Read a paper and there will be an entire section dealing with sports and maybe a small article in the back that mentions a student doing well in class or being involved in helping the community.

America is still the best:)  Just give us a few more years of meddling through every child left behind and common core and we'll be as mindless as the rest of the world.

awww  man  I  thought  my   alma  mater  would  make  the  cut...  I  guess   kekoskee   tech is  just  not  a  prestigious  enough  school.

The ranking can not mean everything .

Ever check the cost of some of these colleges? Most Colleges? Then check the wages paid to the staff there. I would have taken ten years in military to pay off my loans. This includes all major colleges. Go to Junior College first and then do last years at Major.

Okay I get it we have lousy test scores for Math and Science at the elementary, middle school and high school;  but 7 out of 10 best universities in the world.   Must be all of the student body at these schools are from elsewhere because our students are so poorly prepared they can't get in.

What a crock...  every time I hear about how poorly US students do on standardized testing compared to the rest of the world I want to puke.  Anyone who reports that type of data know they are comparing apples to oranges.  The rest of the world does not educate every child, and those children in trade schools do not take the tests.

Come on.

All these smart people out there from these great schools and not one of them wants a job in Washington. Why ? The smart ones like to get things done while the total morons that got thru these very same schools and others as well are only concerned or covering their a$$ since it is the only type of work were being useless is a asset.

It included non-English speaking countries, but don't think the grad students at the top unis are English speakers. Fact is, US unis are tops but most of the top students are from overseas

I'm not sure how much i agree with this list. So many of the world's top engineers come from the IIT schools in india. They might not have the same budget as MIT but they've got the brain power to make up for it.

It's because of The Big Bang's a popular show!

Sorry but I think this ranking is just for English speaking universities and not for all universities in the world.

Surprised not to see ETH (Zurich) and the Indian Institute of Technology on the list.

At Cal Tech,a lot of kids are left behind! The "no child left behind" are mostly made up of teachers who are always lobbying for more money and greater retirement benefits. If most teachers worried about teaching as much as they do campaigning for more money, the graduation rates in Southern California schools would be higher. Currently .the graduation rate  is 56%,the highest in 30 years! There are kids who graduated from high school who are functionally illiterate. Someone taught them for 12 years and those teachers should be fired. But , unless you get caught killing someone while teaching in LA county, the likelihood  of you teaching until you retire (55 years old) are pretty good. And even if you were to be convicted of murder, you will only be fired after the jury comes back, so as to not deprive you of those extra years of employment while you were waiting for trail. More years, more retirement money!

University of Chicago?? Someone has good PR. Simply because they have the most degrees available doesn't qualify them as quality education. There are some gaping holes in their instruction.

How about ranking schools on the basis of the success rates of their students and alumni?  How about ranking schools on their ability to teach.  What has hiring a Nobel Laureate to bring in research dollars and run a research program and never see or speak to a student have to do with the quality of education provided?  It seems to me they are ranking research institutions not educational institutions and the quality of the second is not necessarily a product of the quality of the first.
