Here's who made Consumer Reports' naughty and nice list

Which store penalizes you for too many returns? And which one will let you retroactively apply coupons?

Money Talks News on MSN MoneyConsumer Reports is giving Santa a little help this year.

Gift © Brian Hagiwara, Brand X, CorbisThe magazine compiled a list of companies it says were naughty or nice based on the companies' policies and practices.

The list comes with a couple of caveats.

"Although we cite companies by name, other businesses may engage in similar practices -- for better or worse," Consumer Reports says.


"And praise or blame for a specific policy doesn’t mean we give a thumbs down or thumbs up ... for everything else that company does or the way it treats customers," the publication continued.

Here are some of the companies deserving a fat lump of coal, according to Consumer Reports:

  • Amazon, for raising its free shipping minimum purchase to $35 from the long-standing $25.
  • Best Buy, which maintains a database of return and exchange patterns and can block you from returning merchandise for 90 days if it doesn't like your record.
  • Fry's Electronics, which doesn’t allow refunds on TVs 24 inches or larger.
  • United Airlines, which, unlike many airlines, doesn't allow early boarding for families with babies or young children.

And here are some of the good little corporate boys and girls:

  • Bed Bath & Beyond, which goes above and beyond on price adjustments. Bring a receipt and a valid coupon and you can have the discount retroactively applied.
  • Citibank, for offering late payment forgiveness and no late fees on its Citi Simplicity card. (Paying late can still ding your credit, though.)
  • Sony, for routinely providing helpful and quick customer service over social media.
  • T-Mobile, for not trying to profit from your old phone. It separates on the bill the cost for service and for the phone you got at a steep discount, and unlike other carriers, stops charging for the latter when you've paid in full.

Maybe it's because I work in customer service, but sometimes I get sick of the expectations we have as consumers. You give Best Buy a "naughty" because they don't want to rent brand new electronics free to every customer. It's one thing to buy an item and realize it wasn't what you were looking for, but how are they wrong to say if someone does that regularly, they can't keep doing it. Why don't I just go in to best buy and get the newest tablet, and then just return it right before I can't, and switch it for another, and another, and another. 

I just so tired of entitled consumerism.

I have to admit I am surprised that Amazon is on the naughty list ... free shipping for a $35 minimum order is very reasonable, beyond that I believe there service and follow-up is fantastic.

But honestly, I don't blame Best Buy for their return policy.  Some people abuse policies and need to be limited.  I don't like Best Buy for other reasons....

what the heck is going on at CR????  Citi Bank and Walmart on a nice list??? Amazon on the Naughty list...thats crazy talk man. 

Citi Bank and Walmart on on the permanent hall of fame naughty list, nothing they do can ever repair damage from the past or right their many wrongs

the Wynn Hotel for their

 BOGUS free two night stay in LAS VEGAS !!

I agree with amazon, this is just a ploy to make the fancy amazon 80.00 a year thing look better.

Consumer Reports list?  Isnt that the same magazine that rates those Toyota and Honda vehicles so highly?  But they have the most recalls for the last five years in a row? 

Somethings rotten in CR land.  Can you say payolla?

Oh Yes!...HAD a list to purchased on Amazon and nearly fell off my perch when I saw the new fee structure...Amazon WAS dear to my heart but I have cancelled my order and will shop locally in a real store..Amazon; you just cut your own throat!
