American Airlines warns about phony emails

The fake emails are scammers' attempts to steal people's personal information. Here's what to look out for.

By MSN Money Partner Jan 6, 2012 6:07PM

This post comes from Jeanine Skowronski at partner site MainStreet.

MainStreet on MSN MoneyAmerican Airlines is warning consumers to be on the lookout for phishing scams after being forwarded fraudulent emails by other patrons.

The airline has posted on its website several examples of fake emails that have been sent out under its name. The scams involved include receipts for an airline ticket purchased under the recipient's name, an invitation to redeem bonus miles through the AAdvantage program, and a request for consumers to download and print out tickets.

There is also a copy of a phony fax on the website that advertises airfare deals to "Cancun, Cabo and Jamaica." Post continues below.

All variations of the scam urge consumers to click on a link or call a phone number in an attempt to gain access to their personal information, and American Airlines says some of these emails may have attachments that contain potential viruses.

"American Airlines will never request its customers to perform security-related changes or use email as a communication method to collect usernames, passwords, email addresses, Social Security numbers or other personal information," the company explains in its security statement.

It advises consumers not to click on links, open any attachments, call any phone numbers listed or follow any instructions in the email. Instead, they should forward a copy of the correspondence, including the header, to webmaster@aa.com so the airline can investigate further.

ALWAYS with their hands out. ALWAYS looking for the government to FIX a problem that THEY THEMSELVES HAVE CREATED.(Or, too stupid to recognize a problem before THEY mess up!) And, I'll carry on the chant,

SAVE ME BARACK!!!!!!!

I'm in the UK and just received one of these e-mails. You would think they would send me an e-mail pretending to be from British Airways and charge in Sterling rather than USD so not very believable.

The destination - San Antonio - would be very nice as It's freezing here at the moment. I will continue to dream.

Another Phishing Scam- and What is Ever done about them? SO, How many innocent victims gave out their personal information to them this time??? When is this EVER going to STOP???

It Will STOP When we Severely Proscecute these Criminals, that is when!!!

Are these Scammers Prosecuted?? Does our Government Ever INVESTIGATE it enough to Track Down the Criminals and Proscecute them??

Why do we consumers have to ALWAYS be on guard for something they Know exists, and can harm our credit and cause all sorts of troubles for us....and do NOTHING about??

If I had not read this article herre about American Airlines, then I, like millions out there now, would have no clue this was a nasty trick to get my information and use it against me!

Why do we always have to be on guard here in the U.S.??

Just like 9/11 the government Knew about the threats of it happening before it even happened,  yet they did NOTHING to prevent it!!

There were 'rumors' circulating and talk of the threats, yet NOTHING WAS DONE TO PREVENT IT.

Only AFTER ther annialation of the buildings and innocent people did they shut the airlines down. A little too late...don't ya think?!

Look out! Be on Guard! BeWare! Be Frickin' Paranoid about Everrything! Don't Trust Anyone or Anything! Isn't this what they are teaching us??!

Pathetic! PROSCECUTE these CRIMINALS who steal our identities and wreak havoc in our lives!! Send out a BOLD MESSAGE that Criminals Will PAY for their Crimes!!

Why do we always have to be a victim to crime, when there are ways to STOP it from ever happening?

Most hackers and hi-jackers of OUR personal computers are from other countires. Proscecute these criminals! Make Stiffer Laws to Penalize these criminals who do these illegal activities. Alleviate other criminals from doing the same--Knowing they will get away with it!!

I was a victim and Microsoft Tracked down two hackers: one fom Beijing, China, and the other from the Netherlands. Was ANYTHING EVER DONE TO THEM??? I have to wonder, because Microsoft wouldn't tell me-though they had the TECHNOLOGY to Track these Criminals!!!

Please Make Stiffer Penalities! Work with these countries officials to make computer hacking and phishing illegal and with jail time.

PLEASE Take These Criminals to Jail!!! Please.

Yes, these criminals need to be prosecuted.

Obama's appointment of a director for the Consumer Protection Agency was a great one. One of the roles of government is to protect our rights and the "pursuit of happiness" by keeping criminals and corporations from swindling citizens.

What makes a great country is a great government- a government not just for the rich and powerful.

Many citizens are being duped by the likes of the greedy billionaire Koch Brothers and the Bank of America who want to dismantle consumer protections.
