I live in Oregon, the tax rate is ridiculous and the people at our State Dept. of Revenue make the IRS look like Santa Claus. My Dad passed away on April 15th, filed for an extension, but owed $79.00 to the state. Had proof that I was caring for him & had no income during that time. As soon as I returned to work they garnished my (part-time) check. No inheritance here so they are going after a 62 yr. old lady whose crime was caring for a dying parent. Our state employees got paid for time the government was shut down and got unemployment benefits too. Weasels!!!

They left out the People's Republic of Illinois. A state with such rampant debt & corrupt officials they've been proclaimed by Moody's to be the state in the worst fiscal standing (YES... even WORSE than California!) People and companies are fleeing ahead of the huge tax increases they'll need to implement just to balance their short term debt. Long term solutions are not on the horizon. Property taxes are soaring statewide, causing thousands on fixed incomes to lose their homes. One of Chicago's dirty little secrets are the 12,000 vacant homes within city limits, most lost by seniors unable to make their huge tax payments. Yeah, sounds like a wonderful place to retire to, doesn't it?

California has nice weather but 47 million residents that we know of living here. The prices and cost of living in this state is ridiculous at best! High taxes, gasoline, food, rent are just a few things out of control. The fact is, if your income is below  $ 3,000 a month then you have to scrimp just to get from pay check to pay check. The real winners here are the poor and un documented Illegals, they get most of it free, Food stamps, medical, low housing costs. they Go to an ER at night for regular doctor care free of charge.   If you have money, welcome to California

Why does MSN list new Mexico when in other articles they keep trying to sell Albequerque as one of the top spots to retire to???  Don't they read their own articles?

Where is WV in this stupid list?  Most people here can never afford to retire, and have to work until they drop dead at their place of employment.  I work in a labor intensive warehouse for a Forbes 500 multi billion dollar company, and you should see how many people over the age of 65 working here, hooked on prescription pain meds to get through the day.
The only ones here retiring at 65 are surburbanites who moved out from the DC metro area.  Some of them even have to keep working, depending on how poorly they managed their money.  The rest, however, are making 8-11 dollars an hour and have a monthly rent of around $750 to $1000 for a hole in the wall 2br 1ba apartment.  A thousand bucks a month may seem like chump change if you live in NY or CA, but do the math off of what they make an hour, most aren't making 40 hours a week either.  Doesn't even factor in the cost of food, or GAS, which runs 20-30 cents more per gallon than just across the line in VA...

NewsGeek  Learn to speak for yourself ONLY. I retired at 58 my wife at 48. We own our home and raised two sons. Both are doing very well. Obama has not a thing to do with your short comings. You need to man up and take responsibility for your own faults.

Well, I'll say this, my Republican run state of NC, even though the Republicans say they are against new taxes, really do find ways to increase the amount of taxes they take in from us poor broke citizens so they have it easy and can leech off of us.  They done it again by requiring Amazon and other online stores to tax us on purchases.

Looks, like the Democratic states are the worst and they call themselves trying to help the lower income people. What a crock! More lies.....time to clean out congress in 2014 and elect a different type president in 2016.

These are among the most livable and enjoyable states, but they are more expensive. You get what you pay for. Not all retirees are looking for the cheapest place to live.

You forgot Nevada. Their taxes constantly go up. Sales tax, vehicle fees, rv's and just a cheap small trailer is outrageous. Nevada is taking away people's rights. If you die in Nevada the government will illegally enter the home and take what they want of value and the family cannot get the household back.  The government lies and denies they are stealing.  Even the law enforcement is in on it.   Now the government want to take away our water rights.  If you have a well they want to restrict your usage.  This is unconstitutional.  Yet they let Las Vegas use all the water they want.  I do not recommend moving to Nevada.   I am selling and moving to another state.  Nevada is like a third world country.
