For sale: 500 vintage Chevrolet models, barely driven
For decades, a Chevrolet dealer in Nebraska kept cars that didn't sell, and now he's decided to auction them off next month.
It's a car collector's fantasy come true. Hundreds of vintage Chevrolet cars and trucks -- many classic models that have barely been driven -- will go on the auction block to sell to the highest bidder.
"To find this many new, old vehicles is unheard of," auctioneer Yvette VanDerBrink told The Associated Press. "It's like a white buffalo."
For years rumors circulated about an eccentric old dealer in the Midwest who held onto his unsold stock. But it wasn't until more than 17 years after the dealership closed that owner Ray Lambrecht, 95, decided to finally sell his now classic stable of cars, proving the rumors were true.
Next month, bidders from all 50 states and at least 12 countries will descend on tiny Pierce, Neb., for a two-day auction that will feature the kinds of cherry rides their grandfather's might have driven.
The most valuable, like a rare Chevy Cameo pickup, might easily fetch six figures, according to experts.
"This kind of stuff is absolutely the rarest of the rare," Mark Gessler, president of the Historic Vehicle Association in Gaithersburg, Md., told The AP. "You can see plenty of cars that have been restored. We want to ensure that we're celebrating the original craftsmanship, the original technique. It's a touchstone of our past."
