Obama comes out swinging in final debate

Comments submitted to MSN Money's Facebook page during the debate highlight sharp disagreements among Americans on key policy issues.

By Jonathan Berr Oct 23, 2012 10:03AM

President Barack Obama won the rhetorical contest Monday night against Republican challenger Mitt Romney.  Whether he will win a second term remains to be seen.

Several polls have shown the presidential election to be a statistical tie, which means that the winner may capture the most electoral votes and not the popular vote. The Democrats may retain control over the U.S. Senate. The U.S. House of Representatives probably will stay in the hands of Republicans.

Divided government leads to gridlock, which is the last thing that the U.S. needs as tries to claw its way out of the worst economic slowdown since the Great Depression. But if comments submitted to MSN Money's Facebook page during the debate are any indication, Americans are just as divided on issues as the candidates. Whoever wins the election will face a huge challenge bringing the nation together.  Below is a sample of our readers' opposing views, with some light edits for clarity:

Pro-Obama
Cathy B: Yes we are free. Free to get our salaries cut. Free to get laid off. Free to get unemployment checks. Free to get welfare. Free to lose our homes. Free to vote. Yes, America is prosperous through a rich man's eyes.

Karen T: Romney is the perfect plutocrat to rule the plutocracy we have for our new government.

Ann T: President Obama has forced Mr. Romney to learn current foreign politics. However, his international gaffes are insurmountable. Mr. Romney just doesn't possess the human qualities to bring our allies closer in order to reject American enemies.

Jane L: Obama's calm confidence and clear thinking beats the sputtering and posturing on the other side of the table hands down.

Pro-Romney:
Harriette M:  You are free to pull yourself up by the boot straps like my daughter did this past year and my husband did 10 years ago... I am not rich but I did save. I, too, was laid off in 2007 but was never bitter.

Matt B: Under Obama, we have higher unemployment than we have had under most presidents. Why is that good? You people are idiots. All Obama has done is hand our money to the laziest people this country has.

Marilyn S: China holds the keys to our treasury. We have to play by their rules! Thanks to uncontrolled spending on the part of the current administration.

Christopher K: Obama can talk all he wants, but ACTIONS speak louder than words, and he has not done ANYTHING about China in over three years!

The winner/loser spins on political debates is unfortunately a reflection of our society as a whole. It is more of a popularity contest and has little to do with capability or substance. It is like a musician winning a talent contest with litle talent but choosing a pop song most recognize, sure to gather votes when other contestants are far better on their instruments.

Can you imagine that anyone pays attention to hollywood ignoramus intellect on political issues. If many do, we are in a lot deeper trouble than we realize. Throw talk show celebs in to that category also.

So sad for Americans!!! The results of Obama's policies! Obama was on the attack at the debate last night, because he has "NO" answers for the economy! He has "NO" answer for why our Libyan ambassador did NOT have adequate protection!!!  Mitt Romney appeared....intelligent, informed, and presidential!! Go Mitt Romney, take us out of this mess!!

Obama looked annoyed and was acting small. As he said 4 years ago, "when you can't run on your record, you paint your opponent as someone to run away from". Well , everyone knows how bad Obama's record is so we know why isn't running on it.

You are not entitled to Welfare; you are not entitled to Medicaid. You are not entitled to free legal care or an education. Anything you get is a gift to you from those who pay your way through life and you should get down on your knees and be thankful. No one is entitled to something they did not earn. Put you hand to better use. Welfare is to be a hand up, not a hand out. It is not meant to be forever, it is not meant to be a way of life. It is not a gift for or to your next generation.

It doesn't make any different who our next president is. America has many very tough economic decisions to make. Raise taxes, reduce spending, stop subsidizing business, payoff debt, reduce the money supply, cut regulations, change the way we tax, etc.. We Americans are not going to like what we have to do to solve our economic problems. Furthermore, I don't see the leadership out there that can understand and solve these problems.

Wow we really are screw! We as Americans can't even agree on the issues at hand, how can we expect congress to agree on anything. Why don't we just keep the President we have and get rid of the entire congress Reps and Dems an get all new ones because who ever get elected will have there hands tied no matter what. How is any President suppose to get anything done when the two parties in congress have one agenda and that is to not support the other no matter it you kinda like or maybe even like what the other side is for. It's just wrong! As you can see I am not blaming one side or the other because it is all of them both parties, when you have both sides fighting like we do right now our President no matter how it is is a figurehead at best. As for me I just won't vote for anyone who states openly that he will cut SS for everyone under 55. I am 53 and my wife is 52 and we have both paid into SS since we were 16 yrs old, we will never be able to retire with our savings or our pensions without SS unlike a rich person who is out of touch with the common man! Oh yea I really don't like either one of them, man is that sad!

What I would do

No government sponsored aid to foreign countries.

No prohibiting individual aid to a foreign country unless the country is an enemy.

No tax on wages. No tax on investments. Tax on sales only.

No aid to anyone who is not a citizen.

No aid to anyone who is a drug addict.

To be a citizen in full standing you must be born of two citizens or be born of one citizen on United States land. Being born of one citizen in a foreign country or being born in this country of two non citizens would give you the right of dual citizenship on your 18th birthday; you would not be entitled to any benefits you had not earned.

