What does it matter? Vast majority of retired people stay exactly where they are. A more instructive article would tell how one could make the most of where they already live.

Head straight on out to Chicago...and if you hurry, you will be there just in time for their proposed 33% property tax increase.   Just think of all the corruption you can enjoy living there.

Strange article. Normally, people don't retire to these states, they retire from these states. Who wants to retire in a place that it's cold 9 months of the years. And as far as West Virginia, the only people that retire in that state are the ones that can't afford a U-Haul to get out.

The best state for retirement is where you will be happy and enjoy your time, most likely near where your family/kids are. People that retire to locations based primarily on tax rates are sad individuals who value material things over human connections. A great recipe to grow old and die alone, bitter and angry at the world.

What about the weather in these states?

Cold, cold and cold for much of the year.

If you retire up north, plan on going south for the winter, adding to costs.

As for Washington State, the Puget Sound area (Seattle, Tacoma) is very difficult to get around in by car.  Traffic is a nightmare.

I can hardly wait to retire in Iowa.
You're either freezing or bored,  or both.
They can put on my epitaph,  "Stupid for reading MSN".

The best places to retire are those where you can freeze your **** off six months out of every year.  Duh!  Everyone knows that.

edly727, you are obviously very jealous of our country. I'm sorry you have so much anger in you. That must suck.

It's not important what the state's median income or wages are for retirement purposes. Retiring means NOT working. Of course the economy and housing costs along with incidence of crime is affected by these factors. I retired to San Jose, not California or any other city by that name but the Province of San Jose in Costa Rica. Any city named San Jose has too high a cost of living and crime in abundance. But the Province of San Jose is a different story.  But you must like a low cost of living and ideal climate to enjoy life here, along with great friends from varied backgrounds. Thanks Costa Rica for my second childhood. Don't EVER grow up it's a trap!

Wyoming is a good choice. Scenic yet baron; much like edly727, where he could climb a mountain have a landslide and no one would care about him any more.

I loved Minnesota when I was young employed and enjoyed Winter sports. Now I am 74 hate it when it's cold and retired to Arizona, one of the states you say is one of the worst. I know several native Arizonans and none are ready to move to any of these wet/cold states. Who wrote this junk?
