Frugal eating tips from the Simpsons

Homer never met bacon he didn't like

By Karen Datko Sep 11, 2009 4:22PM

How do we know there's such a thing as too much frugality in the kitchen? Because Marge Simpson once said to her daughter: "Lisa, I made you some homemade Pepsi for the dance; it's a little thick but the price is right."

That's from the excellent post "Cutting calories and saving d'oh: 25 lessons 'The Simpsons' taught me about cheap, healthy eating" at Cheap Healthy Good. The author, Kris, is the most entertaining food-and-frugality blogger out there, but we think she's outdone herself with this one.

There is no way we can do her post justice in this small space (other than to encourage you to read it). We will tell you that Kris employs the show's commentary on our super-consumptive lifestyles to slyly suggest some course corrections. All in good humor, of course.

For instance, here's another lesson learned from "The Simpsons": Lots of food companies are interested in your money, not your health.

[Marge has decided to go into the pretzel business.]
Marge: What's my territory?
Frank Ormand: Your territory? Well, let me put it this way: Wherever a young mother is ignorant as to what to feed her baby, you'll be there. Wherever nacho penetration is less than total, you'll be there! Wherever a Bavarian is not quite full, you'll be there!
Marge: Don't forget fat people! They can't stop eating!
Homer: (passing by) Hey! Pretzels!

Also, you may want to reduce your consumption of meat.

Apu: Let's see ... Farmer Billy's smoke-fed bacon, Farmer Billy's bacon-fed bacon, Farmer Billy's travel bacon ... Mr. Simpson, if you really want to kill yourself, I also sell handguns!

Sometimes, Homer is setting a good example. As Kris says, to enjoy food properly, you should use all of your senses.

Homer: I smell cake! Cake that says (sniff sniff) "Farewell" and (sniff sniff) "Best Wishes"!
Nelson: Your old man has an awesome nose.
Bart: Oh, that's nothing. He can hear pudding.
