Some places are clearly worse than others for retirement. These states are among the worst, as measured by crime, life expectancy and the number of retirees living in poverty.

This is one of the stupidest articles on retirement I've ever read.  Statewide crime statistics are averages, so where you live within a state is what counts.  Just because a lot of retired people are below the poverty line or have an lower than average life expectancy doesn't mean that YOU will fall into those categories just because you live there or move there.

Boy what BS, I guess I should be lucky to be retired in New York, Cause here the crime is so low, the taxes ditto that, gas, beer, cigarettes and food they practically give them away. The roads are like ice, no empty building where once their was a business, never saw a toll road, no illegals, don't have to re-learn Espanoli everytime I pick up the phone or read a sign, not a cop on every block(no not looking for criminals no handing out $150 speeding tickets), no 125K per year lazy worthless teachers, no firehouse bigger than the White House. And lastly a two party system, either you vote for the Dumbocrats or you stay home, or I guess you could vote for them may times.

Someone needs to learn how to do simple comparisons from STATS 101 AGAIN! Comparing your ten "worst" to your ten "best," reveals that other than median income relative to size there is little or no difference in the states OTHER than your 10 best are all either in the extreme NE or frickin Hawaiiand all of your worst are in the South/SouthWest. Bad show MSN, biased at its best, prejudiced and stereotypical at worst.

This is the dumbest list I've ever seen. One - crime rate for most of the states is skewed by them having just one or two crime ridden large metro areas. If I retired in Louisiana I probably wouldn't be moving to NO. Two - life expectancy is skewed because older folks have lived there all their lives. Three - the poverty rate is also skewed because most of those folks have lived in that state all their lives. If I lived in California most of my life (which I have) lived healthfully and made a few bucks, belive me I can do well in Arkansa or Kentucky for a long time.

Forgot?..Seems like the younger generation want to start at the top, rather than the bottom?
Like my one Daughter!...Could have stayed in School and started at the top!

Every state on this list also consequently has the lowest cost of living (in certain cities within each state) so of course the crime rates will be high.  Any time you throw poverty into the mix, there will be crimes being committed.

Unless you are a rich "government worker" don't go to Maryland.  Democrat Gov. Martin O'Malley is killing Maryland with increased or newly invented taxes, 24 in the past two years.  Over half of the population of Baltimore has fled the city because of taxes, crime, fear and very poor public schools.  Maryland also ranks 47th in regard to being "business friendly."  Those Marylanders who can sell their houses are leaving, (approx. 150,000 so far) - going to states like Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia and South Carolina.  The counties surrounding D.C. are filled with rich government Liberals and Northern "come heres".  They have turned Maryland into a Blue State ... things here, just keep getting worse for the middle class, business owners and the elderly.

Well my old Kentucky Home made the list.  I don't know why with the excellent politicos we have running this state.  We have a few full blown idiots some over the hill altimer idiots a few queer idiots and the list of idiots goes on.  Kentucky ranks first in every poll where poverty, poor health, education, and low income and high taxes are involved.  Good grief if it wasn't for the Wildcats basketball team I'd be gone.

What a bunch of biased crap. All states listed are in the southern US. Texas for example has no income tax, good economy with low cost of living and cost of housing. The cost of living and state income taxes in the northeast, midwest and far west will eat up most retirees financially.

so....basically you are saying....the entire south

10 worst states to retire to?  Uhhhhh, you might want to include 401/ 457/ IRA dividen taxes, the "COST OF LIVING" and maybe "STATE INCOME, PROPERTY and SALES TAXES" before you start declaring a state the "Worst" state to retire to.
