You may be right - to each its own. But I still maintain that  the acquisition of cyber gadgetry is silly. I am more impressed with things that  remain  valuable - alithograph by McKnight,  a vintage oriental rug,  Martin guitar or a Steinway piano.  You have to hold your own during the "herstyria" of texting, sexting and twittering garbage. Since I own three splendid film cameras, I am in no mood to shell out money for the digitized  nonsense.

Same old junk nothing new about any of this stuff. you can get way cheaper stuff then these name brands. especially the video games. same game different pics. The only ones who need gifts on christmas is the kids, adults could go buy what they actually want for themselves.

Even I am surprised at how little I care about any of these "hot items."

very proud of their product.  I wouldn't be so proud parting with $200.

much better choices for $50-60.

The anti technology crowd is funny. I would call them old but I am in my 40's so it must be more than that. I love technology. Do we need it? No but we don't NEED the old technology either. We can live without electricity and gas. People have done it before. But it's easy to take a stand against something that doesn't inconvenience you but to go all the way so you aren't a hypocrite is tough. Kinda like the tree huggers that are ok with driving a Prius when if they they were really concerned would ride a bike. But hey, they only care as long as the inconvenience isn't too great.

This "need vs want" aregument is rediculous. All of you that made it have plenty of things in your life that you don't NEED. Everything from a bed to your car to a house with even an inch more room than you need to move around. Get of your high horse before someone knocks you off it. Your hypocrisy is unbecoming. Hypocrites and pedophiles are at about the same level in my book, a book I read on my ipad, while listening to music on my iphone 5 which I use to take photos of my fossil fuel burning car which I use to take me to places I don't NEED to go but do it because I CAN.

Gimmmick tech is designed to sell anything to anybody who will buy in .  I have hundreds of good books as well as gardening, classical music, self education projects and theres not enough time to do what I would like to do  so I do not need games, intrusions, networks, social clubs etc.

I find the higher the technology the worse it is for our young people to have.  Right now they can't write a complete sentence nor know how to spell.  Their face to face contact is minimal and our society is suffering due to lack of ability to communicate in person with anyone.  If all the money that is spent on these unnecessary devices and given to our local food banks so our poor children right in our home towns had food to eat we would be a better community.

Every so often, everyone needs to catch up with technology, at least to a point of minimal understanding and capability.  My parents bought a brand new car this fall, their first in about 10 years.  Mom has requested that "I" read the owner's manual, and then sit down with she and Dad to explain how all of the gadgetry works, {the system links, the MP3 port, the OnStar, the Sirius radio, the push button emergency brake, etc...}.  If we hide our heads in the sand, when we finally decide to come back up out of it, we sadly realize that the entire landscape has changed,  :-(
The E-readers they mention in this article are excellent gifts, advancements in technology, and, yes they are excellent ecological choices.  One can't count the E-readers in a tree, but one can count the trees in an E-reader.  Back to Mom and Dad, who are avid readers; I got the each a basic Kindle E-reader, cause they both need books in larger print, and what they want to read isn't always available in larger print, but the E-readers fix that problem with the adjustable fonts.  Additionally, they are easy to carry around, operate, and in most cases, lighter than than the Hardbound NY-Times bestsellers they prefer to read.  And I get to bring them up to speed on technology.   It's OK to avoid the hassles of modern technology.... if you don't mind sowing with a horse and plow. :-)

Funny. I have yet to see a Nexus 7 w/16gb priced at $200, but I have seen it everywhere for $199.

I think we place too many emphasis on gifts during the holidays! I say buy a digital camera take your holiday pics upload them from your pc and do a slide show and just.....enjoy family time bonding! It has been my experience since the world of techno-gadgets has arrived there has been a break down in family time! no more dinners together at the dinner table everyone grabs a plate and heads for the bedroom to either watch TV or get on their iPads or laptops. But to each his own..so whatever makes you happy go with it!

"Whatever tablets consumers go for, Qualcomm () is going to get richer -- since it sells the chips that power most of them."

This is false.

Samsung uses their Exynos CPUs.
Apple uses their A6X CPUs.
Google Nexus 7 uses the Tegra 3.
Google Nexus 10 uses the Cortex A15 .
MS is using the Tegra3 CPUs in the current Surface.
ASUS is also using Tegra3 CPUs.
Motorolla Xoom uses Tegra2.
Kindles use Cortex.

I believe that list covers well over "most" of the tablet market space.
