Is middle class the new poor? Or have our expectations simply grown unrealistic?

When I give 60% of my gross income in the form of taxes, tolls and fees to some government entity, it is not hard to see why the middle class is diminishing at such an alarming rate. As long as the government gives the extremely wealthy corporate socialism (Big Bailouts, Bogus government contracts, Tax incentives to companies that off shore work force) and give the extremely poor social welfare ( Obama phones , food stamps, government sponsored  housing the list go on and on……..)  The middle class will be fleeced to pay for these vote generating programs. I have a moderate income. I am not wealthy. All I want is to live the American Dream and provide for my family. Is that too much to ask?

In 1980 I was earning 10.55/hr. fresh out of high school. Now over 30 years later I am making 15/hr with a college degree. There is something very disturbing about that fact.

20 years ago I considered myself solid middle class based on income, time off, expenses, and discretionary money in my pocket. Then, I made roughly 70% of what I do now. Always had money in my pocket, covered the bills no problem, plenty of time to play with family and friends, gas was a buck a gallon, life was good. Today, well not so good. I make more money but work demands don't give me a lot of free time anymore, gas, food, rent, utilities, taxes, etc, I don't feel like middle class anymore. More like working poor. Burned out and fed up. What happened?

The democrats steal our money to benefit the poor and the republicans do it to benefit the wealthy. Middle class can't win either way.

A pathetic change for the greatest country in the world and it can all be blamed for allowing our politicians to agree to ship our good paying jobs overseas and give companies a great tax break on top of that plus let them keep their money off shore.. Add to that they allow illegals to infiltrate our borders and take away jobs from Americans. Every politician should be tossed out and new and meaningful requirements established and enforced....reduce their numbers and set term limits.

The poor are not the same as they were years ago. They now have a color TV, DVD player, AC, food stamps, rent paid, and medical care. Also note the vehicles now driven by the so called poor.

Well, if everyone is complaining, vote all the incumbents'  out of office- no matter what party they are in, find someone who will represent the middle class and NOT JUST TALK ABOUT IT WHEN THEY ARE RUNNING FOR OFFICE....that is what I am doing....keep doing the same thing and get the same results....sorry I am not crazy and you are not.....Let's take a stance. ARE YOU With ME????....

The definition of middle class is simple. You make too much to get a subsidy but not enough to buy it on your own.

The downfall of every great empire or country begins when less than 50% of the population has to support greater than 50% of their population. The US reached that plateau a few years ago. It's not going to get better folks. All the blah blah about voting out all the incumbents isn't going to work either. Won't happen! People go brain dead when they hit the polls (if they vote at all). Back in the 50's and 60's the US was in the top 2-3 countries in the world in standard of living, education, health etc. Now we're lucky if we're in the top 20 in ANY category. There was a time when, if a man was out of work, there was a stigma attached to it. Now people brag about not working, collecting all sorts of government handouts and working under the table. Why try to get a real job? The poor SOBs who work for a living (me included) are falling further and further behind. In 50 years or less people will be saying "remember when the US was the greatest country in the world?" The US will go the way of the Roman empire and the other empires of their time.

Our founding fathers are probably rolling over in their graves saddened that this great country they created has deteriorated in less than 300 years!

We will always have poor people. Many have no ambition. You have a child. You receive housing, food stamps, cash, electricity, cooling, heating, cell phone. Almost all the poor I know or meet smoke and drink. For the middle class taxes are a killer. We subsidize many things at a loss. Mass Transit is a big one. Money taken from fuel taxes to go to it. In my city we give to all these charities, build bike paths and trails. We do not have the money to repair our streets.  Because the tax payers give money to everybody. We spend more money nationally on education and get less for it.

Middle Class. I remember working two paper routes and collecting bottles on the beach to help our family get by. Putting a little change aside to buy a can of food for the poor people collection at school.  That Christmas the box of food was on our porch. We were the poor people was hard to believe. No Santa Claus was hard to believe. Devastating. I thought we were Middle Class. A few years ago after being retired awhile I remember talking to a welfare person in Oregon. I was saying trying hard will get you in the Middle Class. He said "WE don't want to be Middle Class. They take everything from them. We want to be where we are. The only other option was rich." Middle Class is as elusive as a carrot on a stick.

We live in a country where we make just enough to survive...and continue working.

It means being just slightly better off then the folks in the trailer parks and ghettos but not by much.

It is real easy to figure out if you are middle class or not. Just look at yourself vs the poor, if you for pay taxes, healthcare, cell phone, food, housing, electricity and for your kids needs you are middle class. If some uncle pays for it all you are poor.

the middle class is going broke because they are the ones who have to feed, clothe, educate and provide medical care for millions upon millions of illegal immigrants and the chronically lazy

I grew up poor and am still poor.  Yet they would put me in the middle of the middle.  Yeah right.  Professors making 6 figures mostly from government in one way or another don't have the right to tell us what is middle class.  They are just trying to revise things downward so we feel better in our poverty.

Middle class go to work everyday and report to someone call supervisor that can screw their lives up. They have attended public schools then accumulate several thousands of student loan debts which will need to be paid off for the rest of their miserable lives.

An economic system is graded purely on how well it benefits the entire society or sovereign country. any system, be it capitalism, communism, socialism or a hybrid mix. If it dosnt help the masses or create a so called middle class it will be deemed a failure. In short the middle class is basically the canary in a coal mine, if it goes your free market theories will get flushed down the stool with last nights supper.
