10 tax goofs many of us keep making

Year after year, the IRS sees Americans committing the same sorts of mistakes on their returns. Many of these errors are easy to avoid; some are more complicated.

Regardless of the incessant political campaign rhetoric taxes will never be truly simplified.  Every attempt to do so results in more complications.  The reason?  The practice of tax lobbying, tax advising (i.e, finding loopholes)  tax law and the resolution of tax disputes is a multi-million dollar industry.  The last thing the legal profession would want is simplification.  And who makes the law?  Lawyers.  The simplification any law, let alone tax law, is the last thing the legal profession wants.  Confusion is their bread and butter.

TURBO TAX WARNING! How ironic that your tax pages are sponsored by Turbotax. I found a HUGE tax mistake that TurboTax made on our taxes so I now have to write a very large check to the IRS as a result. After over 90 minutes online with a TT rep that got me nowhere, TT now claims that they don't contact customers, that if I want to speak with a supervisor I need to call back: gee, I don't think I should have to chase them down for them to correct a mistake that they made, that they now know about. They have my phone number and my email, but have heard nothing from them. So much for their Guaranteed Accuracy, so much for standing behind their product.

We should all be filing an honest return and stop cheating our neighbors. I think a flat tax would be best.

Sorry, never made any of these mistakes. Guess the MSN journalists need to be audited because apparently they are making these mistakes.

What in the world is the matter with you MSN?  These message boards are filled day in and day out with spam.  I report every one I see.  It does no good.  You mean to tell me you are so technically incompetent that you can't filter out user names that are in the form of a spam website name?  It's really getting old.  Figure it out already !!  Geez.   Angry

I have no accountant's experience except for the first two classes in undergraduate school and I could have wrote this article.  What a waste of time.