No elected or hired employee of the government would be exempt from any law.

No federal government employee would be allowed to belong to a union.

Stop all visas for any reason from countries that are hostile to the United States, and stop visas to anyone who is a citizen of that country no matter where they are coming from.

All students on education visas would be required to check in and update or confirm their addresses twice a year.

All embassies in hostile countries to have marine security.

Suspend all immigration until we have our system in order. Allow states to activate the National Guard to patrol the borders.

I feel America is lost, a majority of us are more concerned with who will be on the next dancing with the stars than key issues affecting our country. Our politicans are all so corrupt that you can measure their level of corruption by their net worth. Congress has not approved a federal budget nor provided a cola increase to military vets or federal workers in the last four years, but they have approved themselves a minimum of 4% each of the last four years. The rules that apply to us no longer apply to them they dont even have to participate in Obama care, and when they get caught in some horrific scheme the claim executive privilege and dont have to answer for what they have done. Good thing they keep us to stupid to make a stand for ourselves. We need to wake up and get back on track go back to the constitution and start over. You can't even fart without being sued, and their is probably some group screaming farts destroy the ozona and we need to plug our butt's come on lets get over it. Liberal views just don't work use California as your model they had a whole state to do with as they pleased and they have about destroyed it... I am not saying conservative old school hard core right wing is the way but let common sense prevail.

Every time I make a little money the government steals 20-30% of it away from me to give away to other countries and lazy Americans and illegals. If my wife and I work longer or work extra the government hits us with the marriage penalty. If I do well in the market, the government hits me with the AMT. My income is nowhere near $250,000. The only hope for this Republic is true Conservatism or Libertarianism.

The debates as well as the presidential election are fixed. The American people at large are having two evils jammed down their throats, without even so much as a mention of either a third party or independent candidate that just may have positive input or call the hoaxes. This election (as well as many in recent history) is driven by and serves big money & the wealthy, which are the only entities to profit from either of these two pawns.

Class is a Myth

There is no such thing as low, middle or upper class. These are nothing but myths created by socialist to control the population by pitting one fake group of people against another. The governments love when you idiots spend your day hating each other instead of hating them. Rich is also a very subjective term created by the same bunch of socialist (many of whom fall into their own definition). Wake up and stop being used. We need to fight the government, not each other.

Yes Obama came across swinging anger, condescension, and facial sneers. Which is how he speaks to all of those under him. I know what I'm doing in November. God save America from another 4 years down this path.

The Truth about Percent versus Dollars

Everyone wants the rich ($250,000 is not rich) to pay a higher percentage of their income in taxes because they don’t think it’s enough. Well, how much is enough? If someone is paying hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars in taxes already, why should they pay more? So what if it’s only 10, 12, or even 5% of their income. Why should someone who works harder and sacrifices more, pay more? It’s wrong, it’s unfair. Those paying millions are supporting those paying only a few hundred dollars. If that’s 20% of your income, maybe you just need to work harder? The rest of us are tired of supporting you. Would you rather have 10% of $100,000 or 5% of $250,000?

It doesn’t matter who wins when it comes to the economy: the government does not create jobs other than the ones in the offices that it runs. Actually the government needs to cut jobs on its own staff because is a dream to work for more money, less responsibilities and tons of benefits – is time to become efficient; any other plant or enterprise would have been long time ago bankrupt if would have been ran by those guys – but they can go for more loans over and over again and keep the appearance that everything is in control (by who or whom). How can you expend and hire people if the products you are creating have no more market to be consumed? Of course the “logic” is to give more money to the business by taking them from the people that generate it – this for sure is going to create more jobs.  Obama less military actions, Romney more and the debt will soar higher like in the Bush era. Both of them are bad but you need to choose the lesser bad so according to somebody I knew if the kids do not listen to your advice then help them to make the mistake. Please vote Romney!

The only green in Obamas energy policy is our money which he uses as a reelection slush fund and to pay off campaign $ bundlers.

Obama has been nowhere close to perfect, but he did have a cosmic mess to start with, left over from that bumbling idiot Bush and his America-wrecking cronies. Another term to do better is deserved, especially considering his opposition.

The worst thing I can see from Obama's presidency is that America has started down a very perilous road in electing extremists as president. Obama is an extreme social liberal who has concentrated his time as president trying to get better rights and privileges for the poor and needy in this society, which for the most part concerns minorities. However, our politics and society constantly going from pillar to post and back again with a total-opposite new president is not what is needed and best for societal stability. Moderation at all times is what is needed, plus the public demand to constantly maintain it, but humans historically cannot seem to learn that fundamental truth so must always bear the consequences of their erratic and extreme behavior that never learns the best way to live without the constant upheaval that pillar to post behavior always and perpetually causes.

Romney is the polar opposite of Obama, so the moronic and destructive pillar to post game goes on and on. What a pathetic species we are, despite our "great brains" which would easily allow us to thrive if used in the best ways for species survival.

47% of Americans consider themselves victims. Yes, THE TRUTH HURTS. Try more like 50%, and it comes from the jackass on top, who is still blaming the previous administration for all his problems. Americans have become a mentally sick group of people. The democratic socialist mentality of false victimization is what is destroying this country.
