Boo! Dress as scary food and get a deal
Jamie Oliver and Chipotle are offering $2 'boo-rito' specials for diners who come as a 'horrifying processed food product' on Halloween.
Are you looking for a really scary costume for Halloween?
TV chef and healthy-eating advocate Jamie Oliver suggests you dress up as a "horrifying processed food product." He's teaming up with Chipotle Mexican Grill to provide a reward: $2 burrito, bowl, salad or order of tacos if you come into Chipotle after 6 p.m. Oct 31 in your scariest processed-food costume.
Proceeds, up to $1 million, will go to Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution, which was the subject of a TV series earlier this year documenting Oliver's efforts to push West Virginia school cafeterias to serve healthier, less processed food -- and persuade the children and their parents to eat better.
"We have a longstanding tradition of rewarding our customers who dress up as their favorite Chipotle menu item with a free burrito on Halloween," Steve Ells, the chairman and co-CEO of Chipotle, said in a news release. "It's always been a fun promotion, but we wanted to do more with it this year and use the opportunity to reinforce with our customers our belief in the importance of eating wholesome, unprocessed foods."
You can see a photo here of Ells dressed as "dippin' sauce" and Oliver dressed as -- well, we're not sure what he's dressed as, but we sure wouldn't eat it.
Chipotle has a few costume suggestions:
Stumped for ideas? Dress as a hot dog. Grab some foam and emulate a certain infamous snack cake. Come as a tub of margarine. Strap some yellow pool noodles to your back and "ta-da," you're an order of fries. Whatever you decide, just be creative.
Chipotle is also holding an online photo contest for the best "horrifying processed food product" costume, with a grand prize of $2,500.
In other Halloween deals:
- T.G.I. Friday's is offering a free appetizer (fried mozzarella, pot stickers or crispy green beans) to customers in costume Oct. 29-30. On Oct. 31, kids in costume eat free when accompanied by someone who purchases an adult entrée.
- IHOP is giving kids 12 and under a free Scary Face pancake Oct. 29, whether they wear a costume or not.
- Kids in costume eat free at participating Chili's restaurants Oct. 30-31, one free kid's meal with each adult entrée purchase.
