We’ve observed Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but the special shopping days aren’t over yet. Are you ready for Free Shipping Day?

Free Shipping Day, which will be celebrated Dec. 17 this year, is a one-day shopping event in which participating merchants offer free shipping with guaranteed delivery by Dec. 24. Last year, the first year for the promotion, 250 retailers participated. More than 490 have signed up so far for this year’s event.

Participants include large companies such as Macy’s, Sears and Borders as well as smaller companies, in categories ranging from sporting goods to apparel to automotive to baby items. Exact deals will be unveiled at midnight on Thursday, Dec. 17.

The event is organized by Freeshipping.org, a Web site that is always worth checking when you’re ordering merchandise online. The site includes coupon codes for free shipping and other shipping deals from a wide variety of merchants. The company just launched a Canadian version, too, Freeshipping.ca.

This year especially, more merchants are offering free shipping throughout the holiday season to get you to spend your hard-earned money with them. You can also find plenty of online coupons, so don’t order anything without searching for coupons as well as free shipping deals. If you’re looking for something specific, sign up for e-mail newsletters from your favorite merchants, because many send out deals and coupons nearly every day.

The convenience of online shopping means more and more of us are buying holiday gifts online, as well as making routine purchases for ourselves of everything from books to computers.

Web measurement company comScore reported that online retail sales are up 4% this year, for the period from Nov. 1 through Dec. 4, according to an article in Internet Retailer.

Free shipping was a significant factor, comScore reported. A total of 44% of purchases last week included a shipping incentive, up from 40% during the same week last year. The average value of orders that include free shipping is 15% higher than for orders without shipping deals, the firm noted.
