A projected 34.1 million Americans are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home over the holiday weekend. That's 4.2% more than traveled during the same period last year. A significant economic change AAA noted is the strengthening of home prices.

"AAA is forecasting a lift in Labor Day travel this year due to the increasingly positive economic outlook and optimism in the housing market," AAA President and CEO Robert L. Darbelnet said. "For many Americans, their home is also their biggest asset. As home prices improve in many parts of the country more families are feeling comfortable about traveling this Labor Day holiday."

Of those who are traveling, the vast majority will be going by car (85%), according to the AAA survey released on Tuesday. The most common scenario for travel over the weekend will be those who will try to take full advantage of the long weekend, leaving on Friday and returning on Monday.

The average round-trip for those who are hitting the road this year will be 594 miles. Those folks expect to spend, on average, $804, according to AAA. That projected spending is up from $749 last year.

What do people expected to be doing? More than half (57%) plan to go out to eat while just under half plan to visit with friends and family (46%) and go shopping (43%).
