When being charitable is a bad idea

Costs, fees or other issues can mean that your deed doesn’t do as much good as it could. Here's how to ensure that your generosity is really helping.

I have been involved with a non profit since its inception. No one gets paid including the hard working humanitarian who spends countless hours running the charity. No overhead costs; we all work out of our homes on various tasks. Every time some scam is uncovered it hurts the credibility for us and others who do the right thing.

also do research on how much $ the executives make. the organizations have to post financials on their websites. I won't do functions or events with charities if the execs make a lot of money!

make sure the organization doesn't keep a percentage for administration and overhead (rent or lease of a facility). i fund my public charity administrative costs/overhead out of my

pocket and 100% of donations go to the donors designated events or programs.

When charity is a bad idea? Any time, any way, and where the government is any way involved.  No matter how it is done, they will bungle it, attack and/or ruin the giver, and steal most of what is given from the intended recipient.  And all charity is a bad idea in proportion to the size of government - government prostitutes everything, but nothing so much as charity.

Number 11 should be number 1, but otherwise, everything else sounds good.

brutisbear5...please stop jamming up these posting boards with your political rants.  There are political boards where you can rant to your heart's content.  This one is for charitable giving...not politics.

I am able to give  4 figure amounts annually to charity and my wife and I have investigated and selected a number of charities to which we donate.  We review them annually to confirm that they are still worthy of support by paying out 98% or more  of funds donated.  We have found that our local food bank is deserving of our support as is the CASA program for children.  We also give to the local Children's Christmas Appeal administered without charge by the United Way.

Our favorite international donation is Doctors Without Borders to whom we have donated long before they became well known when they received a Noble Prize for their work.  We personally have seen the work they do in Africa and the Far East and are aware that thousands are alive because of this groups efforts.

In addition,  we donate scholarship funds to our Alma Mater and support several private, non-profit projects in arts and education.

We make these donations annually and deduct them from our taxes.  This insures that funds that otherwise would have been taken by the IRS and ultimately disbursed, in many cases, to federal government programs to which we object, instead go directly to the charities of our choosing.  There is no federal bureaucracy costing 20 or 30%  to disburse the funds.  There is no disbursement of funds to government sponsored programs which are not of our choosing.

Our charitable contributions are going to our choice of efficient, honest and worthwhile charities.

Would you consider joining me by doing the same with your charitable donations? Bypass the Government collection agency (IRS) and the Government bureaucracy.  Donate directly to the charities carefully chosen by you and your donations will go directly to those you want to have it without interference from the U,.S. Government plus you get to deduct it from your Income Tax.

I do not give to anyone who solicits a donation. I rarely give to anyone. Instead of listening to all these african-american preachers lamenting about the "unfair" percentage of blacks in this country who are poor, we should all be listening to Reverend Manning. All the blacks should be listening to him, too. He put it very well: "everybody keeps saying we have to help the poor. We have to help the poor black people. White people are forced to help the poor. We have been helping the poor for years and guess what: THEY"RE STILL POOR!!! When are they going to help themselves?"

Try cooking dinner for a sick neighbor, better than giving money to wheels on wheels.

Keep your giving local folks and do

not support any charity that has employees that make boxcar money.  It is very simple.  Even if you want to send money to Sandy victims you are better off giving to local charities that send checks to their local counterparts in the affected area.

i do not donate, period, im not helpingsome organizations  ceo make 500 grand a year and only maybe 2 cent of my dollar go to help someone,  so i rather keep my money in my bank account, and spend it as i want, no one ever helped me wheni needed it 40 years ago, and i mean no one, but?i got a job  took a few chances, and  bought my ranch then another one, and now ihave  a couple of really nice large cattle ranches, and  i never asked  any organization for a dime, or help when i w as struggling, so forget it,  theyare all crooked as faras i can tell,

What do you care? You libitards do not give money to charity anyway and do not give me the exceptions. You tards always cite the exception and never the rule when promoting your extremist agenda.

It is the conservatives that give their money to charity as well as the government to care for you lazy moochers

Which is exactly why I do not like what the government does with our tax dollars.  Waste, waste, waste!

No worries, we will just tax and spend more.  Problem solved.  Freakin Idiots!!!!
