ok msn louisiana is also on 10 worst states for retirees,this is why i cant take you seriously with these articles,have a comprehensive look at the states for taxes and healthcare and quality of life.

last i knew there was at least 7 states without income tax.... what happened to them on your list?

If you lived in NJ, you cannot afford to live there on a fixed retiree income, property taxes kill you.

Just go there and visit and enjoy buying tax free clothing and groceries if you are camping.

Whoa!!!! South Carolina is tax-friendly for retirees?  WHAT A JOKE.!!!!  EVERYTHING IS TAXED HERE.  EVEN EXCLUDING THE SALES TAX,  (which is substantial) YOU CAN HARDLY GO THROUGH A WEEK WITHOUT PAYING SOME FORM OF TAX

yeah, this list is pretty much a joke.....must be a slow day in the office when you try and pull off a re-write of "best places to retire" and attempt to plug a list of "fails" for retiring in.....

It practically kills me when Pennsylvania always come up in these lists because of the "No Income Tax on Pensions" b.s. This is true, SO THE STATE MAKES IT UP WITH THE DAMNED PROPERTY TAX! and you do NOT have to live anywhere NEAR a big city to get wallet raped . This is a closed shop state, and the fat, bloated, all powerful government unions rule, AND EVERYBODY ELSE PAYS!

I lives in Hespermia, CA and CA. won't let you register your car unless you have insurance on it.
I bought a cherry '76 Olds Cutlass with the 455 cid V-8 and guess what:?  Even though it is 37 years old = antique and you can't get parts......CA wants it 100% smog certified including a SINGLE EXHAUST with a catalytic converter.  I'm predicting a mass exit when those CLOWNS at Calif. Air Resources Board (CARB) enact MORE B.S. rules, regulations and etc. etc.
Think about it: How OFTEN can one afford to drive a 455 V-8 at today's gas prices.  IT is a show car or a once a month driver.  CARB wants it to be sparkling emission free just like todays junk cars (Mazzzzzda, Fiat, Daewoo,, Isuzu, ) These are throw away cars and once the sensors start going bad it's going to be $1,000's to 'fix' em
I'll take a big-block Chevelle any day over these NEW improved safe and sound non-polluting piecees of crap.  CA wake up....a 40 year old classic isn't a GROSS polluter.

Sheer idiocy!  If the tax rates are so low, how do they pay for quality education?  Which naturally leads to the next question, how do they pay for effective law enforcement?  (Where did you think those undereducated kids were going to go when they could be tried as adults?) Since the elderly are vulnerable to disease, how do they pay for proper sanitation?  What about libraries, parks, museums, & other sources of free entertainment, so important to those on a fixed income?
