5 frugal tips she can do without
Subjecting your friends to advertising? No thanks.
It's undeniable that large amounts of money can be saved by using cloth rather than disposable diapers. But Madison's husband nixed the idea for their two kids in diapers. He's the one who does the laundry in their house.
In a post at My Dollar Plan, Madison lists that and other frugalities she won't embrace and explains why she prefers the more expensive alternatives. They include brown-bagging lunch and that "annoying" Brring.
It's almost heresy in the personal-finance blogosphere
to eat lunch out. In fact, Madison is now reconsidering her position
after reader Terry said the restaurant lunches he and his wife have
given up are paying for his wife's 2008 Honda. If you eat out because
you want to get away from the workplace for an hour, reader Matt added, you can eat your brown-bag lunch in a park.
Brring is a phone service that earns you points by playing an ad for the person who calls you before connecting the phone call. Madison says that while she's frugal, "I've decided not to subject people calling our house to advertisers."
Among other frugalities Madison avoids is "excessive couponing." She admittedly took it to extremes and says, "I made us eat really weird food!" We think this practice could prove worthwhile if she modified her approach.
